Au Caquelon

Fabulous Alsace restaurant in the heart of Strasbourg. Food is great the atmosphere is fabulous and the service is mediocre (very French I might add). Staff manage to speak a bit of English and the prices are very reasonable. The portions are huge and I would recommend you only go for one course if you are not a big eater as you may struggle to finish it. Food from Alsace is pretty rich but simple and tastes fabulous. They also made a couple of the dishes on the menu vegetarian on request and that was really nice of them to do so.

I would happily come back here again and again.

What a disappointment.
I booked a table through La Fourchette for a Sunday evening (first Sunday in September so it's still high tourist season). I didn't need the reservation as the restaurant was pretty empty at 1930 when we arrived. Since their specialty is rosti both my wife and I had that. Hers was Roestisch with tomatoes, bacon, and cheese. I had trois frommage with reblochon, munster, and chèvre (goat's cheese). Both lacked any seasoning and needed large amounts of salt and pepper. After proper seasoning, the Roestisch was good; my trois frommage was bland. The rosti was cooked only in an oven since only the top was crisp/browned. The interior of both rostis, while warm and cooked, was not one bit crispy and were rather limp and plain. I've had rosti in Austria and Switzerland. I cook my own rosti at home. Mine is so, so much better than here. Bummer, this was our last and worst meal in three nights in Strasbourg.
Don't waste your time/money here. There's hundreds of better restaurants in Strasbourg. Service wasn't particularly inviting and we were initially given a poor table (remember, we had a reservation) right next to the entrance to the kitchen so the wait staff was back and forth, bumping the table, all the time).

Au Caquelon offers great food typical of the Alsace region. My boyfriend looked this one up particularly for me, the vegetarian, as he knew I would have trouble finding cuisine that I could eat from the region, seeing as it is heavily meat-based. We each ordered a menu, including a salad (mine was warm goat cheese, the best goat cheese I've had!) and a vegetarian roesti. The roesti was huge and we both were unable to finish ours! Mine came with various vegetables in a tomato cream sauce--it basically looked like spaghetti bolognese just with veggies and potatoes instead ;) We ordered a pinot noir to accompany the food and I was quickly reminded how much I love this wine, it was great.

Although the restaurant was sparse when we visited (a Friday evening), I'm sure it's packed during the winter as the food is quite heavy and filling and more suited for the colder months.

The total came to about 30 eur pp, which was very fair given the quality of food and drinks that we ordered.

Ambiance in the restaurant also makes you feel as you are in the home of a French (Alsace) grandmother--decorated in a lot of red and white country decor found in the region.

Location is also very central and close to the river. Check it out if you'd like to try some traditional Alsace cuisine!
