My husband and friends and I had brunch here last Saturday. I found the prices and menu options overall very good (but agree a bit much for the sides) so I don't see all the fuss on that matter. Service wasn't amazing but also want terrible so maybe we were just lucky?! It was quite busy though.
I got the kale and sweetcorn fritters, my husband the pancakes and my friends the buttermilk fried chicken burgers. My fritters were lovely: a bit sweet but also savoury with the kale, and the perfect texture. But there were only two small pucks on the plate. I had asked for scrambled rather than poached egg but the egg still came poached. There was a tiny greens and julienned carrot portion as well as a dab of labneh. But the pink kraut I asked for on the side was tiny for £3! So as you can see in my photo below very little for the amount paid. Yummy but I was still hungry after! Meanwhile my husband's pancakes portion was delicious and huge. Three enormous stacks drizzled with caramel and plenty of banana slices and blueberries. I had a few bites and had total food envy. My friends said their buttermilk chicken was fine but nothing to rave about.
I was hungry when I left so had a second brunch at Story Coffee down the road (quinoa pancakes yum!)Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lyndon P.London, Vereinigtes Königreich11342422. Feb. 2016
Brilliant place serving brilliant food.
I took my girlfriend here for her birthday and to sample the "bottomless prosecco" deal. Needless to say, bottomless definitely was bottomless! How much we drank was unknown and to be honest you never really manage to keep track. This, couple with what I can only describe as the BEST burger I have ever had (posh chicken burger) and the most friendliest and preppy service there is made for a fantastic day and night out.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Lilli D.Saint Peters, Australien691418710. I've been hearing everyone rave about this place for ages and I finally got to go. We went with a group of 6 and expected to have to wait to get in getting there at 11am on a Saturday but we got straight in!
the place is really big, from the front it looks tiny but it goes back.
The staff were really nice and helpful. I had the pancakes and a coffee and it came to £11 which I thought was pretty good. Some of the best pancakes I have had around Clapham as well so very pleased and can't wait to go back. :)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 10. März 2016
OMG this place was so good!!! We were in London for a few days visiting from the States and this was th best meal we had here. We came on Weds night and got lucky to get the ribs for the ribs night special. SO GOOD and tender and just fell off the bone. We also ordered drinks which was a good deal that night as well.
The best part was they gave us a complimentary champagne bottle for registering online.
Def a must come if you want good food!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sian G.London, Vereinigtes Königreich9681726. Juli 2015
Went to Ben's Canteen yesterday for the Saturday Bottomless Bubbly Brunch. For £25 you get a main dish (from a set menu of about 8 things; it's no longer brunch food) and unlimited prosecco. It currently runs from 4pm-7pm but will change to 4pm-6pm from August.
I had the steak sandwich and chips which was delicious and a good size. My boyfriend had pulled pork nachos, which were tasty but not huge. They're really good at topping up your glass - I think there might have only been once in the whole 3 hours when we had an empty glass at any point. You do walk away quite tipsy!
We then had the DIY doughnuts, which were tasty and fun. The staff were lovely. Very friendly, polite, helpful etc. Would definitely recommend Ben's and will go back to try some of their other deals.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lu T.Denver, Vereinigte Staaten12340428. Nov. 2016
We came in on a Friday night and it was surprisingly empty and they were able to seat 6 people immediately.
We ordered wine and the burger deal (where you get a started and a burger for a fixed price). I ordered the prawns which was pretty good. The cheeseburger was ok but didn't come with any lettuce or tomato so it was pretty plain. The main course also took over 45 minutes to arrive.
The service was nice but rather slow to get drink orders out quickly and keep our bottle of water filled.
On top of that, it was super pricey for OK food.
Everything about it this experience was OK with nothing memorable.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Audrey M.Boston, Vereinigte Staaten68612926. Nov. 2017
This place is fabulous! We came here with a group 14 and they accommodated perfectly! We had a big long table in the back. Our waitress was attentive and so kind! The owner was so friendly and awesome!
Most of us got burgers which did not disappoint!
Those who got salads said they were delicious!
Very fun place I would suggest in LondonHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Diane N.Denver, Vereinigte Staaten9641319. Feb. 2017
£30 for entree + unlimited prosecco
Thus my tip is to order a higher price entree!
I got the brunch burger and it was insanely good. Thinking about it now and hope all burgers to come will taste like that.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Milly Y.London, Vereinigtes Königreich88721821. Aug. 2015
When we arrived, there was limited seating available as they had a private function in the back, but we managed to get the last public table. The décor is very shabby-chic, with worn tables, plenty of exposed wood and an AMAZING winged heart mirror feature piece on the wall. The cocktail menu was really interesting, and in the end I went for The Geisha, a mixture of Boodles Gin, Elderflower Liqueur, rose syrup and sparkling wine, decorated with rose petals. It's definitely the perfect summer cocktail - refreshing and light, and not too boozy-tasting.
The Ben's Canteen menu keeps it simple, with just three great choices on the burger section of the menu. I chose the Posh Fried Chicken Burger - which I can honestly say is one of the best chicken burgers I've ever had, if not THE best! The soft chicken breast is fried in a spiced buttermilk coating, served in a bun with bacon and red cabbage slaw. Fries come with the burger and you can choose between normal and sweet potato - obviously, I went for the latter as sweet potato fries are one of my biggest food-based weaknesses. These ones didn't disappoint, fried to perfection and I loved that they leave the skin on for a bit of added texture to a veg that's normally pretty soft.
After wolfing down our burgers and drooling over the lovely cake display, we decided to grab a dessert to share and chose one of their raspberry macaroons. They were definitely big enough to share between two, and really tasty - plenty of coconut and a rich raspberry filling. Overall, our bill came to around £60 for the two of us (two burger meals, a dessert to share, two cocktails, a glass of wine and a beer), which is very reasonable for eating out in London, especially with cocktails.
I really enjoyed my visit to Ben's Canteen - the food is fantastic, the chilled vibe is great for a casual date/catch up with friends, and the ambience is welcoming and lovely.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Duncan W.Hongkong613061892. Aug. 2012
Ben's Canteen is a great neighbourhood restaurant. Until 4pm a brunch menu is served which in addition to the usual egg based options also offers more substantial fare. The burger here is particularly good with a layer of brined beef covered in cheese luring lying on top of the burger itself. I have not had another burger like it in London. The coffee is equally good - so it should be as I believe that 'Brewed Boy' (something of a London coffee celebrity) set up the coffee bar!
In the evening a second menu swings into action with lots of comfort food favourites to choose from. This food is never going to be hitting gastronomic pinnacles but it sure is tasty and can be washed down with Meantime sourced beer. Consequently, Ben's Canteen will no doubt prove to be an easy midweek fix for some time to come.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
