Hans Im Glück

The quest for the best burger restaurant in Germany continues. My next stop was Hans Im Glück.

First off the interior and design of the restaurant is really nice but at times the music is too loud and makes it hard to understand what the people you are eating with are saying.

The burger selection is a good one with many different choices that will leave any burger lover wishing they could try at least 5 of them. I focused on the special Christmas burgers because I can obviously only get them during Christmas. My choice was the Elsässer. It was more of a sweet and salty burger which I am starting to love more and more. It had Brie cheese, with a berry sauce. This was very good and a 5 star recommendation. The fries were ok but being able to have as much mayo, ketchup, barbecue, or honey mustard is great. My friend had the sweet potato fries and I would say pay the extra euro for these because they are much better.

Since coming to Germany I have tried many burgers. Some sweet and some savory. But there are two burgers that have been standouts. One is the Geissbock from Hans Im Glück. This burger has just about everything I love in a burger, sweet with the fig sauce, savory with the bacon and just to crank it up a notch the goat cheese or ziegen kase it's called here.

The Wild West Burger is what I think of a typical American Burger. The taste was good with the barbecue sauce and onions but it isn't very special to me. Probably a 4 star burger.

Also they had a great deal which was a Burger, Fries, Beer, and Coffee for 13€ which I believe is really good here in Köln. My favorite Burger place in Köln.

Perhaps I caught Hans on a bad night, because he seemed pretty unglücklich to me.

I've heard great things about the place, and was looking forward to expanding my burger repertoire beyond Fette Kuh. When I arrived to meet our group, I was a bit stunned at how LOUD the place was, but, that's a given at most restaurants these days. The interior was a bit upscale/trendy, IMO, for a real burger joint, but I wasn't there for the ambiance... I was there for the beef.

I bucked the typical burger options and - full of hope - went for a breadless burger, the Hoffnungsträger, which was advertised as a "juicy beef patty with argula, parmesan, and parmesan dressing". I split an order of fries with a friend.

The plate presentation was good, and my mouth was watering... until I had the first bite of the burger. I hadn't been asked how I would like it cooked, but I hoped for something closer to medium well, so that I would be able to taste the real flavor of the meat. Instead, the patty was overcooked and completely dry. Fortunately, the burger patty was absolutely drenched in both the parmesan dressing and a mysterious orange-colored sauce that wasn't listed in the description, adding a bit of moisture. It was edible, but not enjoyable.

I continued to hold out hope for the thick cut fries - which were obviously not homemade, but looked tasty nonetheless. The fries were cooked very well, crispy on the outside, nice and soft on the inside, but were over salted, so we didn't even finish the small order.

I applaud HiG for their range of very inventive burger options - from beef to chicken to vegetarian... I just wished the food had tasted better.

I've been here twice, and it's a great, chic place for a good burger. The ambiance and decor are very modern; be prepared for loud music. Prices are reasonable.
One gripe is that the customer service can be terribly slow, depending on the night. It took us forever to put in our order. The couple next to us had been waiting for their check for so long and had asked their waiter several times for it; they finally just got fed up and bounced without paying.
Aside from the slow service, it's a fun place for a date night or night with friends.

I've been to a couple of Hans im Glück restaurants around Germany (Munich, Stuttgart) and didn't like them that much. I always found the meat to dry.
However, the burgers in Cologne are REALLY GOOD.
The meat is tasty, juicy. The herbs, bread etc is really good. They have a good variety of tastes so that everyone can find something they like (western style, italian style, greek ...)
The service is really fast and very polite here.

You CANNOT pay by credit card - which is a fail!

Definately one of the TOP 5 burger restaurants in Cologne.

this place has by far the best hamburgers I have ever eaten.
A great atmosphere with kind waitresses. The hamgurgers are just awsome!
It is a very crowded place, so mind your timing for arrival and expected eating interval.

great decor, unbelievably tasty burgers, chicken sandwiches and sweet potato fries.

Well, where can i start.
The place from the outside doesn't look appealing at all.
Then when you get in it's more like a sushi bar o some tree-hugging eco-restaurant. Somehow too fancy for a Burger-place.
American Food? Yeeeeah NO!
A burger in a Bagel bread and Gorgonzola Cheese? Like i said, too fancy.
The atmosphere is just average, no music, nothing, just a lot of people trying to talk, it's really loud.
The service is good, the waitress that got our party of 12 or something like that was really nice, took the order for beverages really quick and delivered as quick as she took the order.
After i saw the place i expected the food to be waaaay more expensive, i mean 12 euros for a burger and fries is not cheap, but i could've been worse.
I had a regular burger with cheese and bacon, i asked for the meat to be Medium and it was awesome. The bun was a little fancy but good, the beef was great, maybe a bit of salt wouldn't hurt. The salad in the burger was good & tasted really fresh. The bun had some kind of sauce, i can't tell what kind, i was to busy enjoying my meet & bacon. The fries, well not bad but, i've seen better.
Overall it's a nice place, i'll probably go back. The only problem is that the place and the food just aren't on the same channel.
If it depended only on the food i'd give 4/5 stars, but the place just didn't get me. i'm between 2/3 for the overall experience.
Service is good don't get me wrong, but when i want to go eat a burger, i don't expect fancy floors or some designer style furniture. Nor bagel breads and gorgonzola cheese.
Whats next, Zucchini Bread and Brie Cheese? Come On! I know Europeans eat funny, but this is American Food!
To be honest such a fancy place and they don't accept Credit Cards or offer free WIFi?
That just made me decide.

Read about this place in the NY Times and so thought I would try it out while in Cologne. The ambience is very modern and hip. Lots of young people eating here. The menu is cool, it looks like a storybook and is very cute. Drinks were good, had a great mojito! The burgers themselves were lacking. They don't ask you how you would like your burger cooked, so everyone gets the same thin patty cooked to brown in the middle. The toppings on the burgers are good though. I had the goat cheese burger and my husband had the BBQ sauce one. The fries were also pretty delicious. Service was really slow. Overall, a decent meal but nothing I would need to go back to again.

This place had amazing burgers and fries. They also had an american menu. They are vegetarian friendly. The sever that me and my girlfriend had spoke american very well. I recommend this place to every one. The wait wasn't long for our food but then again we came right before the lunch rush.

The burgers were amazing! Fresh, and meat cooked to order. Fries were nice big chunks and fresh. Nice atmosphere. Definitely recommended!
