Kottbusser Tor and the surrounding area near the station has a negative reputation among some Berliners. I understand their concerns and support any efforts to lower criminal activity. However, if you're an American that lives in an urban setting back home, it's nothing you haven't seen before. Take the same precautions that you would in any large city, and you should be fine. I suggest buying a cheap money pouch to wear underneath clothing. Hell, I'd advise wearing one anywhere.

This section of Kreuzberg presents an air of political activism based on the graffiti murals throughout the 'hood.' Lots of bars and west Asian eateries can be found here. If you're the adventurous type, you should definitely check it out. It's one of the few places left in Berlin that has not fallen prey to pretentiousness.

Maybe I blocked it out before i even arrived in Berlin, but I have never felt uncomfortable, worried, or scared while at Kottbusser Tor. I suppose this is because most of my time spent here is transferring inside between the U1 and the U8 and not dealing with loitering folk outside. Yeah the junkies hang out outside and if you walk under the tracks you might get shit on by pigeons, but it's not altogether terrible. And if you are outside, keep your wits about you and you'll be OK.

For me, actually, the worst part is the mob of people who clog the escalators instead of adhering to, what I am relatively certain, is the universal stand on the right, pass on the left, rule of escalator usage. But if you don't have a quick transfer to make, looking at the faces of all the people going the opposite way is always an interesting way to pass the time. Also, reading the graffiti on the U8 walls can be entertaining.

There's also the issue of the escalators themselves being totally on the wrong sides, but I won't even attempt to understand what the person who designed it that way was thinking.

The symbol of the "socially problematic" area of Kreuzberg.

For some, Kottbusser Tor (or Kotti as the Berliner likes to call it), a problematic area with drug dealers, violent kids and dirty streets.

For me it is a location to meet people with interesting backgrounds like teenagers with big dreams, artists, internet startupers...and enjoy the best international food in Berlin.

Wow, how things have changed. I used to live in Berlin in 2007, and at that time Kottbusser Tor was a vibrant multi-cultural space with lots of shops and not as much crime. Today things are quite different, while its still full of foreigners, the foreigners that hang out on the streets of Kottbusser Tor today are almost all young foreign men who are dealing in drugs. You can barely walk around there on a Friday or Saturday night without being offered Cocaine or Heroin multiple times by numerous foreign men... and the thievery that goes on today is unbelievable. There are gangs of roving men who prey on anyone with a backpack or purse. Its sad, but one second I noticed three or four foreign men standing around me, and the next I realized my wallet was missing. Why the police don't do anything (or maybe they do), I have no idea. It seems when the police arrive, these men scatter and disappear into the night. Maybe the German police need to use undercover agents if they are not able to catch these thieves, because they are rampant in this area. Its so sad.
