We had been to Leopold's under the old owner's management pre-Covid and always loved the food and environment.
The new Leopold's, now owned by the chef who has been there since 2011, is nearly exactly the same in terms of decor and ambiance. The food is very similar, maybe a slightly updated menu, they even ring the bell when someone orders a boot of beer!
But the prices have gone up quite a bit, which is why I'm not giving a 5 star review. For two of us ordering one .5 beer each with one entree each and one side, bill was $112, plus the added tip. No dessert or large quantities of beer.
It also was only about half full on a Sunday night, when the middle table used to a jammed with tech bros. Maybe the pricing is driving folks off.
The food is still delicious. I had my favorite braised beef short ribs with mashed potatoes, crispy onions and red cabbage. Husband had weinerschnitzel and loved it. We both had portions to take home. The short ribs used to be $25, now they are $35. Side of potato pancake $7, beer $12.
It was really delicious and we will be back.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 13. Feb. 2024
We have been waiting Leopold's reopening for quite some time. Finally, it's back!
The vibrant ambiance was just the way we remembered before the pandemic. We had an amazing witness who was so attentive and patient. We ordered beers, beet salad, red cabbage, pretzel, weinerschnitzel and spaetzle - our all time favorites. The price came up noticeably but the flavor may have gone to the other direction.
The schnitzel was tender and tasty as usual but our beet salad and the potato cucumber salad on the schnitzel plate were very salty. Spaetzle was bland but red cabbage was there to rescue.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Benjamin P.San Francisco, Vereinigte Staaten01616. Apr. 2024
Love Leopold's. Nothing like drinking a boot and getting the bell rung for ya! All the food is good. The sauerkraut is elite.

Great to see this place reopen! I came here on a Saturday evening with some friends and had a fun time. We didn't have reservations, so we put ourselves on the waitlist, had a light bite nearby, and came back once we got notified via text that our booth was ready.
There's a decent selection of German beer from 0.3L to 2L (in a boot). I ended up getting a 1L stein, which felt like just the right amount without getting too bloated from all the liquids. If you order the 2L boot, the staff ring a bell and cheer you on. The food was tasty too, and my German friend said it was all pretty authentic.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 6. Juli 2023
I'm very happy this place is finally back open! Has very much of the old appeal and a fun place for dinner. It's not as loud as Oktoberfest but also not a quiet, romantic ambiance. The tables all fit 6 people and for those that are solo or in a pair, there's a communal table in the middle (which all lends to an environment with a bit of noise). On top of that, there are bells and applause anytime someone orders a boot. In summary, maybe not great for an intimate date night but perfect for a fun dinner with friends.
The food is good. I wouldn't classify it as culinary greatness, but Germany / Austria aren't really known for their food. I'd keep it simple and stick with the appetizers to split amongst your group. I've tried the Hungarian Paprika Beef Goulash to get a sense of their proper entrees and I wouldn't get it again. It's pretty bland. The flatbread on the other hand, I thought was very good. It's a savory mix of rich cheese, bacon and topped with cilantro.
I can't write a review on this place without touching on the beers. I mentioned it earlier but I'd like to emphasize das boot! There are very few places in the Bay Area where you can order these 2L novelties. They'll fill one up with any of the beers they have, which span the general German assortment you'd expectHelpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 2 - 1392513855. Juni 2023
Came here with a group of 9 people.
My brother made reservations, but when we showed up, looks like they didn't have any record of it. But they did scrabble together and find us a table.
Parking can be a pain in this area so I would uber!
They have a huge selection of beer. They even offer a boot sized beer! We opted for 1 liter, which is a ridiculous size already!
Food here was tasty! They did mess up our order but offered our friend a free beer for the inconvenience.
I ordered the chicken--- it was SOOO good. Normally, chicken is dry but this was perfectly tender. Everyone else seemed to really enjoy their meal. I also loved the charcuterie board. It also had chicken liver which was sooo tasty.
We loved our server. She was really awesome! We had some great banter and she just made our experience so much better. I would definitely come back again!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - 23. Mai 20232 check-ins
Think suppenkuche BUT slightly elevated --- let that sit for a moment, cause let's face it- the former is pretty darn good too!
This Austrian cuisine delivers a delicate hand, skillful execution and very high quality ingredients -- to put it simply. For your buddies who don't feel like drinking beer (I know who ARE they?!) -- there's plenty of rose and wine on the menu too. Bonus: there's a cute bar area to perch up on if riding solo. Service was excellent too. Well done guys!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 2 - 15. Nov. 2023
tldr; reservations recommended! come here for a lively night out over good beer and excellent sharing plates. expect to spend ~$30-$50 if you're wanting to get full and order drinks.
recs: pale ale, potato pancakes, wiener schnitzel
Made a reservation for Friday night with no problem the day before, but while walk-ins are apparently doable, it sounds like the restaurant becomes fully booked (for good reason)! Unsure what the grace period is for reservations, but on busy nights it's good to be timely.
Service was outstanding -- even though we were seated in the corner of the restaurant, our plates were cleared in a timely manner, waters were regularly refilled, and we had the chance to place additional orders.
I don't love beer, but the pale ale was super good. Won't stop recommending this to friends!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 24. Dez. 2023
Leopold's is a really special place, and if you enjoy Austrian/German cuisine, you should definitely visit. We've come here twice so far, and each time we've had a wonderful experience. The food is exceptional--the best Austrian/German in the Bay Area! The star of the show is the Wiener schnitzel--absolutely incredible! All of the entrees and appetizers we've tried have been delicious, especially the käsespätzle and bratwurst. They have a decent selection of German beers as well. Their desserts are sub-par, and I wouldn't recommend ordering these--but I'm optimistic that they will improve over time. Despite the less than satisfactory desserts, I still give them 5 stars because everything else is amazing, including the atmosphere! It's just so warm and cozy inside, with hospitable service, you really do feel like you're transported to an Austrian mountain town for a genuine European experience!
