Pretty quiet even though it was early (9ish), but seemed like a great place to watch a game. It was also pretty big and nice on the inside. Nothing special about it though. Also, it was kind of expensive for a Tuesday night (6+ for a vodka tonic).

There was no music while we were there, but im not sure if that was because the football game was on.

MacTurcaill's, located as it is in the rather dead Townsend St/Tara St sort of area, wouldn't necessarily be the first place you'd think of when planning your night out. I had been there a couple of times a number of years ago, and remember it being distinctly on the sedate side.

Which is all the more reason for my being rather pleasently surprised on a recent visit. The place was fairly buzzing by 9 o'clock, tunes were playing, the place was hopping. MacTurcaill's is very popular with the after work crowd, so it's kind of the over-25 crowd thar patronise the place. I still liked it though, so don't let that put you young 'uns off.
This also means that while heaving on a Friday, there are much less people on a Saturday. Friday is also best for drinks promos: €4 cocktails, anyone?

      Definitely worth a visit.

Nope. Still as sh!te as I remember.

It gets a star for price.

Service was slow too. Are they saving money by not having enough staff or losing money by serving the waiting punters too slowly?

      I dunno.

      I won't be back

MacTurcaills can be hit or miss and it usually depends on your company.
It can be perfect for groups if you reserve some tables and on weekends they do cocktails and deals on beer.

The food is quite good and most of the staff are friendly. A good pub if you are in a group.

A pint in Macturcaill's (or however they feel like spelling it) is the satisfying taste of resignation. It's neutral ground, lively enough for the more active crowd but woody and cheap enough for the grumpy drunk (no comment as to which category I consider myself to be in).

The food isn't great (vegetarians should just give up), the staff are overworked, the men's bathrooms are utterly vile (I think the toilets have lacked seats since I started college), and god help you if there's a DJ playing.

But despite all of that, there's something comforting about the place, even charming. The drink can be unexpectedly cheap, the cocktails aren't bad and there's a good chance that you'll bump into someone unusual, be it students, tourists or simply a kindred soul who's in the same bind as you.

i used to go in here lots when i was younger, im not sure what drew us to this pub, i mean is a bit off the beaten track, well our track anyway! its on the south side but fairly close to the liffey so if your a northsider its not too far to travel!

As i said im not sure what it was about this pub, it hasnt got any particular charm about it, it is almost an old man pub actually! the music isnt amazing or anything its just a bit of music in the back ground. anyway,we always went back and i dont know why!

i think the bes thing to do is go in here and see for yourself, maybe you will just leave or maybe you will keep going back for a reason unknown to you!

Mac Torciall's is something of an 'old man's' pub with a contemporary twist. Located opposite The Irish Times headquarters in Dublin's city centre, it prides itself on maintaining a jovial, contemporaneous atmosphere faithful to its metropolitan locality within the periphery of an old fashioned, rustic, country pub.

Oak beams a plenty, with raised platforms for group tables and snug lighting, this countrified alcove represents both sides of Dublin's disposition: a prevailing, urban metropolis that hasn't lost touch with the Ireland of long ago. This clever mix means that the pub never bows to any superficial means of making money out of mythology and claiming it to embody candid national identity. For €3 a pint on Tuesday evenings you can't go wrong within this captivating refuge away from the bustling Dublin city centre.

I've never had a bad night out in Mac Torcaill's. It's a bit random but from time to time you end up here for someone's birthday or another occassion. It's just great fun. There's lots of room. They place great cheesey music and it's good for a bit of banter.

My problem is I'm confused about how to get here (I never remember which street it's on, it's almost hidden) and getting home proves even trickier!

Roomy, but may get crowded on a saturday night

It's not a pub that will knock you off your feet, but it's good nonetheless, good value and a nice selection of drinks.

I think is one of the few modern pubs where you still get the service, atmosphere and quality pint of a real Irish pub!
The one of the differences are that you can enjoy all this in the comfortable and immaculately stylish environment inside the pub. The food is lovely and yummy and really good value.
Highly recommended!! One of my favourite pub/bars in Dublin, without doubt.
Inside the pub its very spacious but can get very packed out very quickly on weekends especially Saturdays. The music is really good, the DJ plays a mix of good oldies with the recent chart songs. The Drinks is not over-priced. Altogether, No complaints!
