Ah the Magnum Leisure Centre, another high school day trip favorite! On the outside this centre is a bit done in looking nowadays but the facilities on the inside are still in decent condition.
There is a large pool with a graduated shallow area for kids as well as a separate pool for learners. Although you could do lengths in the pool it's really designed more as a leisure pool. There are a couple of slides, not the most extreme or exciting of slides but the kids will still love it! I quite like to float round the flowing river thing; you know the thing I mean? When your little you always try unsuccessfully to swim against the flow and the life guards give you into trouble.
The centre has a sauna and a steam room which I tend to steer clear off because men who are old enough to be my father sometimes leer at me sweating in my swimsuit *shudder*.
The gym has lots of state of the art equipment and you never have to hang about for long to get on any of the machines. There is also a separate room dedicated to spin classes, or as I call them, doomular classes of death, definitely not for the fainthearted! The four rooms which offer an extensive range of fitness classes for all levels are air conditioned which is an absolute god send! There's nothing worse than trying to drag yourself through an hour long fitness class in a stale, sweaty room, yuck!
There is a separate gym specially designed for 11 to 16 year olds. I am obviously too old for it now but it looks fantastic and I really which I had something like that when I was that age.
The centre has a decent sized ice rink which is well maintained. They offer special "nightclub on ice" nights for 12 to 18 year olds. You rarely actually see any older teens at these nights though; it's mostly 12 to 14 year olds I'd say. They play chart music and there's colored lights and such like; all very exciting when you're that age and it ends at 9:30pm which isn't too late so that should keep the parents happy!
Another facility I am aware of at the Magnum centre but have never used myself is the indoor bowling green. I don't really know what to say about an indoor bowling green. Umm, great if it's raining and you really want to play bowls maybe? In fact there is a cracking soft play area in the centre which you could fling the little ones in while you enjoy a couple of hours of hard core indoor bowls, hard core and bowls? Hmm maybe not, but hey whatever gets you going!
As if all that wasn't enough to convince you to take a trip to the Magnum centre there is also a theatre! I have taken my little cousin to see "The Singing Kettle" in this theatre and it was torture. That's no reflection on the theatre itself though; it was as good as any for that sort of thing.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lisa-Jane H.Ayr, Vereinigtes Königreich39626. Apr. 2016
I take my little girl swimming here regularly, it's a bit old and dated but all you need for swimming for fitness or just having a splash about.
There are excellent sized family changing rooms and a good number of them, lockers are either 50p or 20p depending on size.
The pool area has a small rectangular baby pool perfect for first swims (I took my little girl here when she was just 6months old)
The main pool has a large rectangular pool for lane swimming, then there are some areas for younger children to splash about in (waterfalls, big spouts, a small elephant slide, a crocodile with water sprays around it and a shelf with bubbly water - I will take a picture next time I go, my descriptions are a bit random!) There are also sauna rooms and a small warmer circular pool. I always leave this till the end of our visit, the water in the main pool seems freezing after!
Parking at the Magnum is never a problem and the visit is definitely worth the £2.90 price for the two of us!!
There are other facilities: an ice rink, squash courts, fitness centre but I haven't used them so can't comment!
If you really want a treat make a morning of it and visit GRO coffee round the corner for lunch/brunch afterwardsHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Amanda Q.Glasgow, Vereinigtes Königreich336036122. Mai 2010
Dodgy looking from the outside, my frind had a job here once as a lifeguard a long time ago and it possibly has not changed one single bit since then.
The usual facilities exist, from pool, steam room, sauna, gym, etc. Most are worse and more limited than any other gyms. I can't help but think that I would love to feel a bit less sleazed upon.
Not the best, not even good, try somewhere else.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Eleanor M.Glasgow, Vereinigtes Königreich52124097427. März 2010
I can't talk for the whole of the Leisure Centre as the only experience I've had here is going to the swimming pool when I was younger and The Magnum was always my favourite place!
I always remember that it always seemed to have so much character and I never had a bad time here. I'll never forget the frog shoot that they have, I'm not sure if they still have it, but it was awesome! The frog shoot was always my first stop before splashing around in the pools, good times!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Qype User (squirr…)Kilmarnock, Vereinigtes Königreich25121. Nov. 2008
This is a great sports facility with lots of activities to choose from - swimming, ice skating, health suite, fitness studio, softplay area, cafe and even a cinema.
There are 2 swimming areas - a smallish kids pool and a sprawling main pool. with slides, a heated outdoor pool, a hot tub and a Jacuzzi. Swimming lessons for children and adults are offered as part of the leisure programme.
The ice rink plays host to ice discos, curling and ice hockey.
All in all a great centre for families and the serious fitness enthusiast.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (moota2…)Wemyss Bay, Vereinigtes Königreich5178321. Nov. 2008

The all in one sports centre, swimming, ice skating, squash, sports hall. It also has a small cinema, a bar and a rather good fast food bar.
The swimming pool consists of a small paddeling pool for non swimmers, a large pool which is slightly deeper, water slides, two flumes, one of which ends in a whirlepool, and an out door pool. The out door pool can be reached from inside the Magnam main pool.
The ice rink holds ice discos on a regular basis, ice hockey games and curling. Skates can be hired.
The sports has can play host to football, badminton etc. There is also a fun area for younger children where the soft furniture allows them to jump and play.
There is indoor bowling, gym facilities and the usual steam/sauna rooms.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (asset2…)Glasgow, Vereinigtes Königreich019132. Okt. 2008
Everything under one roof - from swimming with their flumes, ice skating, curling, bowls, squash, badminton and cinema/theatre.
Only downside is the parking, sometime svery difficult to get parked. Also the walk way is windy and cold as the wind comes stright off the sea.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (andyge…)Irvine, Vereinigtes Königreich32611528. Sept. 2008
when it opened the Magnum was the largest leisure centre of its type in Britain. Situated in the beach park in Irvine its boasts unrestricted views of the isle of Arran. This two tier complex has every conceivable facility for sport you could look for.It also has various bars cafes and even a theatre and cinema.Although due to current economic circumstances it is not as busy as it once was it is still THE place where locals and travellers alike can benefit from the extensive facilities on offer.
