The worst market I have ever been to in my life. (And I've been to plenty) This place is supposed to be one of the famous places to go to when coming to Belem. What you'll find instead is a market that stinks (Literally, it really smells here) and completely dirty. The fruits and vegetables are not fresh. Ok. You can find fresh fruits and vegetables but a majority of the vendors selling them are not fresh. The dirty, old and spoiled fruits and vegetables are tossed onto the ground for everyone to step around.
If you want to get even sicker, then try the shrimp which has probably been sitting outside in the sun for days waiting to be sold. If this was in the US, the health department would shut this place down and some developer would come and build condo's here. The only semi-good place to buy something is in the fish area which is located inside. Everything else is sitting outside. The inside is a lot cooler because there is actual ice that the fish are resting on to be sold. However, the only problem is that the prices of the fish are expensive. If you walk about 500 m past the Mercado Ver-o-peso, you'll find the fishermen who caught the fish and sold them to the people selling them. These guys will sell you the same fish for half the price.
There are also non-food vendors here as well. You can find hot sauces, spices, "natural viagra" (yes I'm serious) among other vendors. The hot sauces are literally 1& 2 L plastic soda bottles filled with the spicy peppers. Water and olive oil are added to this concoction and sold to people. I GUARANTEE that these bottles are not cleaned out before they are sold.
If you really want to get food poisoning and nasty diarrhea, then come to the Mercado Ver-o-peso and buy ANYTHING here. You won't leave Belem disappointed if you are able to leave.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Qype User (israel…)Belém, Brasilien517256. Mai 2011

lugar muito bom, encontra-se de tudo, realmente é onde você enxergará o Pará em sua raiz. Peca um pouco pela limpeza, mas não é nada absurdo.
