Othello's Cafe

Othello's is a nice cafe just off Princes St in Stockport. It's a little "greasy spoon" but it serves nice, decent food and drinks at really good prices. They have a great menu with baked potatoes, sandwiches, salads, hot meals, toasties, breakfasts and burgers. The cafe is clean,well kept and has large seating areas upstairs and downstairs. The staff are really nice, and the manager is usually around helping out. They have a specials menu every day where you can get a cheese and onion omelette with chips and salad for £2.95, and the portions are good too.

The café seemed OK when we walked in and we could sit outside which was good. We were quickly served by a grumpy man who had a bad day. The place is liked by the disabled so that is good. I think one of his disabled customers must have wound him up as I have mental health problems. I was with my Support Worker and she noticed too how grumpy he was.
The prices are very reasonable and must admit the coffees were very nice. Did not have any food so cannot comment on that. The place does need a little money spending on it and some better staff. Later I looked up it's Hygiene rating with the Food Standards Agency and was horrified when I found out that it had a rating of 1 and was inspected in 2014 by Environmental Health and needs Major Improvements in Hygiene standards and any lower rating could have meant the place could be closed down. Go to the Foods Standards Agency website and have a look for yourself the rating the café has received.

I had previously been a fan of this cafe and was a regular. Went in yesterday and ordered a late meal, I did not realise they were close to closing until after I ordered. The meal was utterly ruined by someone mopping around my table as I ate. The smell of disinfectant was pungent and made me feel ill. It was all I could taste. I left as quickly as I could without finishing.

There is no point serving someone food and then making it impossible for them to enjoy eating it. They should not have served me if they felt it was too late and I was going to be in the way.

Very disappointed and will now have to find a new regular cafe.

Othello's is a down-to-earth place to eat, it's good all round and has a welcoming atmosphere. The only criticism I used to have was it freely allowed smoking, however since the smoking ban, thats no longer a problem. Awesome food and very affordable. It was even the venue for scientific research into what makes the perfect bacon sandwich, the somewhat ambiguous conclusion being 'It depends how you like it'. Othello's specialize in the more hearty and simple meals you can't help say no to, chips and gravy, sausage and egg on toast, soups and sandwiches, if it ain't broke, don't fix it :)
