Slug And Lettuce

My visit to the Slug & Lettuce was on a whim, my friend asked me if I wanted to go for a drink on the riverside after a long day at work. Drinks turned into dinner and a generally okay experience at a chain bar/ restaurant.

As an avid whisky fan I was looking for a fairly popular whisky to drink in the beer garden (outside seating) but they only had two or three different kinds of very commercial spirits. Weirdly my friend was asked if he wanted ice in his pint since it was a hot day and "some people just like it in their drink". Our drinks came to just over £8.

The outside seating area was... dirty. All of the tables had dirty dishes on them (with pigeons eating from them), and the waitresses did not seem to be in a hurry to clear them. We finally found a table that hadn't been wiped down but had only a drinks tray on it, and sat down with our drinks. We both ordered burgers that arrived very well done to the extent of appearing black. The onion rings were rock solid, and there was a pitifully small heap of coleslaw on the edge of the plate.

Their saving grace from being given one star was the great selection of cocktails they have to offer, and the calm ambience inside the bar.

Slug and Lettuce recently moved into this venue from their premises further along the riverside towards Teddington. Probably a good move, they are in a more prominent position here. It's the kind of bar I feel pretty comfortable in, even if I arrive before friends and end-up on my own for a while.


There are floor to ceiling windows here, all the better to take-in the lovely river views and watch the world go by. I recently visited at lunchtime, just for a coffee and had to wait quite a while to be served, although they weren't remarkably busy. Probably too few staff on though.


The waitress was quite a character, unintentionally entertaining as she regaled me with details of her day and how weird her customers had been. (I didn't invite that but it was quite amusing, if a little too much information when I just wanted to chill and enjoy my coffee...) When the coffee did arrive it was delicious (and Fairtrade) so I would definitely return but not when time is at a premium...

For a big chain, this branch has got it right, location, service (most of the time), food and drinks. A great place to have a much needed rest after walking around Kingston (with shopping bags). We had the mezze which is a nice platter to share.


Various special offers at differnt times make it interesting and you can save quite a bit of money, best to check their website to see what is on offer when.

Great place to go for pre-drinks on a Friday or Saturday, it's a good atmosphere and a good ratio of guys and girls.
Music is not too loud so you are able to talk to people without shouting in each other's ears, normally a good crowd of people too.
Staff are friendly and there's 50% off food every Monday night. The food isn't great but it's not bad either, portions are good and I would definitely eat there again.
The one thing I will say is that I don't think the cocktails are very good, it's probably because I've worked in more strict places though because all my friends say they like them.
Definitely give it a go.

This restaurant was totally unable to cope with the Bank Holiday demand. The kitchen was closed for at least an hour and a half before we decided to leave, so it could have been closed for even longer. I have never experienced a kitchen this unable to cope before. Although bar staff were rushed off their feet, when ordering a cocktail, they asked if I wanted a quicker drink. It doesn't matter how busy it is, don't try and change my drink order! They offered discounts for those who had got there in time to order food, but offered us (who had only been able to order drinks) absolutely nothing, despite waiting around for food for most of the afternoon. Won't be going there to enjoy the outside seating on a sunny day anymore, unless I only want a drink.

Really nice location, but I can't help feeling that it's a bit lacking in atmosphere Probably because it's a chain and needs to live up to the 'look and feel' but it makes it one of those stop off places before you move to the next bar

With comfy seats and yummy cocktails, you cant go wrong. This is a great place to get lunch with friends or somewhere to start your Saturday night. Although busy at weekends, the week nights are intimate.

Visited on Monday, very good quality in drinks and food. I usually go there once a month but didn't know about the 50% off on all food on Monday! Moreover, they offer vouchers through their website, I got one for £5 off drinks but couldn't be combined with the offer they had on food. I'll be visiting more definitely...

Great bar service and excellent food choice, food very tasty and cheap for the quality that you get. Happy hour from thursday to sunday from 5pm offers great range of Mojitos and other drinks.
