I can't write only quick review about this place. I was invited for pint in this pub before meetings friends.
Inside very nice and friendly atmosphere. Lots to choice of bears and drinks. It is great place to go for a drink or meeting friends.
If you don't know area it is not easy to fund but for that you have GPS lol.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Emma Louise M.Bellevue, Vereinigte Staaten1143136515798. Feb. 2012Aktualisierter Beitrag
Well, lo and behold, I'm having to bump the New Oxford up a star. I'll tell you why I'm remarking it. One drizzly Sunday afternoon, I accompanied Vickie S to watch a couple of football matches in the New Oxford, shortly to be joined by one of our friends. Having been told there was no food at the King's Arms, I assured my mates that the New Oxford doesn't serve grub on Sundays at all. It says so on the website, in reviews, everything. As we arrived a sign greeted us informing us of which days food was served. Monday to Saturday. Cue much lip trembling from the very hungry football fanatics. Even when inside they still tried their luck and asked the bartender if there was any food at all. When met with a negative, as well as a round of drinks we bought a round of crisps. Every Seabrooks flavour you could think of.
And then later, while our friend was enjoying a cigarette outside, the very sweet bartender who'd been lovely to us throughout the ridiculous crisp mountain exchange dropped a packet of mini Cheddars and a packet of pork scratchings on our table. 'Here you go, on me,' he said with a smile. We looked at each other. She, aware of my Yelping duties, turned to me and said, 'I think you're gonna have to add another star.'
'I think so too,' I responded. The pair of us gushed about just how nice that was. Free snacks and very kind service is something so rare in cities, and in that little corner of Salford, on the very outskirts of Manchester city centre, we were privileged to receive such wonderful things. New Oxford, well done. I'll be in to try the food very soon, which I'm sure will be fantastic.
I also tried a new fruit beer. Passionfruit, on tap. To quote Romeo Montague, 'Did my heart love til now?' Heaven in a glass, I assure you. Utter heaven. Is it bad that I'm craving this beverage on a Wednesday morning?Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 025. Nov. 2009Vorheriger BeitragAh, I miss the triad of great pubs in the Chapel Street/Crescent area of Salford, and The New Oxford is one of them. It's a dinky, cute and exceptionally neat little place with very carefully positioned beer logos and posters all around and a vast array of real ales to choose from.
SO VAST, in fact, that as the blonde and I took our seats we found on our table what we very quickly labelled 'The Beer Bible'. It was enough to rival the cocktail menu in Socio. There's so much variety on there, from my beloved fruit beers to specialities that reach a whopping 10% alchohol content. There are even beers that are supposed to taste like biscuits, like 'Cookie' with its cinnamon and buttery undertones. I settled for a strawberry one and I wasn't disappointed.
The atmosphere is a little different from the other two in the triad though. While small and indeed cosy, it's neatness makes you think that if Phoebe from Friends ran the King's Arms, this gaff would be Monica's. Everything is superbly tidy and clean, which perhaps takes away a bit of character but as more of a Monica myself it doesn't irk me in the slightest. Maybe it could just do with a little more clutter to warm it up a tad.
Bexley Square is a great location that as you step into it, kind of makes you forget the rest of Salford. It's a very pretty and architecturally beautiful little spot next to the gorgeous magistrates' court building, and The New Oxford certainly ensures that it makes the most of this, offering pleasant outside seating in summer and patio heaters aplenty in these nippy winter months. Again, it's also perfect if you're on your way back from town and fancy popping in. Our miniature pub crawl led us from the King's Arms to here, topped off by the Crescent, and it's a little route I'd highly recommend (and didn't realise so many other people took - a good sign, certainly). There's also a perfectly positioned TV for sports and an electronic jukebox, alongside traditional pub grub and more unusual beers than you can shake a stick at. Come along and give this adorable little pub some love. - Ian M.Withington, Vereinigtes Königreich12111711223. Feb. 2016
Another reliably good traditional pub on Chapel Street.
It's neither super modern, nor old, but you do get some good music played at a reasonable volume, a couple of rooms - the back rooms generally seems emptier.
You also get a great range of ales. And if you're not sure what to drink the bar staff are extremely friendly and happy to talk about what you might like.
In you're in the area, definitely pop in.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Melissa N.Las Vegas, Vereinigte Staaten123330. Jan. 2015
Stopped in for a pint and had a blast. The entire experience was surprisingly enjoyable. Incredible assortment of beers and highly informative staff. I passed the cold day with new friends and a greater appreciation for dark lagers.
Anyone who finds themselves in the area must definitely stop by.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Pete W.Salford, Vereinigtes Königreich2211. Dez. 2014
A great little pub with the best selection of beers and larger.
A friendly welcome is always garanteed and the staff know there stuff about what they sell (a rarity these days)
This place is a must for anyone in to real ale or imported larger
Can't think of anything bad about this placeHelpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ellie B.City Centre, Manchester, Vereinigtes Königreich761272074. März 2014
Belgian cherry beer? Check. Jukebox jam-packed with indie and Britpop classics? Check. Friendly staff? Check.
This award-winning real ale pub is tucked away in a quiet square in Salford and offers over 100 bottled beers from Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as a large variety of continental draught beers.
I went along there for the first time on a Saturday afternoon with a group of friends and enjoyed a warm, cosy couple of hours of drinking Morte Subite Kriek (one of the Belgian cherry lagers on draught) and putting on our favourite Madchester anthems - right up my street, literally!
I will probably end up being a regular :)Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - B A.Silver Spring, Vereinigte Staaten097. Apr. 2019
100% British pub. Fantastic! We stayed nearby when we were playing tourists in Manchester, the New Oxford was quite busy on a Friday night. Service was good, quaint neighborhood pub.

The New Oxford is, for me, the best pub in Manchester! It thoroughly deserves the 5 stars given to it by Emma-Louise. The place is lovely and as she rightly points out, but needs reiterating for the blokes, the range of ales is nothing short of phenomenal. It's impossible to recommend a single one, firstly because they change regularly and secondly because they are all so beautiful. If you drink ale, this place is an absolute must visit! Their own house ale, 'The New Oxford' supplied by Northern Brewery, is usually available, and should not be missed!
There are also a range of fruit beers which though very sweet, are delicious. Emma- Louise writes that she will be soon returning to try the food, and I couldn't encourage her more. The home cooked menu is served from 11am-6pm and was absolutely faultless, like the rest of the pub! So, the Seabrook crisps have been mentioned, and the pork scratchings...but not best bar snack in the wide selection, the Bombay mix! They almost have a snack for every one of their array of beers. Someone should write a guide to which snack compliments each ale most delicately...
It's a lovely place to sit inside, or outside on Bexley Square if it's sunny. It's one of the few places in Salford these days that can claim to be picturesque. It also has a decent Juke Box. The staff are not just nice but unusually helpful and lovely. You can also rent a function room for gatherings.
The only problem, you won't be able to leave without terrible feelings of woe and dismay. And it's only right to give at least a few of the drinks a taste while you're there....Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (MissCa…)Manchester, Vereinigtes Königreich56295153. Mai 2010
I must confess that I'm slightly shocked at the fact that I'm the first person on Qype to review The New Oxford - particularly as it's pretty much a Chapel Street institution (and pretty much the best pub in Salford).
It may only be a small place, but it's got a wonderfully diverse history behind it. It opened in the 1830s, so has drunk in all of the sights and sounds of working class Salford, has featured in the classic 1941 kitchen sink drama 'Love on the Dole', and infamous Mancunian mardy bloke and iconic frontman Mark E. Smith of The Fall is a regular (although I wouldn't put too much store by this, as he's a regular of pretty much every single pub in Manchester). But above all these things is that fact that it's just an ace little boozer.
It's just the right size to be cute and cozy without being oppressive, it's CAMRA approved, so you're guaranteed to get a cracking pint of the good stuff there, and when it's busy it's atmosphere is downright electric. And now the weather's getting warmer, you'll probably have to get there early if you want to nab yourself a good seat. Take it from me, this place fills up FAST. I've yet to have a pub lunch here, but I have a feeling that when I do, I'll leave feeling very satisfied indeed.
A truly fine pub - and one you really should pop into if you ever find yourself stranded in Salford.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - John L.Manchester, Vereinigtes Königreich3213718. März 2014
Worth the walk out of Man city centre to this great little boozer off Chapel Street in Salford. A fantastic range of belgian beers, and plenty of interesting ales on tap (nod to Wakefield's Fernandes especially appreciated). It's not the most happening place, so perhaps only for beer nerds like me.
