The CAID is in the kind of neighborhood where I went with the "crew" to pick up dead bodies in abandoned buildings called in by their crack buddies. Except, I never went to those places at night. Holy shiz, creepy.
I saw a big bowl of yelpsticks that took all of the self control I had in my body not to take the whole bowl and dump it into my never ending purse. Yelpsticks are my salvation!
The cupcakes were fantastic if not hard to eat while holding a drink and trying oh so hard not to get the cupcake all over my face. Cherry flavored vodka was pretty win. But I just couldn't bring myself to drink PBR.
The art stuff hanging up was super cool! Juston and I are now art-sisters! I bought the one-eyed monster, naturally. I loved being able to actually afford the art being displayed!
I chilled with my expanding entourage. I love that people finally put together dude with a turban = V and that if he's there, I'm somewhere close by. That just cracks me up.
Creepiness of getting there and leaving the area aside, this was the best yelp party to date! Hurray! Hope all the noobz liked it too!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 26. Jan. 2010
I've never been here, or this part of Detroit for that matter. I'm not even sure where I was. I took 75 to 94 and exited and there were a lot of one way roads that made it confusing. On the way a pack of wild dogs crossed our path. Auspicious? you ask. Doubtful. But it was the first pack of wild dogs in Detroit I have ever seen. We trudge onward and then near the Boy Scout Headquarters we see another pack of wild dogs or it may have been the same pack that can run very quickly. I knew the Boy Scouts wouldn't help me if I got in trouble so we trudged on.
The Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit was located in the middle of nowhere. Others have commented that it was sketchy but I didn't feel unsafe. Well, except for the packs of wild dogs. We walked in the doors and a trio of lovely ladies had me put my name on a nametag and gave me a Yelp! Lunchbox.
We walked in, hung up our coats and did a quick run through. After almost no sign we saw I Yelp Elite Valerie "Golden Godess" G. coming down the stairs. We talked and got in line for drinks. The friendly bartenders were serving Zodiac Vodka, Zodiac Cherry Vodka and Pabst Blue Ribbon. I drank the Cherry Vodka because I always go with the cherry option.
We walked into the other room and someone commented that the stage looked like "Napoleon Dynamite". I couldn't concur since I hadn't seen ND since it was in the theaters. What I did notice was that the Theme Song to Twin Peaks by Angelo Badalamenti was playing. I recognized it right away because I love how haunting it sounds.
Time passed, everyone arrived, and it was an amazing time. The food looked amazing but I didn't eat any. The art was amazing but I didn't buy any. The music was amazing but I didn't play any (and you should be grateful for that).
It was nice to talk to so many nice people and have so many great conversations with fellow yelpers. I tried to get people to only drink the vodka that matched their Zodiac sign, just to wreak havoc upon the bartenders. Luckily no one was paying attention to me and my lies.
The bands that played were really good and their music was so well suited for the venue and the event. I really enjoyed it.
It was a great time. As we were leaving I heard the "Theme to Twin Peaks" playing again in the back room. I like it when an evening is bookended so neatly.
Thank you, everyone who worked to put on this amazing party. It was truly appreciated by many.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Joe T.Shelby Township, Vereinigte Staaten37340814224. Jan. 2010
I was blown away by this Yelp event. Located at a hidden gem, a diamond in the rough - the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit near the Woodbridge neighborhood of Detroit; this was an event to remember. The immediate area was a little urban blighted and dismal, kind of dark and scary - but as long as you know your way around, it was easy to navigate to and from the area as it's just a stone throw from Wayne State University.
From when I first walked in I was impressed by the warm, cozy, urban, artsy and industrial vibe this multi-level building had. There were nifty Yelp giveaway items like shot glasses, chapsticks, and cool Zodiac Vodka goodies too, like beer openers. The drinks were all Zodiac vodka sponsored so I definitely got a moderate buzz going with a handful of Cherry Vodka tonics. The food was yummy mini-sandwiches from good ol' Mudgie's and pulled pork tacos on corn tortillas from the snazzy Toast restaurant in Birmingham. The tower of scrumptious cupcakes and plenty of Vitamin Water giveaways only added to the experience.
There was plenty of great art pieces to look at and make conversation, and we were always moving on our feet - from bar to bar, mingling, eating, and enjoying some great love music in the mini-stage room. The music was really cool indie-rock type stuff - not so sure about the name of the band - but they definitely had a cool vibe.
Being pretty budget these days, me and my G/F, Krupa U. kind of made this a date night and it made for a great start to our night as we made off to Ferndale later on in the night around 10pm. This was by far the most fun Yelp! event I have been to. Yelp Detroit got off to an awesome 1-year of Yelping. Happy Yelping everyone. Keep up the awesome work, Mariah!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 25. Jan. 2010
Great party, as usual! A big thanks to everyone who made it happen (and Mariah for getting em all together!).
My favorites at the party (which is to say I also LOVE swag and am very proud of my lunchbox!!): the live music and the dj (apparently I hate silence), visiting with Vickie, Miriam, the On the Rocks Detroit ladies, and Liz & Rob (sorry for whoever I missed...), the cupcakes (especially the red velvet with the cream cheese frosting and the chocolate mint one), the cherry vodka with tonic - YUM!, and my hubby for company (hey, just being honest here!).
Notes to self for next time: don't lose another shoe on the tricky stairs, try to rest up during the day so you're up to being on your feet all night, get some coordination so you can stand and eat at the same time.
Oh, and sorry to the guy I walked in on in the bathroom. I promise I didn't see anything.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 26. Jan. 2010
Great time. This was my first event as an elite and it was awesome! I'd never even heard of the CAID before this event, I assumed it was the Modern Art Museum by the DIA.
The place was a bit cramped but that made for closer conversations. The food was awesome, the drinks were awesome, the art was awesome and the people were awesome! Except for one weird guy who insisted he went to high school with me and my friend, and upon further pressing couldn't answer any info about our school. We kept asking until he finally walked away... But everyone else was cool. I had an interesting conversation with Rodger W. Thanks for the advice! The bands were awesome too, I'm definitely going to check out the Scarlet Oaks some more. If only Mudgie's wasn't so far out of the way for me, or else I would definitely make it a regular stop. Toast's BBQ pulled pork tacos were very interesting too. I'd never had anything like them, and I'll have to try something else there.
All in all, an exciting and hip event. Thanks again to Mariah and everyone else who put together this great night. I can't wait til the next meet!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 27. Jan. 2010
The CAID is a small gem, tucked away in the mostly depopulated neighborhood just West of where Tiger Stadium used to stand. Hard to find unless you know what you're looking for, the space is worth the search. It's a long, narrow, 2-story, white and brick rough-hewn blank slate that's perfect for exhibiting art. Heck, the graffiti outside of the building alone is worth a trip.
Then there's the party - Yelp's Art Attack could not have been better planned or executed. From the competently-displayed exhibit, to the light nibbles, to the (free!) drinks menu, to the entertainment, each element was well thought out and blended well to create a harmonious, "ahhh! just-right" feel. The party-goers themselves, however, are what really made the party the "it" event of the weekend. I've never met a friendlier, wittier, chattier group.
Bottom line: If you missed it, you missed IT!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Krupa U.Shelby charter Township, Vereinigte Staaten2031886925. Jan. 2010
Timing couldn't have been perfect! I'm so happy to have my 100th review be that of a Yelp event! The Art Attack at the CAID was awesome! Although it was in a rather shady part of town, it was nice to get in line and see some familiar faces on the inside! (Shout outs to Joe H. and Kellie B. and Torrie B.!) I felt like we were part of some secret society lol!
I missed the last art event so I was pretty geeked to make this one. The space is great, the artwork was awesome and thought provoking! The open bar was a +++++++!! The sammies from Mudgies (one of my personal fav. places) and getting to try those juicy carnitas from Toast (a place i really want to check out now) was great too! The band kicked ass! The lead singer has a captivating voice! What's the name of the band? and where can i get their cd??? The collage with Yelper submitted pics, the cupcake tower, the vitamin water, the Yelp goody bag with all the free goodies! WHEW, Mariah, are you secretly Britney Spears, because OOPS you did it again! This is by far one of the best Yelp events I've been to, bravo!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Rodger W.Huntington Woods, Vereinigte Staaten3003285023. Jan. 2010
Yet another off the hook Yelp event courtesy of Mariah and the Yelp Detroit team. CAID is a wonderful venue to appreciate art, and is also a perfect spot for a party. The food from Mudgies was delicious, and the PBR and Vodka really went down smooth. The music was very good, and provided a great friendly party ambiance. The crowd was diverse, friendly and fun.
It was great to see again Dea A, Vikram, Toni C, Dan R. Finally, I got to meet Big Al "prince of pozole" P, Tom "burger boy" F, Eric "brooklyn slices" P, and Jeffery "argyle boy" B, and finally Valerie "goddess" G. Valerie, I really like how you roll.
I can't wait for the next event. Mariah rules!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Toni C.Ferndale, Vereinigte Staaten8612325. Jan. 2010
This has been my favorite Yelp party so far. It was such a fun time but it went by way too fast! All of the sponsors were great and generously contributed to make the night amazing. The bands and DJ were really cool. I hadn't heard them before so it was cool to get to check them out. I was also happy to see that some of the art had sold and for some of the artists showing for the first time, they got some excellent exposure.
It's always cool to see everyone come out and have a good time, Dan, Tara, Dea, V, Rodger, Tom, Al, Jeffrey, Betsey, Daniel, Valerie and everyone else that I met for the first time sorry I didn't have enough time to talk more to you guys. The night flew by! Juston did you sneak out early? :) I tried to find you.
Overall a really fun time! Can't wait for next time.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tom F.Farmington, Vereinigte Staaten95844515423. Jan. 2010
Time to bring down the house with the first Yelpiversay!
I had a great time from going upstairs in the Toast-y room and Mudgieing people over to grab a sandwich and checking out the art from local artists and talking to them to find out what their inspiration was to the checking out the signs of the Zodiac(vodka) and relying on the good ol' PBR. Grabbed my yelpstick and pins listened to some crazy DJ(Jeremy...Mariah's lovely) some great music and another awesome party. Mariah, you did it again....enjoy the spa...Looking forward to the next event....Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
