I've been going to this pub for beers and a bite to eat for over 10 years now as my monthly trips to Rye usually lead to a pint with my parents.
Good service and well-kept ales are always on hand, and its decent size means there's usually space for everyone.
The meals I've had in the "Wipers" have been great for quality and value (hence the photo of a delicious dressed crab uploaded to this profile), and usually use the freshest seasonal ingredients the area has to offer. Seafood's usually the speciality, especially during the Rye Scallop Festival, and the shared platter is well worth trying if you have a few fellow fish-eating foodies with you.
You'll definitely have to book early for a Sunday lunch in my experience.
The pub's very comfortable, whether you're sat by the fire in winter or in the big beer garden in the summer, and if you're looking for entertainment then visit on a Friday when local bands take centre stage.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Patty D.Cedar Rapids, Vereinigte Staaten1281513. Ordered a few pints, the ladies bathroom was gross but the service was ok and the beer garden was nice.

As the name suggests, this fine historic pub is adjacent to Ypres Castle (Rye Tower) in the picturesque medieval East Sussex town. It's a traditional pub in the best sense. Homely, rustic interior, down to earth staff, solid pub food, a generous selection of hand-pumped real ales - and on top you get a terrace garden with splendid views on the marshes. When in Rye, make sure to visit the scenic Ypres Castle Inn (as well as the Rye Waterworks Micropub, which is about ten minutes away). Beers are adequately priced, kept fresh and crisp on the premises. Recommended.

Wandered in here on a cold and grey day after arriving in Rye. Lovely place to spend an afternoon drinking VERY local cider (Sam from down the road makes the best one). I had the Mac and cheese and it was perfect. Wonderful local place, super friendly and great atmosphere. The barkeep is very knowledgeable and friendly and clearly passionate about the business.

We were there on April 2nd and it was pretty nice. Not busy, not empty. We ordered or food and... somehow they forgot one of the dishes? And them said they're wasn't any of it left? Which means my friend had nothing to eat. They had lasagna in the menu but there wasn't any left and... I mean we ordered and the girl repeated our order, including the lasagna, and when the food came it had just turned into haddock? Not sure how that happened but that was not good.
Food was ok though! And the place looks great and it is right next to the actual Ypres castle.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Qype User (cassie…)Dublin, Irland714952022. Juni 2012
Very historical! Sometimes castles are renovated and done up with interiors and furniture which I really enjoy but every so often it is nice to see a castle in it's more natural state. It's been around for hundreds of years so it would have no furniture and be a little ruined which is what gives it it's charm and appeal. It isn't a huge castle so really won't take you too long to look around but it's situated sort of on a cliff and there are some cannons to see which are pretty cool. It's a sweet castle and very popular in Rye.

This place has a very good selection of Real Ales and a very nice beer garden. The staff is very friendly. We spent a week in Rye, and Ypres was our go-to pub in Town.
The food is good, but the menu is a bit limited, and I don't remember any pies. The roast pork bellies is excellent!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (Fidel2…)London, Vereinigtes Königreich01619. Feb. 2012
As a family of four we found this a welcome pub. Everything from the free bar snacks, to friendly staff. We ordered the traditional Sunday roast. 2 large and 2 kids portions which were half price. The food was excellent, tasty and lots of it. This plus Harvey's ale on tap made for a lovely day out. Will come again. Only downside was price, £10 for a Sunday roast, £3.50 for a pint and £5.50 for a glass of house red seemed a tiny steep but all was worth it in the end and the town itself was beautiful.
