I love living in Berkeley because i have access to places such as this. Where else can i catch all the great art-hosue films. Its hard not to rant and rave about the great films i've seen there, because thats not really the theatre itself, but rest assured, they play great movies.
Best part of the theatre are the midnight movies. Durring the school year they take it upon themselves to select a cult favorite to play each week. the showings are packed to the rafters with costumed fans. The movie is preceded by games, to get you into the midnight movie mood, and a reenactment of a scene from the movie.
be warned, if you want to watch a movie in peace and quite, this isnt for you.
There's tons of parking. That's the best i can say for this theatre. It's just like every other Century Theatre anywhere in the country. The seats do have that nice reclining feature, making it all the easier to fall asleep during one of the blockbuster movies that they show here. If you want something in French, something with a serious plot, something that makes you think, look elsewhere. Ok, that might be a bit overly critical, but this is not the place to find those gems of the cinema that only populate the Art house theatres. I come here if I want to see a major release with someone who's car-bound.
When i hear the name Four Star, i was quite amused, "Finaly, i thought, a movie theatre that's being honest about itself." Truth be told, i think they're giving themselves a little to much credit. Based on the building alone, it couldn't earn much more than a two, maybe a three. But of course, you go to movie theatres for the movies, not the building. If a theatre plays good stuff, it gets a 5, unless of course the building is so awful it detracts from the movie going experience. Unfortunatly, this place is a little to cramped, a little to dingy and the ushers don't speak much english. Leaving an apropriate 4 stars.
As far as I can tell it's the only independent movie theatre in the whole of Marin county, at the very least the only one in San Rafael. It's a great theatre, full of fun artistic details. Plus it shows great films.
As lame as it sounds, KQED acounts for most of the TV that i watch. Whether it's cooking shows on a lazy saturday afternoon, insightful documenteries at night or my personal favorite, the late night sunday lineup. Starting at 10:30 or so, you get Imagemakers; a showcase of some brilliant independent short films. The worst are good, the best are breathtaking, or hillarious pending on the genre. Following Imagemakers is one of three great shows. Either you get Spark*, a showcase of local artists, which is always really cool or you get two of the funniest shows on broadcast; Fawlty Towers and Coupling. I do have a soft spot for British humour, but regardless, these shows are beyond compare.
The theatre is gorgeous, full of guilded art deco touches in every corner. Lavish red curtains descend from gold sconces in the ceiling, chandeliers light the lobby. The seats are nice and spacious with ample leg-room. This might not seem important, but remember you might be sitting there for 2 or three hours, maybe more pending on the movie. The choice of movies is also very good. The proper balance of art house with major releases, always a variety. Of course no ride down 580 is complete without gawking at the newest liberal message on the marque, posted by the owned who publicaly announced that people of all ages are welcome to watch fahrenheit 9/11 despite its R rating.
My queue just broke 200, at the rate i watch movies, i have years and years of movies in my future. Anything you want, they have, anything you might like, they also have. Anything you can think of possibly liking, they seem to have. True, it is just another excuse to minimize social interactions, but i like this one.
I just returned from a midnite screening of Donnie Darko, it was a blast. The employee's knew exactly what was needed, they had the Sparkle Motion Dancers, the Candy Cannon as well as people reciting dialouge (Although one of them was me). A great time was had by all.
Another of the Century chain of theatres. This is exactly identical to almost every other Century theatre in the world. It plays wide release films. It has expensive popcorn and soda. Watch the latest sequel to a mediocre horror film, the next cookie cutter thriller or any of the other movies that tend to haunt this type of theatre.

|Abandon Meat and embrace the goodness of your soy eating roots||True, these are Bay Area late nights, so midnight is considered awful late. These are some of the places i go when i just don't feel like sleeping.|
|I Want to encourage buisness to these little gems, mainly because they could use the extra revenue.||Rings of dough, deep fried to perfection.|
