This place does a legit cupcake- so their red velvet isn't that red or their cupcakes not at all round, it is still delicious! One of my favorite places for cupcakes in San Diego- local- unique flavors, and always helpful when I call. I wish they did a huge cupcake that I could bring to a birthday party that serves everyone. (I see this huge cupcake sometimes in my dreams :) If you ever do that Cupcake Squared, let me know. The favs= Not-So-Red Velvet, Chai, Almond, Carrot Cake.
I told you I would update- the birthday cake received a lot of love from the party. The Maple/Walnut/Buttercream cake tasted exactly like a pancake! I actually thought I wouldn't care for it much (because I don't really like maple-it was for the birthday boy) but even I enjoyed this. Peeps were asking about the "Pancake cake" the next day..
Ok I still love this place, but I want to hold of on the 5 star rating till I truly find the most perfect cupcake in the world. Still they have a great Red Velvet cake (which I had for my birthday!)! Oh, and do not compare it to that rift-raft Heavenly Cupcakes which is downtown. 2 different stores, and one is obviously better. :)
The Cupcake Whisperer gives you 4 Stars- Yay! I'm a fan. I've been here a few times (it started to get embarrassing when they started recognizing me so I backed off :-). My favorite- the Red Velvet (and around St Pattys they had a Chocolate one w/ Irish Cream frosting). The Red Velvet also comes in Gluten-free and Vegan. The not-so-good: the Strawberry cupcake. No thanks. Their other flavors are pretty legit- my dog liked the pup cake. If the line is around the corner I usually decide its not worth the wait. If you don't eat the cupcake STORE @ room temp (most cupcakes ask you to refrigerate). I made the mistake of putting it in the fridge once and it becomes hard and the top fell off (because of the massive amounts of butter in the mix). I don't think they are my favorite in San Diego- but they are up there. I'm always on the look out for the next big cupcake place.
I'm still on the search for the perfect cupcake place, but this place is pretty darn good if I'm in the Encinitas 'hood. They are located in a nursery (be sure to look out for it!) which gives it a unique flair. What I like: Red Velvet and Churro cupcake. What Was OK: Pistachio (aka Mustachio) cupcake, but props for the 'stache on the cupcake and the Elvis (more for the thrill factor). I need to go back and try more, don't worry yelpers- I put my waistline on the line everyday just for my reviews!
Dear Pubcakes, please open a store in another 'hood. I feel like you are going to get robbed in yours- or I am. That aside, I'm loving the blend of booze in cupcakes, everyone can put some Irish Cream in the icing but you go beyond that and spice it up with other alcohol deliciousness. I would like some more cupcake flavors to choose from (Actually I just checked your site-and you have added more flavors, you heard the cupcake whisperer!), but you have a good thing going so keep it coming. Favs: The Pumpkin and Beer for Breakfast (Bacon makes it happen!) I'd visit you more often but the drive is a pain in the butt..
Ok, I've been here a couple times and I'm ready to review. Check it out peeps:
* This is a made-to-order cupcakery. You need to call or email her to place your order, you can't walk-in (unless its her Saturday hours). However, I have emailed her on the day of and she had the cupcakes made for me by that afternoon.
* These are *not* the dense/heavy cupcakes of Sprinkles (which are still good). These cupcakes are light, airy, and I don't feel like I ate a stick of butter after eating them.
* Love the attention to detail- her cupcakes are cute and beautifully decorated.
* A bit tricky to find, she is located in a furniture gallery in the back (right next to Station Sushi).
* The owner is nice and helped me when I was lost trying to find the place (I was talking on my cellphone in the car- take that SDPD!).
* The ladies loved the ones I bought for our Happy Hour, high marks all around.
*She does GLUTEN FREE. (Chocolate and Yellow) I bought a chocolate one with cream cheese frosting for my Gluten-intolerant friend-- she loved it and now dreams of more cupcakes like these..
My favorite flavors: Red Velvet, Zebra Cupcake, her specialty Almond cupcake, and the birthday cake looking one (has rainbow sprinkles on top).
I am a fan, and this place has made my Best Cupcake places list! Good job, and yes I will "Have (More) Cake!"
