The Turf Club is in my old stomping ground of Golden Hill..
I used to live right down C street from it. We used to come here for drinks all the time.. the neighborhood and area have gotten nicer and safer as well. The place itself really hasn't changed too much.. maybe different managers or owners but nothing you'd really notice. The menu seems to be the same and the prices to boot (which is an added bonus in these tough times)!
I have to say.. my review won't be too much different from the ones already on here but I just wanted to put my spin on it I guess.
For me this place is great. It's cheap, it's in a great neighborhood, it is a total dive/hole in the wall type place (which is right up my alley), and it is filled with "cooler than you" type people who are always entertaining.. (I love to people watch and to just observe)..
I read something on one of the reviews that really nailed it.. Kristen G. put "STOP WATCHING YOUR STEAK COOK, SIT DOWN AND ENJOY YOUR BEVERAGE!!!".... So true.. I'm really.. How hard is it to drop it on the grill, throw on some salt/pepper or whatever and walk away.. It's not going anywhere, just come back, flip it and get on with things...
Overall this is a neighborhood type place for laid back people.. It's cheap, decent food, and has a great vibe.. for me that is pretty much all I need.. but for the love of God stop hovering around the grill and my seat which happens to be right next to it....
I have been to the Red Fox Lounge a few times while I was visiting a friend in San Clemente and every time I have fun.
The first reason I like the place is because of the atmosphere that comes with the Red Fox.. it has that little hole in the wall dive bar appeal that I love.
The second reason are the bartenders... they are always on point, don't put up with bullshit (see reason numbers 3 and 4), and they are almost always funny as hell.
The third reason is because it is NOT filled with Marines like every other bar around there (which I love).
The fourth reason is because it is NOT filled with rich fucks like the most of the bars and restaurants around the area.
The fifth and final reason is because it is just a local folks, regular Joe, down to earth place, and you can meet some funny ass people in there.
I recently came back to San Clemente to have a little getaway with my GF and we went to have breakfast at Antoine's next door and had to wait for a while so we decided to grab a drink.. It was around 10 in the morning and that place was already half full.. we had a drink, a few laughs, and enjoyed every minute of it..
Can't wait to go back....
I was going through the Reader looking for shows and I stumbled upon one at the Soda Bar.
My wife and I had never been to the Soda Bar before and thought we'd check it out. Once we found it (which was really easy) we found a parking spot a couple of blocks away. The door man was nice, check our ID's and talked with us for a bit and then we headed in. We paid the $10 cover for the show and then headed to the bar. the bar is very cool. It is in the middle of the room like an island with elevated booths along the wall, a pool table at the end of the room, and very small stage.
The bartenders were fast, with heavy hands and didn't have that "Fuck you I'm a bartender" attitude you get at other places.
"The bathroom was one of the funkiest bathrooms I've ever been in"... it smelled funky and the lights were dim.. the toilet in the stall actually moved if you were unfortunate enough to have to sit down on it and it is just plain old funky.. I even had a guy tell me as we were both walking out.. "man that is the funkiest little bathroom I've ever been in"... LOL.. loved it!
As for the show, it was amazing.. come check this place out. It's a lot of fun. I'm now a big fan of the Soda Bar and plan of going back!
LOVE THIS PLACE!
My wife worked right around the corner from Caps.. One day I was a little early to pick her up so I took a walk and stumbled upon Caps on my time killing journey. I didn't go in but mentioned to her we should check it out after work one day for happy hour.
I am sooooooooooooooooooo glad we did. They have $3 wells and $2 drafts.. you heard it right plus they have an amazing menu. The bartender was a really nice guy and made sure to make you feel welcome and took care of us the entire time.
We asked the bartender for a couple of recommendations on the food and he suggested a couple of things. We ordered the food and loved it.
We went back once or twice a couple times a week and had a blast every time. Unfortunately my wife found a better job and it is nowhere near Caps. I miss it already.
Now I'm thinking I need to make a trip... Happy Hour here I come!
Ye Olde Drunkin Bastards!
The Wife and I were doing some day drinking on a Saturday afternoon.. we stopped by Mickie's but weren't feeling the vibe at all so I thought let's hit up the Olde Plank! It's been a minute.. always full of characters.. let's go!
So we walked in and it was dead silent.. I mean dead silent! "Somebody die?".... everybody just looked at me and said nothing until one guys said "not yet!".. lol.. was this a threat? LOL..
The wife ordered a Guiness and I ordered a Shocktop and then it in a matter a minutes the fun began! We stopped in for "A" beer and didn't leave for a few hours! One of the "locals" took a liking to us and spent the rest of the time telling us stories and jokes.. and even bought us a couple of beers!
The wife and I had a blast.. the bartender was very cool and laid back, the locals were all friendly, the beers were good, and all the peanuts you can eat.. and the patio.. one of the best.. it's huge!
Even with the puke in the mens room I'm still giving 5 stars! Hey after all it's a dive bar! Set the bar low and you'll have a blast!
So an old friend of mine from way back was in town from Boston and I wanted to find a bar in Chula Vista since that is where he was staying and that is where I live. I don't go out to bars in Chula Vista since I don't drink too much anymore and that I like beer bars and whiskey bars.. but I am also a big fan of dive bars and that is exactly where Mr. D's falls in.
So I yelped bars in Chula Vista and Mr. D's is one of only a few that came up.. the rest were like Taco Bars and stuff like that .. made me laugh at the time. Anyways I read the reviews and thought it was perfectly located and sounded good so we hit it up.
There were two bartenders behind the bar, I think one was new or just bad at her job, the other one seemed to have to help her quite a bit. At one point she even spilled a beer on my friend.. LOL! Yeah no tip that time!
We ordered drinks, hid in the corner and just shot the shit while a group of ladies danced and screamed all night while their men held down the bar. Very funny.
This place is a total dive but if that is cool with you like it is with me then you'll like it. Couple of pointers.. Cash only and Tecate $2 Tuesday!
The wife and I decided to do a little day drinking one Saturday afternoon and we found Mickies and wondered in for a drink. It was pretty small and pretty empty. Couple of the "locals" just starred and starred until we moved lol! Creepy!
We were both craving a red beer.. I ordered two with Dos Ex's and the bartender brought the bottles over and asked "what was that red thing you wanted?" I explained what they were and she just looked puzzled so we just decided to play it safe and drink the bottles..
We also ordered a basket of fries.. ate em.. drank the beers and headed onward!
Nothing special about this place.. just another hole in the hole in the wall.. (it's a deep hole).....
