I liked Mizu and would like to come back. The location is pretty random, but it is a gem.
Some things that were disappointing
- bartender was out of one drink on the menu!
- DYNAMITE ROLL Chopped Tuna, Yellow Tail with Wasabi Mayo and Sesame Seed mine didn't come with sesame seeds, and besides that it was completely bland and awful. Wasabi Mayo- non existent. After it came, the waitress then decided to tell us that was one of her least favorites
- the booth was a very long rectangle, hard to have a conversation if you are on an end
- HOT MANGO ROLL
Spicy Tuna Topped with Yellow Tail, Mango, Unagi and Mango Sauce
- Free miso soup
- Drinking sapporo / sake bomb
- Cucumber salad
- reasonable prices for rolls
6 Stars. If only I could.
The service at I love Sushi is phenomenal. The owner himself comes around to all the tables while he is there to personally make sure your food is fine and maybe take a sake bomb with you (beat his amazing record and he'll give you more free stuff).
Speaking of free stuff, upon arrival to the restaurant, you are served with free edimame, cucumber salad, miso soup, california roll (i think), and a side of some fried calamari. All great quality.
The special rolls are totally worth the price. I enjoyed the Jenny Love roll this past time I visited, but have never been let down by anything I have ordered in the past.
I love Sushi is great for big groups/ parties. The sake and beer flow all night and you get a free roll with a candle on your birthday, not to mention a cool shirt! Also, karaoke is fun to sing, especially after youve been drinkin :)
Best sushi experience (food, service, etc.) in all of Santa Cruz and perhaps the bay area. Highly recommended.
Service: phenomenal. They wait on you hand and foot, extremely attentive with refills, bread, courses, etc...
Food: like eating pieces of heaven. I am not big on seafood, but when i come here that all changes. the crudo is incredible, ceviche is light but flavorful, and the filet is juicy melt in your mouth like butter (medium rare of course). everything is extremely fresh (caught or picked that same day)
Ambiance: Romantic, classy, upscale, yet friendly, easy going and fun. they did a great job of combining all of these themes.
my guilty pleasure: amuse bouche
Parking: i messed up when I came here. There is a pay lot conveniently behind the restaurant ($1/hr), but the meters stop at 9 PM. of course i paid until 11PM. D'OH ;)
This place was so good. walking in, you feel like you are in a huge sushi palace/ japanese museum hybrid. there are really awesome artifacts on display and i love the art. there are also lots of TVs.
Sushi was excellent. ordered the cherry roll and natural bridge roll (both specialty).
i wouldn't pay $5 for edemame though, unless it has some cool garlic...
free miso soup with your order.
the staff is extremely friendly and our waitress was attentive.
for a mid-week night, there was no wait in this giant restaurant. highly recommended!
The veggie burrito is overpriced, so i ended up getting a shredded chicken burrito. I wish there was more guac inside.
the service is extremely friendly and there is plenty of parking. there are 2 TVs to watch the sports games if you're into that.
my boyfriend got the ahi tuna chimichanga and had a mexi orgasm
I liked the old location, but I am LOVING the new location!!! its so huge! they have parking spots for "fuel efficient cars" and "carpool only". oh santa cruz.... so good!
the area you walk into first is the produce/ garden area with a cafe and lots of seating. imo, grocery stores are the best restaurants. i've had the sushi here and that is so good.
i really like the dedicated "raw food" section with kombucha and other living organism foods. the hot foods are expensive, so be careful how much you take, or you will be in for an unpleasant surprise at the register.
minus 1 star for the prices, but you get the quality you pay for. now if only healthy food could be more affordable. i do enjoy the sales at staff of life though.
I was really not impressed with this place :(
I wanted a roll that wasnt fried, didnt contain shellfish, and was spicy. apparently that was not gunna happen. I tried to substitute spicy tuna for regular tuna in the perfect roll, but i guess they dont allow that.
I got the lazy tuna, which had cooked tuna and the whole roll was fried. ugh i was such an unhappy sushi.
overall the ambiance was nice and the quality was good. i just didnt vibe with it.
For some reason, google maps thought Sushi E was on the other side of the street... but thanks to yelp i knew to find it by safeway :).
For an appetizer, we ordered the tempura, which was your ordinary tempura with shrimp, potato, onion, yams?? I ordered the rose garden roll (I cant remember the whole name of it), but it was soooo yummy. Also, I cant remember what my friend ordered :( but it was on the fusion section. We were both served hot tea and cold water upon sitting down.
The service was so amazing! It was a Tuesday night so I called to ask what time the restaurant closed. The woman on the phone insisted on making a reservation so I assumed it was going to be a busy night. When we got there, we noticed the restaurant was small but there were plenty of open places to sit.
After dinner, we were served a half orange to eat that was perfectly cut and had a toothpick in it for eating (see picture). Perfect ending to perfect sushi!
Totoro is a really fun place to go for sushi! Between the free miso soup and the great chefs, it really cannot be a bad experience. The restaurant is COVERED in Polaroids. It's fun to look at all of them while waiting for your food.
There are a couple of negatives that come to mind. The restaurant is tiny, so if you come on a crowded night, be prepared to wait. Parking is not the easiest here, but if you follow the lot around to the back, you may have better luck. Another low point is that the menu is extremely limited and I rarely order anything new.
The Spicy tuna roll is always a classic here. Although there aren't many choices, the quality of everything is superb. I do not eat shell fish so that also contributes to the limited aspect of the menu.
I never come here with more than 4 people. I would think if you have a larger party you should make a reservation, otherwise you could be waiting for a long time!
Nice location! I went with two gfs and we were full after a total of 3 rolls, 1 cold sake, 1 large sapporo, and lots of ginger. This restaurant is upstairs- take the escalator.
The outside seating is perfect on a hot day.
Prices are average to high.
Take me under the sea! the inside decor is so fun!
I ordered the sashimi for appetizer and filet for dinner. The steak came with roasted garlic cloves with a hash brown type potato. i often relive this meal in my head.
only complaint is the noise level on a saturday night. very hard to hear anyone!
Dessert: Made in house: Mint chocolate chip ice cream + brownie was amazing. It was like eating fresh mint leaves. If you want to just indulge, come here for dessert only. you won't be disappointed!
Cutest restaurant ever - and great date spot. The restaurant is tapas style with tons of Cali paraphernalia all over the place. Great selection of beers on tap.
We ordered the olives, pasta, and Lauganitas IPA beer battered fish and chips (we substituted the fries for salad no prob).
The manager was extremely nice and friendly, and even came and bussed our table! I really appreciate it when managers are not "above the dirty work".
The only down side to this restaurant is I could see the menu getting old if they don't change it often. There were not that many choices.
Parking: There is a lot across the street that said would charge $6, but I never had to pay (it was after 8PM)
Best sushi experience ever! I arrived with two other people at 6:30 PM on a tuesday. We were seated immediately and ordered a miso soup, cucumber salad, and garlic edemame (highly recommended).
We also ordered 3 rolls, which came out almost at the same time as our appetizers. Fastest service! the red dragon roll was perfect, crunchy roll was also great - and slightly out of my comfort zone. overall a great experience.
The gift that keeps on giving: if all the above didn't convince you, the 3 appetizers and 3 rolls made me full without being stuffed. Splitting the check 3 ways only cost $11 !! W-O-W!!!!
Not sure about all the good reviews for this place, but I definitely will not be coming back here.
My dad was in town visiting, and my favorite sushi place was closed, so we decided to try this one. We were seated fairly quickly, and fairly close to the table next to us. Granted, the restaurant is extremely tiny, so we understood and do not count this against them. Get to know thy neighbor, right?
After we sat down, it was all downhill. It took 10 minutes to order edamame and a roll which came an unbearable amount of time later. I did appreciate the complimentary soup and salad. I asked for a water 3 or 4 times before I finally got a water ~15 minutes later. The music was techno pop, not what I was in the mood for on a Sunday night. The food was eh. was not worth the wait or the hype at all.
Between the service (lack of water, time to order, time to receive food, and just general ignorance of customers), music, and size of establishment, I will not be returning here.
I love this whole foods. I eat dinner here a lot at the tables in the front or outside. The hot bar is nice, and they just finished renovating! Whole foods has a bad rep for being expensive, but they really have some great things. Coming here always makes me happy.
Came on a Friday night, and there were a couple of other diners in the restaurant. The service was friendly and prompt. Prices were reasonable and portions were large.
I really appreciated PBS playing on the TVs in the restaurant.
The decor is a little tacky but I find that charming.
We ordered a 2 roll combo which came with Miso soup. I was impressed with the quality.
Order the roll with mango in it, you will not be disappointed.
Came here for dinner on a Saturday night:
-$3 sake bombs (using corona! haha)
Started with a crab roll
Ordered edemame which was nice and not too salty
Got the 2 person sushi dinner which was big enough for 4 people. Came with 2 miso soups and 2 salads. Definitely enough food!
I valet parked for $4 which was definitely worth it. Overall, the price per person was about $25 including the drinks!
I was in town on business, and I met some coworkers here for dinner. The happy hour menu is extensive! I ordered a sangria, which was delicious!
Normally, I don't eat seafood, but we did dinner tapas style with all of the happy hour options. We got 3 different types of muscles which were all wonderful.
The sangria was very tasty, if I weren't here on work I would have definitely had more!
All the food was amazing!
I came here on a Friday night and sat at the bar area with a gf. The self seating amount is plentiful! Service was good.
In the bar area, you have access to the sushi menu and cocktails. We each ordered a roll and seaweed salad to share. I would definitely come back for the food.
The reason for the negative stars is because the band was way too loud. It was only about 6:30 and I couldn't even have a conversation without shouting. I do appreciate live music, but I dont think that volume is necessary until a little later in the evening.
All I have to say is try the horseradish vodka oyster shot. you will not regret it.
The bartender was really nice and I had a great time. It was only my second time eating oysters, and the vodka helps mucho.
Also they have deep eddy, which is my absolute (no pun intended) favorite
