After so many months after first stepping into this shop, I can say it's better than I could have ever imagined. They do have a very extensive wine selection and are more than willing to come up with recommendations based upon budget and/or preferences. They also have tastings during the week that allow you to sample wine and spirits from the various regions, types and styles of the world. I can say that as a novice to wine, it is very easy to be intimidated as well as overwhelmed. However, every time I have come here, I have been helped and/or had my various questions answered in a greater level of detail than I could have thought possible. It's worthy of note that I oftentimes come in seemingly under dressed, such as wearing gym clothes or other extremely casual wear and this hasn't changed their reaction to me one bit. I have noticed that I am treated differently at restaurants and businesses simply based upon what I wear and I can happily say that K&L does not engage in such practices.
For those who like to experience new wines without having to step into the store, they also have various wine clubs and well as a personal sommelier service so that you can have customized selection based upon your own preferences and/or budget.
I can easily say that I am glad I found K&L and will most certainly return in the future.
I've been back to Icing on the Cake numerous times since my last review, and I can easily say I really do enjoy the goods from this bakery. I still really like the carrot cake. It is still moist, nutty with great carrot flavor. The lack of carrot flavor and texture is my complaint with most carrot cakes and I can easy say that the carrot cake at Icing on the Cake does not fall into this trap. While it's not crunchy like a raw carrot would be, you can still easily tell that it was actually made from carrot as opposed to it being simply a carrot flavored cake that you might find from cake mixes or other bakeries. I also enjoy their Banana Walnut Chocolate Chip and Pumpkin Loaf cakes. They have great flavor and are great alternatives when I want something other than my standard carrot cake. However, I did get a small carrot cake from them for my birthday and it was divine.
Even though I've been back multiple times, it seems that almost every time I visit I find something new that I want to try. That said, I'm always as indecisive as ever, but despite that, the people who work here are polite and never give me any pressure to make up my mind. All in all, Icing on the Cake is a gem of a place in the city of cats and an asset to the area.
I just had dinner here last night and it was a delightful experience. We ordered the Carolina Pulled Pork Sliders, the Mushroom Empanadas, the Duck Tostaditos and the Artisan Cheese plate.
Everything was pretty good, The slilders were flavorful with a pinot based sauce that complemented the meat very well. The empanadas were also very tasty, although I do think they could have been a bit hotter, but still great nonetheless. The comparative low light was the ducvk. While it was ok, it just seemed not up to par with the other offers ordered. It wasn't bad, but it was fairly plain and just seemed like a roast duck on a large tortilla chip that was dressed up a bit.. I don't think I'd get it again. My favorite dish was the cheese plate. All of the cheese varieties were great and the plate accompaniments went perfect.. I think I would come back for the cheese plate alone. I also ordered a glass of the sparkling rose that they had for happy hour. It was pretty unspectacular.
Service was great. We were attended to often and promptly, despite the fact that it was pretty busy.
I would definitely come here again.
Being that yesterday was Mother's Day, I went to La Fondue to celebrate. This is a great spot for celebrations, occasions or expensive dates.
We ordered the Fondue Feast combination, which comes with a salad course in addition to the entree, cheese and chocolate fondues. The meal begins with the salad course which gives you a choice of a chef's salad or a spinach salad. We each elected for the chef's salad. Given that it was only the beginning of the meal, we each ended up having the rest of our salads to go. Then came the cheese course. For the cheese course we chose the Schweitz. In the past we usually have elected to go with the Cajun, but for tonight we decided to branch out a little bit. The cheese was very good, although it was a bit bitter and that the alcohol flavor ended up being a bit strong. We also did joke a little bit that it was almost possible to get drunk off the cheese course without ordering any alcoholic beverages. One of the great things about the cheese and chocolate fondue courses is that you can have unlimited refills of the included accompaniments. I really enjoyed their bread along with their pearl onions.
For our entree our meat choices were Savage Duck, Bronze Turkey, Alligator Tail, Free Range Buffalo, Wild Antelope and Wild Boar. For our cooking method we ended up choose the lobster bisque. The broth was fairly light, but flavorful and ended up imparting good flavor to each of the meats to a point where. in some cases, the dipping sauces were unnecessary. Each meat was very good, which was well accompanied by each the 6 dipping sauces that were provided.
The chocolate fondue came last and for that we chose the decadent one. It was fantastic and I especially enjoyed the Snicker's Bars, the cookie dough as well as the marscapone choose balls.
With respect to the service, it could have been better, but in their defense they were relatively busy. While our water glasses were constantly topped off, it was a bit of a wait to get out refills for our cheese and chocolate fonfues to the point where our chocolate fondue was turned off, as we had immediately paid the check before actually completing the meal.
All in all, while La Fondue is pricey, it is a fun experience and I would gladly return.
I had a craving for gelato and after hearing this place recommended by a friend, I had to check it out. I had the Chocolate Liqueur and the Pistachio and it was great. The gelato was smooth, creamy, but not too sweet. It also had that density that gelato is known for, as compared to ice cream. It was almost like having a regular sized entree and I only had their smallest size. As mentioned, while their selection is limited, this is a great illustration for quality over quantity.
The service here was great. The woman working behind the counter was very accommodating of my typical indecisiveness. One thing that I did find a bit odd was that in the mornings, which is run by the owner, they don't seem to accept credit card, but in the afternoon, which I was told was operated by a different party, that credit cards were accepted.
All in all this a great little shop for Los Gatos. Between Dolce Spazio and Icing on the Cake, Los Gatos definitely has most of my dessert cravings covered. I will definitely be back.
This place is wonderful. I ordered a Royal Flush for dinner tonight and it was fantastic. The crust was perfectly cooked, the toppings plentiful and fresh and the sauce was perfectly proportioned. The freshness of the ingredients is a marked difference from chains like Pizza Hut. It was also not as overtly oily as I was expecting. It is a marked difference than when I usually eat pizza, which is that I almost always want to take a shower afterwards or at least give my face and neck a good scrubbing. While it's not healthy food by any means, it's good to know that I'm not seemingly eating a vat of oil with every slice.
The only complaint that I have is that they should probably hire more people, atleast for rush periods. While I understand they are a small business, it would seem that adding another person would make the whole process much smoother. However, I'm glad to say that despite this the quality of the food does not suffer.
I will definitely be back in the future.
A fantastic experience.
My parents and I went to dinner here last night and had a fantastic experience. Alexander's Steakhouse has a modern flair on the traditional steakhouse ambiance, which is seemingly solemn and boring.
For my dinner, I had the hamachi shots (shared among the table), seared foie gras (shared among the table), the asparagus salad and the 2+ pound rib eye. The hamachi shots seemed pretty mediocre, although the combination of flavors was pretty good. It seemed rather gimmicky, something to be done once and never again. We also shared truffle fries and a side of asparagus among the three of us. Our desserts were the carrot cake and the raspberry souffle.
The asparagus salad was fairly nice. Simple and clean, but tasty nonetheless. The foie gras was flavorful and very smooth. The rib eye was a really good piece of meat, Very tender and flavorful and the sauce paired fantastically with it. I ordered mine rare and it is refreshing to see a steakhouse prepare a proper rare steak, instead of something more medium rare or worse. The 2 sides were also quite nice. The truffles fries were great and really didn't needs the sauce that was provided, although I did use it. The asparagus was also fairly solid, but not otherwise spectacular or notable. The carrot cake tempura was decent, maybe I was expecting more, but it was fairly underwhelming and average at best. My father commented that it was like a differently flavored french toast. While I don't necessarily agree with that description, it was not that spectacular and I do not believe I would order it again. The provided ice cream was very nice. The raspberry souffle was light and flavorful, definitely a good way to close out our meal. They also provided a slice of chocolate brownie/cake as well as sparkling wine as we were celebrating a birthday. They were decent, but not otherwise notable.
my father commented during the meal that it seems that one of the delineating characteristics between fine dining and casual dining is the level of service at fine dining establishments. Alexander's Steakhouse really exemplifies this quite well. Our waitresses were very attentive to our needs and made sure our meal was satisfactory at various parts of the night. Yet they were not intrusive, or on the other hand non existent. A definite asset to the establishment and and enhancement to our meal.
In short I had a fantastic experience and would definitely put Alexander's on the the shortlist for a special occasion or for just a really fantastic meal. That said, it is a fairly large amount of money to spend, but I've definitely paid more for less.
I stopped by this afternoon for a sweet snack and decided to try this place out. I had the vanilla and chocolate malt custards as well as their pistachio frozen yogurt in the 5 oz size. All of them were really good. I am usually a fan of custard, but i did really like the frozen yogurt as well and I think it would be worth a return visit just for that, in addition to the custards.
The service was very good, although not busy at all for a Friday afternoon. I would definitely return in the future.
I had dinner here and had an excellent experience. I had the Seared Scallop Trio to begin; the
Maple-Glazed California Duck Breast & Confit of Thigh as my entree and the Pineapple Upside Down cake as the dessert. All the courses were beautifully presented. Each of the scallops were flavorful, but not overpowering. The duck was simply brilliant. It was flavorful, but not too when I have had duck.fatty or salty, which is oftentimes, what has happened when I have had duck in the past. The dessert was fairly light but flavorful and not too sweet.
The service was also quite nice. They were attentive, making sure that we were attended to, but not to the point of being intrusive. The Fess Parker Syrah that they recommended was an excellent complement to the food. I will definitely come back here if I am ever back in Santa Barbara.
While it isn't a formal chocolate shop they do carry a fairly good slection of botique chocolate bars. They also host tastings, so it's also informative. The proprietors are knowledgeable and friendly. They seem to have good relationships witth some botique chocolate makers so they can get some exclusives, but do offer some bars that are also offered in regular retail chains. The chocolates are definitely priced as such, but for the quality are a fairly good value.
They're definitely a gem.
