Since losing weight, I've been obsessed with getting a tight, lean and sculpted physique like a surfer or a yogi. I've always admired swimmers bodies, so I've been doing a lot of tightening exercises. Now first of all, I've always been an adventurous person. The first of my friends to try something new, to travel by myself to strange places and even take on 30 day challenges. Surfing, the ultimate rush-inducer, seemed like a natural next challenge for me, but I am not a good swimmer. Plus I live in Phoenix, the land of lithe, spandex-clad spinning addicts--no surf boys here. I know...I know...excuses....excuses! I can go to Hawaii with my flight benefits, and I can always learn how to swim. However, getting on a plane just to learn how to surf seems like more work for me.
So when I saw the Groupon for SurfSet, a new indoor surfing class for landlubbing Phoenicians, I jumped at the chance to try it. All I can say is I'm not disappointed.
The exercises which weaves in Yoga and Pilates along with surf moves really work on your core to give you that lean, flat stomach. It's also great for muscle building and balance. I was sweating like crazy, and my arms were sore! I loved it, but don't expect this place to be a huge gym because it's not. It's a small studio, but with great instructors. That's a great thing! The classes are more intimate. Another positive: You can buy Shakeology here! My protein shake of choice! :)
I finally found the perfect gym for me. This fitness center is very inexpensive and near my place. I could ride my bike here, and do my weights in the facility. Signing up was a breeze, and since they are a green company. They send your contract to your email. I signed up for the $10 a month membership because I travel for a living. I don't get to use this gym all the time, so I didn't want to waste my money. I don't really need the fancy classes, and higher membership fees at other fitness centers because of my busy schedule.
Although it's not the biggest, and best gym in the valley (no pool, no spa, no sauna etc) , their use of space is impressive. I am also pretty happy with their state of the art equipment. You can connect your Ipod to the machines, and use their free wi-fi. I use Pandora and Live 365 when I work out, so having the free wi-fi is a big plus for me.
So if you are not high maintenance, want to save money and do not need all the extra amenities that the other gyms offer. Then this fitness center is for you.
One of the perks of staying at a hotel is sometimes the hotel give away free passes to fitness centers.
When I'm staying at the Crowne Plaza in Philly, this is where I work out. The fitness center has modern equipment and enjoyable classes.
Staff is professional, and the facility is remarkably clean. They seem to have some of the most up to date equipment like the elliptical machines with Ipod holders and TVs.
I love nature, and I love hiking. My friends and I hiked the "Sleeping Giant" aka Nou Nou trail yesterday morning and had a lot of fun.
It took us about 6 miles and 5 hours round trip to do the whole trail because we started the hike from the hotel.
If anyone wants to try this trail the hike is about 2 miles long from the parking lot, and it is totally worth it!
When you reach the top, you will love the breath taking views of the coastal areas of Kapa'a, Makahela Mountain, and Mt. Wai'ale'ale.
It is a fairly easy hike if the person is in decent shape, but there are parts of the trail that are not suitable for the inexperienced. I also do not recommend bringing little children.
I tripped a few times, and it could be dangerous when it is wet and muddy.
I would only suggest going on a dry day and only if you are confident.
It was nice and breezy yesterday, so it was the perfect day for hiking.
On our way to the top, we picked some strawberry guavas from the trees. They were tart, sweet and quite edible.
There's a lovely little picnic area near the top, but be careful if you want to go up to the "chin."
I took a picture of a guy standing on top of it (see my photos). We went up there and checked out the view. Totally spectacular and I have never felt more at peace.
However, it is a little scary if you are bothered by heights. We stood near the ledge which I do not recommend because it is too dangerous.
If anyone wants to try this hike, be sure to prepare yourself. Pack a little plastic bag if you plan on bringing your camera. The weather in Lihue is unpredictable, so it does not get wet in case it rains.
Also, pack you gear, a bottled water and a little snack in case you get hungry.
My friend Sage and I took a nature walk at Dreamy Draw last week after the death of our dear friend Nicholas.
We decided to hike here and reflect, and this place was the perfect place for it. There's something about nature that is very therapeutic. The passing of our friend was definitely life altering, but it really made us think about our existence.
Sometimes, the things that we can't change really end up changing us.
Hiking and reflecting here was very healing, during our challenging days and significant loss of our friend, the ever-present power of nature was there for our healing and regeneration.
While strolling at one of the trails, it gave me an opportunity to think deeply.
We are only here on earth for a very short time, maybe 100 years at the very most. During that time, we must try to do something benevolent, something good and proactive with our lives because life can be cut short at any time.
New York is like a second home to me since I visit every month. I love walking to Central Park to admire the stunning beauty of this amazing sanctuary. I'm such an ardent fan of the place that I try to come here as often as I can. It is a pleasant retreat from all the noise and hustle and bustle of the city. It is most certainly a peaceful haven of tranquility.
I have done yoga here in the summer, made snow angels in the winter, had picnic in the spring and read a book under a tree in autumn. Of course, anyone can do other things such as ice skate at Wollman rink, play a free game at the Chess & Checker house, take a romantic stroll with your sweetie, visit the statue of Alice & Wonderland, pay your respect at strawberry fields and even visit Belvedere castle in the middle of the park. The park is so massive, and the perfect place to wander around, get lost and take in the breathtaking views. It is certainly the perfect oasis for meditation and reflection since you are so close to nature. It is so spiritual. I love it.
Piece of cake. I thought this hike would be tough and it was actually pretty easy. I could see how this could be hard for some people though. The 99 steps leading to the top is very steep and there's no way you could stop once you start climbing it.
Some chick even made a smart ass remark when my friend Eric took a picture of me. She said that "He's a better door than a window". Ha Ha.
We started hiking at around 9:30 this morning and then it started raining, so we had to stop a few times. Then once it stopped raining, we would hike again. It was also windy and refreshing, so the climb wasn't bad at all. It was a winding pathway that makes it easier to climb. This is definitely a fun exercise to do on Waikiki if you are looking for some cheap outdoor activity.
Warning: If you are going to use this gym, be sure to bring:
1. Your own towels
3. Your own bottled water
4. Toilet Seat Covers
5. Flip Flops.
They don't provide them.
Although they have good work out equipment, this place is not recommended if you are concerned about cleanliness. The gym is very old and outdated.
When I went to use the bathroom, I was seriously grossed out when I saw the condition. I didn't even bother taking a shower here because I thought it was quite unclean and I didn't bring my flip-flops.
Despite my unpleasant encounter, I am giving them 3 stars for a helpful staff member and good music. Plus I had an awesome work out session, so there!
You better work!
I used to work out at Cheetah Gym when my best friend Sage used to live in Chicago. I used to stay with him whenever I get a Chicago layover. He had a membership here, and since he could bring a guest, I was able to get in for free! He used to live in Andersonville, so it was conveniently located near his house. It's a bitch to find parking though, but they have nice facility, and great equipment! lol
This rating is for the gym only, so I can not rate the trainers. I do not like to rate anything lower than 4 stars, but I have to be honest with my review.
I've been to a lot of different fitness centers all over the states, and this one just does not cut it for me. The gym is just one room with very limited equipment. They do not provide towels, no classes and does not have a sauna or pool. I guess I'm spoiled since I've been to better fitness centers such as Gold's Elite and other high end gyms, so I guess my expectations were high.
