Yes, I have the palate of a 9 year old. Yes, i eat hot dogs at least once a week.
That said, I know my hot dogs, and Superdawg is one of the best. Seriously, where else in the Chicago metro area can you eat at a 50s style drive-in? You pull into a spot, flip the switch, place your order and within ten minutes your hotdogs are brought to you in cute little boxes.
An awesome place for a casual date or to take out-of-towners.
Be sure to try a milkshake...they are pretty amazing.
This is probably my favorite hot dog place in the city! I've been coming here since I was kid (i went to grammar school down the street) and it never gets old.
The dogs are great, the burgers pretty good, fries--perfect, and the shakes...well you have to try the shakes!
All in all, you really cannot get a Chicago dog better anywhere else. But yes, you must bring cash or else you'll be trotting across Belmont to the ATM.
My fiancé and I used to go to Hot Doug's when it was on the other side of the river on Roscoe and Western. We would go 3X a week for lunch when we were in high school. After the fire, we were incredibly disappointed because Hot Doug's seriously has some amazing dogs!
A few years ago however, I was back on break and randomly driving down California when I had discovered that Hot Doug's had risen from the ashes! Whenever i'm in the area I always try to stop in, especially for the duck fat fries--YUM!
The only bummer: be prepared to wait in uber-long lines. Hot Doug's has become quite the celebrity among chicago hot dog places. Not entirely worth the wait if you're just getting a chicago dog, but definitely worth it if you're going to try one of the specialty sausages and meats.
I come here when I'm craving a true Chicago dog and cannot get down to Murphy's in Lakeview. The food here is great, but a tad overpriced for a hot dog. Nonetheless, the dogs are pretty good and the fries..yum! Make sure to bring cash, because like most really great hot dog places in the city they don't take credit.
If you're looking for a true Chicago hot dog go elsewhere. But if you're looking for a good hot dog/polish/pizza puff/fries this is the best place to stop. I will warn you, it looks like a shack, but trust me I have been eating here since I was three years old and I still love coming back!
While it may just seem like a boiled Vienna in a regular bun, there's something about how they serve it--i just can't put my finger on it. Maybe its that the bun is so steamed that it sticks to the hot dogs, or how they roll it up with your fries so you always end up with fries in your dog. There is seriously nothing more satisfying than a red hot from Sam's on a cold, dreary day.
The fries are always perfectly crisp, and so are the pizza puffs. Seriously, if you're in the area and want a quick, cheap and yummy meal stop at Sam's. But remember it is a shack so be prepared to eat standing or in your car.
My fiancé grew up around the corner from this place and has been coming here since he was a kid. Naturally, whenever I was visiting him we always managed to find ourselves here. And now that i live in the neighborhood too, we're always here when we want good food quick.
Patio will never disappoint, and their menu has so much on it that you could seriously come here 3 times every week for a month and not get bored (but you just may need bigger pants).
I'm not a big fan of gyros but my fiancé claims they are the best he's ever eaten. I personally rotate between the chicago dog, chicken tender sandwich or the chicken pita-- and I always get a side of their spicy (cajun) fries (a must!). And don't forget to try their soups--they have a new one every day and they are all made from scratch. All of the chicken noode/rice soups are amazing!
FYI: closed sundays, cash only (but they do have an onsite ATM)
