Dare I say, one of my leading places to go for pizza??!! I'm completely hooked and so are my friends. Service is above and beyond, pizzas are flavorful, and they are just as good the next day as well.
It's similar to subway where you pick and choose exactly which type of toppings you'd like. I went for the make-your-own which came out to be around $8. I got olive oil, ricotta, mozzarella, chicken, bacon, pepperoni, black olives. Be sure to order the pesto at the register! They drizzle that on top after your pizza is out of the oven. My friends forgot so they asked for a side of pesto instead and they were more than generous to give us some among some other sauces (red sauce & BBQ). They recommend not to go overboard with the toppings or you'll end up with an undercooked pizza.
You really have to go here and experience this for yourself. What's not to like!
My bf has been raving about NY Giant Pizza for quite some time so I decided to drive to Mira Mesa to check this place out myself. They have their $3.50 special consisting of one 1-topping slice and a drink. But when I saw their White Pizza on the menu, I stopped and immediately wanted to try that instead. David and I got the 14'' White Pizza for $12.99 which came with fresh (and I mean really fresh) garlic, ricotta, basil, and mozzarella. Check-in for a free topping! We got black olives for our free topping, but thinking of trying the green olives next time per the owner's recommendations. He's fine with doing half green half black too.
20 minutes later our pizza came out, garlicky and all... just the way we like it! It was worth every minute of waiting because it was probably the best slice of pizza I've had in a really long time. Ever since my trip to NYC a year ago, I've been on the quest for a pizza place that can come close to the pizza I had there... this is THE place for NY style pizza in SD. Move over Luigi, I'm coming here from now on. The crust was thin and chewy, the mozzarella was stringy and flavorful, and the best part... the ricotta. They were very VERY generous with the ricotta and it melted in my mouth with every bite. They also have a TV so we requested the owner to turn to the Celtics-Knicks playoffs game. Nothing like good pizza, chilled soda, and a playoffs bball game on a hot Saturday afternoon.
It was my first night staying in NYC. We had just landed and checked into the hostel. What was the first thing we decided to do? Isn't the choice obvious? Get pizza of course!
Friendly service, wide selection of giant slices of pizzas, and prices aren't too bad ($3-5 depending on which type of pizza with which toppings). This was within walking distance. The area was pretty sketchy at night so don't go alone.
We went for the pesto pizza and ricotta pizza (see pics). The cheeses were melt-in-your-mouth-delicious and the crust was thin with the perfect texture. Every time I get pizza now, I think of Cafe Viva and no, there hasn't been anything similar to this in California =(
I knew I should have gone for another slice!
This is my go-to lunch spot when I need a quick break from work. And here are the reasons why:
1. Service and food comes out quick for those pressed for time
2. One slice is really about 3 slices in one and I'm always left with leftovers for later
3. Amazing price!
One slice of pepperoni pizza is only $3 and comes with its very own individual carry out box because it's simply too large to fit on a paper plate that you often get at other pizza joints. I feel like I'm carrying out a small pizza pie with that carry out box. Not only is the size outstanding, the pizza is really spectacular as well. The crust is nice and thin, the mozzarella is stringy, and there is just the right amount of sauce. I usually finish half my slice and save the rest for later because it is to much to finish in one sitting. All for $3!!
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING doesn't even begin to describe this place. Brings back memories of high school lunch breaks when my friends and I would venture across the street to buy a slice of cheese pizza for $1.70. Imagine a huge slice of thin crusted oogy gooey goodness with the right amount of tomato sauce and stringy cheese in your mouth. Yup, that's what I pretty much experienced every other day back in high school. It's tough but someone had to do it. Sometimes my brother and I would order a large pizza with black olives, pepperoni, and various other toppings and let me tell you, they never skimp out on their toppings! Huge slices with loads of toppings. I love it! I'm definitely taking my boyfriend here when we visit HB, I want him to experience the grandeur that is King's Pizza.
After being bookmarked for almost a year, I can proudly say that I dined at Pizzeria Luigi! We were greeted by a super friendly cashier who was patient with us as we were trying to narrow down which slices to pick. There were simply so many good ones on display. They have a deal that included 2 slices + drink for just $6. We ordered so many slices that I can't remember them all... sadly. But from the top of my head I remember ordering:
Mushroom and Ricotta
Sweet Sausage and Peppers
Spinach and Ricotta
Sausage and Ricotta
Every slice came out piping hot and had its own unique taste depending on the topping. The ricotta really made a huge difference with its rich and creamy texture. YUM! It's located in a sketchy part of town and it's street parking only... but it's worth the trip. The slices they offered here gave me that nostalgic feeling like I was back in NYC again. I love that feeling...I will definitely come back! By the way... cash only so come prepared!
I am SO GLAD my bf surprised me and took me here for a lunch. I've heard about this place for a long time now and had very high expectations. With that said, it was even better than I had expected! My only wish was that I had gone much MUCH sooner. All these years... wasted!
We went for a small mashed potatoes and bacon pizza. Yes, the rumors are true...the pizza is truly heavenly and huge too! A small is undoubtedly enough to feed 3-4 people. They also bring out a tray full of condiments in case you wanted to have it with your pizza such as dried oregano or parsley (I think), shredded parmesan cheese, and red pepper flakes. We came in the middle of the day at around 4pm and we were basically the only ones there so come at that time if you want to beat the crowds and noise.
I'm eyeing the clam pizza next. And chicken pesto. And gouda garlic alfredo.
I"m definitely a food fan of Basic. My friend had her birthday here so we had the bar at our disposal. I got to try the Basic Mojito, which was a combination of rum, mint, and lime. Very yummy but it wasn't enough! A couple of sips and it was all gone...
But on to the star of the show. Their pizza is simply mouthwatering. Yes, belief the hype. My bf and I had the pleasure of trying their "Mashed Pie" which is a white pizza with mashed potatoes (yes, you heard me... MASHED POTATOES) and bacon. I was skeptical at first at the combination, but was immediately blown away upon just sight alone. A small pie will cost around $13, but honestly it was not small at all. We had plenty left over for the next day. Forget your diet for one night and give this a go. The soft creamy texture of the mashed potatoes meshed well with the saltiness of the bacon and the crispy crust of the pizza itself. Be warned, parking is a nightmare. But we all know that when it comes to DTSD. It's definitely worth the trip! I would love to come back! A great bar atmosphere with friendly service and creative pizzas!
I had such high hopes before coming here and I think I may have set the bar too high because my experience here wasn't as great as my fellow yelpers. Came here for a late lunch and was already turned off by the heavy traffic on the 57. My boyfriend always told me that he LOVES deep dish pizza so I told him we should give this place a try since everyone else was raving about it. When my boyfriend and I finally arrived, first thing that my bf notices is all the Chicago sports decor. I can understand this but being a Patriots fan he was not pleased to see all the Bears posters. But what REALLY set him off was the Notre Dame poster inside being the die-hard USC fan that he is hehe.
Anyway, we decided to go for the small 10 inch olives, green peppers, and onions stuffed deep dish which was priced for $14.85+tax that totaled it to $18.05. We also wanted to order the pizza bread but was told that the sauce was a meat sauce. I don't eat red meat so we asked if we can have a non-meat sauce. They said they can use the marinara sauce (the same sauce they use in the pizza) but with an extra cost. I think that's a bit ridiculous. Shouldn't sauce with meat cost more? We decided to pass especially since they were only giving two pieces of bread sticks for like $5 and ordered the garlic bread instead. The garlic bread wasn't anything special. Just french bread slathered with garlic flavored butter on top. We added a whole bunch of parmesan on top to add more flavor. The server was really nice and helpful though and answered all of our questions.
The pizza finally came out after about 40 minutes. I would highly recommend calling in to order first because we were there forever! This table arrived 20 minutes after we did and got their pizza the same time we did. I really enjoyed my first slice but after that I couldn't handle it anymore. I love cheese but (I can't believe I'm saying this because I love cheese so much) it was a bit TOO cheesey so I got sick of my second piece. I was full for the rest of the day so I didn't even need a dinner. The tables were placed super close to each other so I felt like I had to speak in a low voice or else the whole place would hear my conversation. It was just a bit awkward sitting so close and hearing what my neighbors were talking about.
Best part of eating here was that I discovered I like deep dish pizza. Everything else about my experience here was MEH.
This is "the" pizzeria to go to! If you want NY style pizza without having to actually go to NY, well all you have to do is come here. I can't believe I never noticed Knockout Pizzeria. Every time I shop at Fresh&Easy, I pass by this establishment. Luckily, I saw Steve F.'s review and knew I had to try this place out.
You can order by the slice or an entire pie. I went for a nicely thin slice of spinach, garlic, & ricotta pizza for just $2.75. YUM! Every bite left me lusting for more! I also really recommend their garlic knots, which are bready knots bedazzled with a buttery & garlicky flavor with a sprinkle of parm on top ($3.25). Comes with a marinara dipping sauce which really adds to the flavor and pizzazz.
I am definitely coming back for more. Another plus was the fact that their dining tables are maps of NY! I'm going to NY this Friday. Perfect if you ask me... and what a coincidence!
I saw a huge sign outside that said "LUNCH SPECIAL: $5 Medium 1-Topping Pizza" and I was immediately drawn in. I've lived so close to Georgio's Pizza for the longest time and never really noticed it or stopped by. They had a huge poster inside of their other lunch specials, all of which I am interested in. The man working there (I'm not sure if he was the owner) looked really grumpy the entire time and didn't smile once while I was waiting. Anyway, my pizza was ready after 10 minutes and I took it home. The store itself was tiny and didn't look like a pleasant place to eat. Upon opening my box, first thing I noticed was how skimpy the amount of black olives was and how I saw a whole lot of tomato sauce but not very much mozzarella. Anyway, I enjoyed my pizza anyway because I was starving and the crust was thin and soft.
1. Amazing lunch deals! 11am-4pm, you can get various deals such as an 8inch sub + small drink for $5 or a 1 topping medium pizza also for $5. If you want to go by the slice, you can get two slices of cheese + small drink for $2.99 + tax.
2. Some of their other pizzas sounded really gooood! I'm really interested in the Athena (olives, eggplant, feta cheese, pesto sauce) and the Creamy Chicken (chicken, garlic, zucchini, bacon bits, alfredo sauce)
3. They also have a new item called "Pizza Bread", which is like bread sticks but you get a choice of up to 2 toppings. ($3.99)
1. It's not exactly a dine-in place. There are 3 small tables. It's more take-out appropriate or you can choose to have your food delivered for an extra charge.
2. Barely any cheese and toppings on my lunch deal.
3. Service was alright - not very friendly or possibly he was having a bad day.
I love Dino's Pizza! They definitely fit that image of "the pizza joint", with fast service, friendly people, and the smell of pizza baking in the oven looming all throughout the restaurant. Their crust here is absolutely amazing (soft, slightly buttery, thin style) and they do not skimp out on their toppings. Their prices are slightly less expensive compared to other pizza places that I've run into.
Things I recommend:
Mozzarella Sticks - ooey gooey, with a crunchy outer layer and comes with a really good dipping sauce to compliment it.
Dino's Deluxe Pizza - comes with a huge mess of toppings. It's almost like their "supreme pizza" where they load a bunch of selected toppings into one giant heaping pizza. I can't remember all the toppings from the top of my head but I remember pepperoni, Canadian bacon, mushrooms, black olives, onions, anchovies. If you don't like a certain topping you can always request for them to leave it out.
Turkey & cheese sandwich (or any of their sandwiches for that matter) - came to me in the size of my forearm! All for around $7 including tax.
I've always received friendly service here whether I came in a huge group for my best friend's birthday or just my mom and I coming in for a sweet little mother-daughter lunch.
Mmm who doesn't love garlic? My bf and I came here to cap off our date and we were so glad we did. The menu just had so many appealing choices, but somehow we managed to keep our voracious appetites tamed and decided on the following:
1. Vampire Killer: there's a reason why this dish is so popular! Bold flavors, addicting to one's palette, and just simply not enough...
2. Shrimp and mayo pizza: this was my favorite thing of the night! I still remember my first bite. It was a combination of a wild garlicky explosion and soft, delicate flavors of shrimp all in one bite. Loved it! The garlic wasn't overpowering and I was still able to enjoy the mayo and shrimp tag team.
3. Al Allijo with Chicken: the garlic & olive oil dipping sauce went well with the crunchy baguette. However, the chicken was a tad on the overcooked side.
Service was a bit slow, but we wanted to take our time and enjoy our dinner so it wasn't a big deal. It just took us some time to get our check... like maybe 10-15 minutes? Other than that, I really enjoyed having dinner here and would recommend those who are adventurous and do not mind walking around with garlic breath!
I am currently fresh off of lunch from Dino's and the experience was so great, I had to turn on my laptop and write a review RIGHT NOW.
My bf and I got the munchonme $5 deal for one entree (your choice of a 10in pizza with 2 topping, pasta dish, 4 layered lasagna, or an Italian sandwich). The deal also comes with a salad and a drink. That's dirt cheap for just $5!
As we took our seats, the owner was already out with a plate of complimentary bread sticks for us! They were warm and fresh out of the oven - with a sprinkle of parmesan it was absolutely delicious. My bf got the 10 in pizza with chicken and pepperoni. Came out so piping hot and the cheese was stringy as they get - just the way I like my pizzas. I ordered the turkey ciabatta with smoked gouda. I was starving and the sandwich couldn't have been a better choice for me to get through the rest of my day. The new owner provided amazing customer service. He would come out and check on us every once in awhile and made conversation with everyone eating there. He even stopped by and gave us more coupons right before we left! Even people from the kitchen came out to greet us goodbye and that they hoped to see us again. Friendliest service I ever had! I am definitely coming back for more.
Wings! Every Wednesday evening my friends and I always drive up to Solana beach for their 35cent wings and mozzarella sticks. I usually get "mild" but it comes in "hot" as well. Their wings are pretty big compared to wings you would get elsewhere and they're super juicy! Mozzarella sticks are absolutely amazing. I love it when you take a bite and the next thing you know you're chewing and chewing and chewing because the mozzarella cheese is an endless stringy piece of heaven.
You seat yourselves. The place can get pretty crowded so it really depends on how vigilant you are in looking for seats. This has never been a big issue for me and the low prices for such good wings makes the waiting around for seats worth it.
