I finally got up enough courage to watch that porn from the bingo night back in January AFTER spending several hours at Mark Bar. I think I should have spent my time at Mark Bar instead of trying to watch that terrible porn. Where do they get men and women that look THAT skanky? Seriously - gross. Still a good story for the "where on earth did you get that dvd" question.
I had to dock Mark Bar a star because they got a computer for keeping track of the drinks. Boooooooo....
As far as this neighborhood is concerned, and as far as I'm concerned, this is the best restaurant in the northern end of Greenpoint. It is very cheap, the portions were huge, and the service was unexpectedly good.
For two of us:
each a beer
guacamole and chips
2 orders each of tacos - I barely finished off one, but my bf finished his without a problem
I can't believed I've lived here for so long and have managed to not make it in sooner - what is wrong with me?!
Their veggie burgers are very good, much better than BL's, they hold together well and have delicious avocado mayo served alongside it.
Sitting outside is a huge plus. The coffee there is really good, and I'm not much of a coffee drinker anymore. The tea's nice, too... I've never had to wait for a table for dinner, and the service is what is to be expected - laid back.
My method when going in to Kiska is to point to the kielbasa that I want and ask for 2 links of it because I don't know what everything is called. The kielbasa is always super tasty, and their bacon, oh their bacon!!! Delish! It is worth it to wait in line.
I am SO happy The Garden is in my neighborhood. My boyfriend has recently been into making homemade bread, so fresh yeast was in order. He and I looked, it seemed, like everywhere for the stuff and The Garden has it in 1/2 lb and 1lb blocks.
I agree with the other reviewers, their produce does leave a bit to be desired. I mean, I like to shop at the farmer's market as much as possible, but when I need something middle of the week, the Garden will do but they don't have the best - their onions are the strongest onions ever - you have been warned. I don't know what it is is... maybe the produce doesn't move as fast as other places, or their storage and handling aren't as good... It is still the best place in the neighborhood on non-market days - and they have fresh yeast!
I like the meat at Polam, but I really go there for their sauerkraut. Their kielbasa is always tasty, the sauerkraut is the best (especially the kind with carrot.) Every time I go in there are all girls behind the counter, so can't comment on the friendly samples! Works out to be the best easy dinner: kielbasa with boiled potatoes and a huge side of 'kraut and globs of good mustard.
I really really want to love Bogota. I do. The food is good, I like the wine, the staff are really nice but the service is oh so slow! I have to decide in advance that I'm going to go, and I can't go when I am famished because, well, I'm gonna wait for what seems like an eternity to get my food/order/etc. Perhaps the slowness is in part because of the time it takes to prepare the arepas? I don't know. Having a relaxed atmosphere is one thing, but being so slow that I won't go in for a meal is another thing altogether. I will keep trying...
Oh Pio, I'm downgrading you from a 5 star to a 4 star.
The chicken and calamari are spectacular. I have had a super over cooked chicken once in the past year, and I get their chicken once every 2-3 weeks. So whoever it was that gave Pio the 1 star for that, seems this happens more often than I thought.
They replaced or lost an awesome waitress/hostess which is super unfortunate because she'd always tell me if the plantains were good or not, and have other recommendations which were spot on. Too bad... The new girls that are there are not as competent, have gotten a completely wrong takeout order since my favorite girl left.
I've actually sat and eaten at this place about 3 times and am never impressed with the service there so my tip is: get the takeout! Their prices have increased and last I checked they hadn't changed their menus!
I still love this place, the prices are still good. You cannot get a whole chicken, plantains, rice and beans, bring it home, and cook it for less money than Pio Pio... and if I did manage to make it at home, I still wouldn't have that amazing sauce!!!
I had to go with a somewhat neutral rating because well, sometimes the G is wonderful and sometimes I wait, and wait, and wait. One weekend it took about 45 minutes for the train to come, another night (a Tuesday) there was work being done on the tracks and the G wasn't running with NO SIGNS posted, nothing emailed via the MTA or anything. None of the MTA people knew what was going on, or anything. It sucked, big time. I've always had bad experiences with the bus in Greenpoint and grit my teeth on weekends with the G...
5/8/08 - update
I am revising my review, and reducing the rating from 3 to 2 stars. I waited at the G this morning for almost a half hour (maybe it was twenty minutes but still) it was a Thursday morning people and I got to work super late because of you: G Train.
