spicy bean curd, cucumber
My friends and I have officially made it a date to get to one of the three Tataki locations once a week. Each location has been amazing but this was the first one we went to that made us keep wanting to come back!!
I'm familiar with global fisheries, their management, and loopholes in regulation and of course have watched several documentaries on the matter. As a person who does my best to use my dollar towards sustainable choices, fish is always a touchy thing for me to buy/order -- tho I love the stuff. Tataki let's me feel so much better -"guilt-free" as it were- about eating sushi and fish in general. Not only do I feel confident about the sourcing..... The fish tastes UH-AMAZING. Arctic Char!? Faux-nagi!? Sooo good and brilliant.
I have to say tho, my two favorites are actually vegetarian.. Spicy Tofuna and Ratatouille. My friend who is a meat fiend/anti-tofu didn't realize it was tofuna until I said "yea I ordered both veggie rolls!" His response with a puzzled look on his face: "That wasn't fish!?!" --- Touché.
Lastly.. The service is so great across the board at all locations, on any night -and trust me we've been lots of times. Please go to Tataki! And only Tataki for your sushi needs and cravings!
I am in love with Tataki South's vegan and vegetarian options. The Spicy Tofuna is my favorite roll and the garlic edamame is so good. I love bringing vegan and omnivore friends here so we can all enjoy great sushi.
I recently had a big gathering of 16 people and made a reservation. I called several times to update the reservation as I kept inviting more people. I was slightly nervous since it's a small restaurant. But each time, the staff was friendly and assured me that there was a back room where my party would be seated.
It was so great that they had room for such a big party and the waiter was attentive and kept the many orders coming. The drinks there are great (the sake sangria is a must) and my friends loved the food.
The service was perfect. The waiter and I reviewed the bill together and he made sure that everything was good before we left.
It's one of my favorite sushi places in San Francisco.
I live in the neighborhood and decided to go out for sushi a while ago and discovered this place. The food is great, the ambiance is both nice and not stuffy/fancy feeling. I try and stick to a mostly vegetarian diet with occasional fish, and I'm happy to report that the vegetarian sushi rolls here are great! very reasonably priced (I always thought paying $10 for what's basically rice and squash rolled up at some sushi places was a bit silly). The spicy tofuna rolls could have had me fooled. I also really like the fact that all their fish is from sustainable sources, which is one of my reservations about eating more seafood in the first place.
And as a plus, the chef was even willing to do a special roll combination for my friends and I!
Anyway, in summary, good sushi, reasonably priced, great environmental stance and great vegetarian options for those that don't eat fish. Highly recommended.
Growing up in Vancouver and living in Asia, I have a fondness for Sushi, I love it, it's almost become a comfort food for me. In San Francisco, I've found some great sushi (Akiko's - 4 Stars), some good sushi (Tsunami - 3 stars) and some okay sushi (Sushi Rapture - 2 stars) and now that we live in Noe Valley, we've found some excellent sushi close to home in TATAKI SOUTH! What makes it even better is that the restaurant only serves sustainable seafood and as my wife is a Environmental Scientist who has worked with the World Wildlife Fund for Nature, this is just grand!
Four of us arrived at 8pm on a Saturday and although it appeared full, after 5 minutes we were seated in the back next to the bar. The service was prompt, friendly and the sake was cool and delicious (nice little selection too)! The menu is a mix of Sushi, Robata (Japanese Grill), Vegetarian options and of course Tataki dishes (lightly seared marinated fish). We decided to go all out and try a bunch of different things, in fact I think we gorged on fish....
*** GARLIC EDEMAME (pan-fried organic soy beans with garlic soy sauce)
*** TEBASAKI ROBATA (grilled chicken wings with sea salt)
*** NEGIMA ROBATA (grilled chicken thigh, onions, sweet soy reduction)
***ENOKI DREAMS ROBATA (grilled enoki mushrooms wrapped in bacon)
*** IWANA TATAKI (farmed arctic char, capers, yuzu citrus reduction, fresh dill chiffonade)
*** KATSUO TATAKI (pole-caught skipjack tuna, shiso, sweet mustard)
*** EXTINGUISHER ROLL (albacore, avocado, habañero masago, spicy aioli)
*** ISLANDER ROLL (asparagus, avocado roll topped with seared fillet mignon and pineapple)
*** CANDLESTICK ROLL (arctic char, lemon, avocado, asparagus, red tobiko)
*** HOT POTATO ROLL (sweet potato tempura roll topped with spicy tofuna)
*** MISO SOUP, SPICY TUNA ROLL and ARCTIC CHAR & AVOCADO ROLL
Wow, what a feast! I really enjoyed the Garlic Edemame (We had two bowls it was so good), the Negima skewers, Katsuo Tataki and the Candlestick Roll. I was expecting the Extinguisher to be hotter even though it was still delicious and I thought that the Islander had far too much mayo on it even though the meat was cooked perfectly.
Although TATAKI SOUTH is somewhat pricy, it's guilt-free sushi knowing that everything on the menu is sustainable and absolutely enjoyable. We will definitely be back, not only because it close, not only because it's sustainable but because it's great damn food!
Holy tofuna. I love great vegetarian sushi, but it's nearly impossible to find. Most places in Cali just do an uninspired-raw-veggies roll. Which is fine, but where's the love?? But Tataki South was dynamite!
Started with the garlic edamame, I was dying it was so good. That is a MUST order, people! With that and nigori saki we were off to a good start. Five rolls and some sashimi later we were stuffed. For me, the tofu nigiri is the best I've ever had, so sweet and chewy. The hot potato roll was delicious. I will definitely be back.
Also, definite contender for Loo of the Year!
What a great addition to my 'hood! I've been to Tataki South twice now, and both times have found the fish to be fresh and delicious. Tataki South boasts creative rolls (the Extinguisher Roll is delicious and comes out with a fire on the tray!), deliciously executed sashimi, and an extensive and delicious vegetarian menu. Though I'm sad that they no longer serve hamachi, I appreciate that Tataki South is encouraging sustainable fishing. Even without hamachi on the menu, I think Tataki South is some of the best sushi I've found in the city, and I'm so glad it's nearby.
Some of the non-vegetarian highlights include: the Extinguisher Roll, the tataki's (I've had 2, including the Sea Bream, and they've both been excellent), and the Golden State Roll. The garlic edimame is a good starter, as well.
The vegetarian rolls include such ingredients as spicy "tofuna" and sweet potato. I tried the sweet potato roll and tofuna roll and they were both quite tasty! I would order them even though I'm a fiend for fish. Coming from vegetarian-unfriendly Orange County, my sister's husband thought Tataki South was the culinary highlight of their trip!
I will definitely be back, hopefully in time for happy hour!
