Oh dear GOD... my cat needs a sedative.

My kitten... needs a sedative. Or maybe I do.

Whenever I print, she goes crazy. She causes a paper jam crazy nearly every time.

I am at wits end. I don't know what to do. It does not matter where she is, if I print, she comes running... tries to jump on the paper try and falls. Than she sticks her head into where the paper comes out and causes a jam. This is driving me crazy. I cleared a paper jam earlier today with cat hair in impossible places in my printer.

    Cute only goes so far.

Anyone know a good desk where I could put the printer under "homeland security" so to speak? I saw one at The Dump for $1K (that's a bit much).

I don't know what to do. I cannot exactly squirt her with water around electronics (she's not afraid of water anyway) and doesn't respond to loud noise scares when the printer is going. She falls asleep on it for hours waiting for it to go off.

Oh dear GOD someone save me... and my printer.

Sounds like a typical kitten.  If you are serious I can make some suggestions.  If you are not, this is quite a funny tale.

I am serious. I cannot afford to replace either my Mac or my printer.

I've been looking at Sams, Costco, Office Max and Staples (almost bought a new desk here but they were sold out). I'd prefer delivery as an option (don't have a truck).

Cute only goes so far. I have two kittens, the other one doesn't react to the printer like this--thank god.

It seems like covering the printer with a large cardboard box would solve the problem. I bet you can get one for about $1,000 less than that desk.

One of my cats used to do this when she was younger - though it sounds like yours is more obsessed than mine was.

My suggestion is less related to a solution for your printer and more related to behavior modification for your kitten.  Its likely she will grow out of this obsession.  But it sounds like you don't have the time to wait.  So here are some ideas:

    1.  Put your kitten in another room, or crate when you need to use your printer.
    2.  Is there anything your kitten likes as much or more than attacking the printer?  Toys? Chasing a laser light? Treats?  If you can find something your kitten likes more you can distract her with something else when you want to print, over time she'll learn to ignore the printer.
    3. Put your printer out of reach of your kitten.  Could you put it up on a high shelf that she doesn't have access to?  Or perhaps set it up in a closet with the door closed?  If its a wireless printer this could be an easy solution.
    4. Know that you are not alone :) youtube.com/watch?v=otb8…

First Craigslist - reuse and repurpose and it is cheap, cheap, cheap!. But Dana is right, a little kitty behavior modification is in order. She might be fascinated with the printer because she gets a lot of attention! So you could try giving her some attention in a different room. Say get some paper bags and open them up for her to sit inside and play in or get one of those inexpensive lasers and run her ragged or get her a friend for company. Catnip is also a big distraction - Good Luck!

@Christy - right on with your idea about attention!

Kittens especially need a lot of stimulation and play to keep their young minds and energetic bodies occupied.  If this is one of few instances where kitty gets a lot of attention she will surely continue the habit.
Awesome suggestion about playing with her to get her good and tuckered - that will surely help.

Squirt bottle filled with water.  It's how I've trained all my cats and my dog.

Thanks everyone for the suggestion. I just went wireless--so I suppose that may be something to do now.

My cats are loved beyond words and paid attention to constantly. One of us is usually home for the majority of the day. She will sleep on the printer for an ungodly amount of hours just waiting for it to go off.

We have tried squirting her with water--doesn't work since she will actually even jump in the shower with us. Strange...
We have tried even loud noises (think... soda can with rocks in it and shake) but doesn't phase her either.

She will leave the laser pointer, treats... everything if that printer goes off.

Compressed air like dust off , noise might scare her like a hiss and she prob wouldn't know it was you. I would NOT spray her face, tush should do it
