OK - I need to update my review because #1 - I clearly have been back and #2 - I have been please. So pleased with one of my brunch orders, in fact, that I declared it one of the best breakfasts I have ever had (eggs benedict on potato pancakes with caviar...amazing!). I think that deserves an extra 2 stars for sure. I've also been back for dinner and drinks and had really great food and good service. experience redeemed!!
Pin Curls has been an all around great experience - very cool, very professional. I go to Sonya and she does a great job with my color, gives it to me straight when I really need a cut and is just pretty cool, overall.
I have to say - my hands down favorite part of the place is the shampoo room. Comfortable shampoo bowls??? who knew?! I could take a nap in there and be quite happy.
This place has potential, but the owners of Hash need to listen up. You need:
1 - Someone working front of house
2 - An actual ventilation system
The owners of Hash would benefit greatly from walking into their restaurant & looking at it like a customer. The place is tiny & without "rules" around seating before ordering, cleaning off dishes, etc. What this makes for is an awful breakfast experience because of all the asshats who decide to bogart all the tables before even ordering. And I guess I can't blame them...no one & no sign tells them not to.
So basically, to outline what this front of house person needs to do is: 1) clear tables for the idiots who can't figure out how to do it & to prevent other customers from clearing dirty tables in order to sit down & eat their own food. 2) refill coffee because having to go up to the counter, stand and wait & then FINALLY get a refill is stupid OR put the coffee pots on the silverware/condiment table. The front of house person will keep this filled. 3) tell the jerks who sit down before ordering to get in line & wait for a table after they place their order 4) bring food to your table based on your number. Why even give out numbers, if you just have to go pick up your food? I'm down with self service style counter ordering but typically someone still brings you food based on your number. This will prevent everyone from having to swim upstream against the line all the time (see coffee problem above). 4) empty the dirty dish tubs. I'm down with clearing my own table at this type of place, but to only have a completely filled, overflowing tub? Not cool.
Next..."fix" your ventilation system. I put fix in quotes because I'm not convinced there is a system at all. Seriously...don't go here if you're not ok with completely reeking for the entire day. Don't dream of eating here without planning to go home & shower before doing anything else. There is actually a haze in the air.
Basically, the atmosphere has the vibe of a group of hipsters who just opened up a restaurant because they think they make good hash. Until they decide to run this place like an actual restaurant, I won't be back.
The best thing they could do is go to Belly Shack or Urban Belly to figure out how this type of restaurant should actually be run/be like.
So far, so good! I came here last Sunday for a blow out, was able to get a same day appointment and left with my hair looking great! 2 days later, it still looks great and has a decent amount of body. Katie did a great job giving me what I wanted. I also like that she asked about products before either just putting them in or leaving them out. I've had blow outs where stylists have done both and I've either had a blow out that didn't last at all (no product) or that used totally the wrong products for my hair (flat & frizzy) I'll be back this Sunday for my next appointment.
So I find the slices of pie I've had from here a little "meh" but their biscuits with the butter bar are an absolute delight! I could come here every weekend for the biscuits. You can also get a biscuit and bacon, biscuits and ham, etc, but I've always gone straight up biscuit and butter. Chive butter, honey pepper butter - all great. You really don't need anything else with your biscuit...unless of course they start making sides of sausage gravy. *hint hint*
My husband and I are big Bill Kim fans (well - I guess we are more of a big Belly Shack fan seeing that we only made it to Urban Belly last weekend). Since Belly Q has been open for 6 mos, it was about time to go.
+The food is delicious and just what we expected from Bill Kim.
+Bottomless sparkling water - this absolutely delighted me
+The space is itself is great
-The service was only so-so - I asked for my leftover short ribs to be boxed up and the waiter didn't give them to me. I totally forgot until we left & was REALLY bummed.
-It's kind of loud - I don't think I'd want to come here with more than 1 person because I just don't think you'd be able to hear anything. I was already struggling to hear the waiter
I would definitely go back for the food. But in the end - I live to so close to Belly Shack that it may be awhile before we get back there. I would definitely be interested in going back to get one of the grill tables, though, so I am sure we'll make it back within the next 6 months or so.
Oh Tula, how I love thee. Let me count the ways:
1 - You're so close to my house & I can just walk to you. lovely!
2 - Your classes are a great bargain. Not only are your class packages a great deal, but they also don't expire! AND - you offer daily candy deals that current students can take advantage of! Perfection.
3 - Your instructors are a delight - especially Cassi. I love Cassi's classes without fail
4 - Your space is comfortable & cute. Not too hot, not too cold. It kind of feels like a warm hug.
5 - You offer great events and series - beginner's yoga, Nidra reset, yoga challenges (that I unfortunately haven't been able to take advantage of due to travel, but someday...).
Basically - you make me want to do more yoga. You took a yoga skeptic and made a believer out of me!
I live in Chicago, but work in Lansing M-F. My hotel is in Okemos and this is a fantastic find for a 1 hour workout in the evenings. I feel like I get a good workout each time I come. The girls who work the front desk and teach the classes are super nice and not intimidating at all. Pure Barre has a cooler vibe and nicer studio than the Bar Method studios that I've been to in Chicago.
The only thing I would change is the carpet - it's so slippy, even with the grippy socks I bought from the studio. I guess it makes the planks more challenging, but I find it difficult to keep good form because of it.
Getting certified at Chicago Scuba School was an overall easy, pleasant experience. I travel M-Th and was able to do the classroom work on Friday evenings, which was very convenient for me. Just returned from an amazing trip to Maui where I had 3 days of GREAT diving. I plan to go back to Chicago Scuba School to get additional certifications!
