My late wife and I had eaten at Cheesecake hundreds of times after Cheesecake opened in the Hancock. We worked late night. So it was a great place to dine on quality food. When our daughter was born, we stopped going, and later, we went to more neighborhood restaurants. But last night, because we were out after 10, I decided to bring my ten year old daughter to a place where her late beloved Mommy and I shared so many wonderful meals and times. As we left, my daughter asked me if Mommy and I had considered a divorce. Wow! Has this place gotten awful. The place had all kinds of open tables in rooms where people were seated. Yet we were told it would be a five to ten minute wait, which turned into fifteen minutes. The wait was the best part of the meal. It is clear that the staff culture has fallen off the cliff as witnessed by a group of staff members exchanging inappropriate chit chat/salacious gossip by the coffee bar despite the fact that we were within seven feet ear shot. Then there was the food and service. When we sat down, my daughter immediately spotted a dirty bread plate, for which I pointed it out to the server. It took five minutes, but eventually he replaced it. Never got regular water despite my request for it. (Hey. I am not interested in refilling my much smaller than it used to be Virgin Pina Colada.). Waiter took our order separately. Why I don't know. And then there was the food. My Tuna Ahi was the worst meal I have had in over ten years. It was the worst piece of tuna I have ever encountered in my life. I am truly ashamed of myself for having eaten it---such shame I have not felt since 30 years ago when I picked up a sweat hog at 2:00 am at Katzenjammers a long since closed Lincoln Park bar and spent the night with her. (And yes. That was the last time in my life when I ever got drunk.) And then came the fin de sicle--the cheesecakes. Not that bad. They seem to be a little lighter than they were, but they were OK. But the waiter ("Houdini") should have sensed that all was not well when I ordered my check to come with the cheesecakes. Plain and simple. Corporate needs to clean house and start with a new crew from management on down. This place has stage four cancer.
Hands on management. I just called, got a nasty remark, wrote a nasty YELP review, and five minutes later I am on the phone with the owner who could not have been more helpful or cooperative. EVERY property management company is going to get negative reviews on YELP. If you want great reviews, open up a restaurant.
Doug is a true gentleman. He is a Chicago Hall of Famer. Belongs there with Saul Bellow, Richard the First, Al Capone, and Abraham Lincoln. This "emporium" will be remembered for decades to come.
I have been using their services almost non stop for three years. Phil and his staff give concierge quality service at all times. Among the very best services I have ever experienced in my 63 years on this planet
First rate service, prices, and most importantly quality of wood. I am a Fire Place junkie. I live right on the lake, and its either the beach in the late spring, summer, and early fall or the fireplace during the other times of the year. Delivery is prompt. Wood is always high quality, and the prices are much better than other outlets.
It is overpriced. Service is a tad off at times. Food is served HOT, and the food is deliscious. Extensive beer and whiskey list that I can admire from afar as I have been sober for 40 years. A welcome addition to Andersonville.
The problem with the other reviews is that they UNDERSTATE just how wonderul this man is. He began his career cutting meat at a local Jewel, and never lost his work ethic. If you want to know what the work ethic of Chicago was at its apotheosis, you need go no further than Andy.
Not in a million years would I go back to this place. The first time I went here, I rented the SUV on my debit card for a month. I was misinformed as to what I would be charged if I brought the vehicle in on a Monday as opposed to the Friday (I was paying by the week, and the person on the phone miscounted the days. Never got my money back)
But the next time was a disgrace. I was picked up at my house. NOBODY told me that I had to brinng a utiltity bill with to pay by a deibt card. So they would not rent me the vehilce. When I objected that I was not told I needed to have such a bill, I was told by the clerk that she wasn't the person on the phone.
But it is what happened next that IS A DISGRACE. I asked for a ride back to my home over a mile and a half away, and the staff refused to give me and my six year old a ride back. So with child in tow, we walked back home. That REEKS.
