Cielito Lindo (I even love saying the name!) was an unexpected surprise! We were in the mood for latin food, but also something new. We had found this establishment thanks to this here website here and decided to give it a shot.
It's one part authentic Latin flavor one part nuevo flair! What we ordered from the menu came with not only amazing presentation and service, but with an eye toward thinking outside of the Latin food box. Flavors were coupled so unexpectedly, bringing together the familiarity of latin cuisine with subtle yet artful turns of flavor.
We will definitely be coming back around to this one. I suggest you do the same!
We were on our way back from Clearlake when we suddenly got hungry out of the blue. My girlfriend suggested that we stop in Windsor, and as usual she made a wise choice (it doesn't hurt that her dad lives in the area and she has a great lay of the land). So in Windsor we pretty much had our pick of cuisine, but we past by the Jaded Toad and decided that the name and outer decor was reason enough to stop in.
Our instinct was dually rewarded. Not only did they have a wonderful outdoor setting with plenty of fire pits and warmth to sit out and enjoy even in the dead of winter, but they had a great selection of beers to aid in said warmth and the food was amazing to boot.
The decor and the beer selection are enough to go and enjoy anytime of the year I'm sure, but the service was wonderful as well. Definitely something to check out if you are in the area visiting or just passing through!
What can I say about Dad's Kitchen that hasn't already been said about most of the Earth's great landmarks? It is unique, it is fun, and it is an institution that I will always be happy to revisit with my friends.
I have been to Dad's multiple times since living here in Sacramento, and I have to say they've only gotten better with time. After the opening of their expansion of the bar area, no one could argue that your didn't have an awesome place to frequent.
Obviously the first thing we always came to Dad's for was their stellar menu of their classic yet refined menu of American fair of Burgers and of course other inspired menu items.
I'll say that the menu hasn't changed much in these recent years, but that's because tried and true cuisine doesn't have to! We don't go to Dad's for an ever changing menu, we keep coming to Dad's because it's menu you is reliable, not just that but it's reliably good! I've never brought someone to Dad's kitchen for the first time and had them complain about a Dad's Burger with Fries. or anything else on the menu to be honest, and we've tried them all.
Now put that together with awesome staff and a taproom that garners some of the best local selections the west coast has to offer and you can't go wrong with Dad's.
Whether your a Burger field or a Beer connoisseur or just looking for a good place to bring the family for some good old fashioned, fresh, cooked with tender love and car cuisine, Dad's has and will always be the place to go in Sacramento.
No need to take my word for it, just get down there, get in there, and check it out, you won't be disappointed. I haven't and trust me I still go at least once every month or so!
So at behest of a groupon my girlfriend and I couldn't ignore, we headed to Aura for lunch. I had noticed when we pulled up that this was a fairly new restaurant as I used to live in the neighborhood and though I don't remember the name of the previous business, I knew that it had changed ownership.
Upon walking in I had noticed that the place had been completely redone, and it was well done! We were seating by a friendly staff, and always a plus, they didn't bat an eyelash when we said that we had a groupon. This is important because we all know there are 2 kinds of groupon: the new business-We'd love to earn your business-We're Proud of our product Groupons and the We could give a crap-want a quick buck- Don't care about your experience Groupon. I am happy to say that Aura is in the former category.
We were impressed with the selection on the menu, especially excited about the huge selection of Korean cuisine on the menu. Not to say their Japanese selection was lacking, but it just wasn't what we walked in the door for. My girlfriend and I have found plenty of wonderful Japanese eateries around town, but we haven't had a decent Korean venture in awhile, or without traveling fairly far from home to get it!
After much pouring over the menu we decided on the Bulgogi (in my opinion the litmus of any Korean cuisine), the sizzling Bi Bim Bop, and the Crazy Fries for an appetizer. Before they brought us the crazy fries they brought us an interesting assortment of small appetizers. I thought this was an interesting touch, even more so when the waitress told us (after stacking all the little bowls on top of each other) that in the future if we left them out they would bring us more of the same! We declined this time, but in the future if you have a group to feed this is a very generous feature on their part! Not so much that it fill you up, but it certainly had a great presentation and gave my girlfriend and I plenty of flavors to discuss while we waited!
Next came our Crazy Fries, I'll have to admit I didn't have high expectations because well fries are usually filler and most things done with them are decent at best. I have to say not only was the presentation great (an assortment of white, green and purple sauce) but it was also very tasty. I was impressed.
Shortly after that our dishes arrived and like the fries everything was spot on and absolutely delicious. Couple that with wonderful and enthusiastic service and you have a real winner here. We will definitely be going back to try out the rest of the menu and I would suggest you start doing the same!
Miso oh Miso...... Best sushi in town, hands down. Owner, proprietor, Roger Lee is a sushi genius! Why you ask? Because not only does he use the freshest ingredients, but uses a brilliant combination of sauces, toppers, and dips that changes the game of every roll that you could possibly eat there. "What ever do you mean?!" you might ask, well I'll tell you.
There is just about every kind of roll you could possibly think of at Miso. Spicy tuna, salmon, crab etc. etc. All the same fair that you would she in just about every sushi joint from here to Japan. What sets Miso apart from other sushi joints are 2 things. Presentation, and more importantly, FLAVOR. As to the presentation part, look to the heart shaped sushi pic I've posted on this page. Which of course leaves the flavor! I have had platy of sushi in plenty of places and it has been good. What sets Miso apart is that you can order 2 or 3 rolls, that are already topped with some of Roger's (owner) awesome sauces, but you can also add even more layers by asking Roger to work his own magic. Trust me letting go of what you want and letting him work his sushi magic is not only worth it, but also something my girlfriend and I do EVERYTIME we go to this establishment. Why? You might ask? Well Roger is not only a sushi rockstar, who's presentation is absolutely flawless, but on top of this presentation, is a modicum of flavor profiles that come with each roll! for instance, you can order a roll that has one of Roger's special sauces already on it, but when you add 4 different types of masago (smelt roe fish eggs) and one or more of Roger's in house soy sauces (super and spicy) and a whole different dimension to each roll you have. I know making sushi is an art form, but making one roll have 5 or 6 different tastes all together is an outstanding art form unto itself! The super soy sauce alone changes the profile of a roll dramatically!
To top all of this off Roger and his staff are wonderful people! Sit at the sushi bar (best seats in the house) and you'll know what I mean within minutes. Roger is hilarious, creative and awesome to talk to, he's half the reason we go to Miso! His server Peter is one of the best and nicest servers I have ever met, and I have eaten at a lot of restaurants!
In summation, the food is awesome, the atmosphere is awesome, the staff is absolutely stellar! Plus the even have a full liquor license, what could possibly go wrong?! Also Roger is a wonderful connoisseur of all kinds of Sake, ask him and he'll recommend something that will knock your socks off!
In my opinion, Miso is the best Sushi in town period, and everyone I have brought there wholeheartedly agrees, true story.
I make no bones about it, Bombay has the best Indian food in town and we love it! Obviously it's a bit on the pricier side, but it is always worth it. I haven't had a bad dish from this establishment yet, but I do tend to favor their Chicken Makhani and Tandoori Chicken, absolutely delicious! And their naan, I could go on and on about how much I love their naan. Not only does it taste great but it has the best texture that you can't find in any store or most other Indian food establishments in town. Not to say that there aren't any other good Indian restaurants in Sacramento, it's just this on is the best by far!
Oh and the best part is THE DELIVER! Icing on the cake man. Definitely the place to go when you want killer Indian food. Period.
Needless to say that having to call an electrician is never fun, but Edward made the experience a good one! We had lost power to half of our kitchen and I was unable to track down what the problem is. I know when to call it quits and call the professionals. I had found Edward on yelp and gave him a call.
He came by the next day, I was really impressed not only with his professionalism but he was also kind and easy to talk to (I like to ask a lot of questions as I am often curious about the processes of people doing things). He had tracked down the problem to a melted wire behind our break and he fixed it quick.
Edward truly lives up to the name Mr. Fix It, definitely the kind of guy you want on speed dial when something is wrong in your home!
I have no idea how this place can be rated 3 stars overall. So the decor isn't super fancy, but who cares, this place has the best pizza in town, no lie!
The staff is friendly and super knowledgeable about all things pizza. All of their dough is made fresh and hand tossed and apparently almost every ingredient is made in house by the owner who's been in the pizza biz for 30 years!
Now I'm not usually a thin crust kind of guy, but whatever they are doing with the dough makes the crust light and chewy, almost like naan, and it is so good! They use great ingredients on their pizzas and I haven't had one yet that I didn't like. My favorite so far is Da Bronx Bomber.
Definitely the place to go when you want a good slice of pizza and an ice cold beer!
Ah the Rind.... One of the best places I have stumbled into recently. Before I launch into what makes this place so great, while I never thought I would frequent a wine and cheese shop, (not that I don't love wine and cheese, there's just often a certain attitude that comes along with some of those places) this place has been awesome from day one, here's why:
1. First and foremost, this place is owned by and staffed with some of the most friendly and fun people, to be helped by and hang out with. The first time I visited The Rind, I was not only greeted by friendly staff, but ended up having great conversations, trying awesome local products I had no idea existed, and generally having a great time. Everyone who works there is not only friendly, but very knowledgeable about about everything that they purvey, and man do they purvey good stuff!
2. I like the decor, classy with fun twists. it's a smaller space, but I like to think this makes it more cozy and inviting, we always sit at the bar anyhow and chat with the staff. We usually go during the day when it's not too crowded, but we've been told the get pretty crowded in the evenings. A packed house is good for business and I definitely want to see this one succeed!
3. Last but certainly not the least, is the food! I mean wow, I could go on for days about the food! They have like 6 or 7 different kinds of grilled cheese sandwiches and the same number of Mac and Cheeses! So far I have tried 2 of the macs and one of the grilled cheese sandwiches and they have all been AMAZING! Their grilled cheese isn't your standard griddle fair, we're talking artisan bread filled with ooey gooey artisan cheeses, so good!
Now the Mac and Cheeses I have had have been awesome! Like the Not You Mom's Mac and Nana's mac. When you first see the plates you start to think "Well it's kind of a small portion....." but then you take your first bite of that piping hot cheesy goodness and you forget all about that and lose yourself in cheesy goodness, plus their macs are so rich I usually end up taking half of it home for later!
Now there's this special they had on the menu called Legen-Dairy cheese, and it really does live up to it's name! It's essentially a piece of cheese that they grill until a kind of crust forms on it, then they top it with sauteed mushrooms and onions. Let me tell you when my girlfriend and I took our first bite of this we were blown away! It was so buttery and rich. I'd recommend you try it before it's not on the menu anymore!
Which reminds me at The Rind they rotate items on the menus depending on the seasons, which is cool, because you can try fresh new items throughout the year. So much good stuff at The Rind and I haven't even gotten around to trying their cheese boards yet.
They also have an excellent selection of wines and beers on tap that they rotate frequently, needless to say that The Rind keeps it fresh!
Anyways I could go on and on and on about The Rind, but I'll end it now by saying that this place is fantastic, good food, good drinks, and great people!
We had passed by La Huaca a few times during our jaunts to Roseville. I had never seen a Peruvian restaurant in Sacramento and was intrigued and curious to try it. As luck would have it we had found a Groupon and decided to do lunch there.
The first thing I noticed when I walked into this place was how minimal yet well put together the decor was, it gave the place a classy, yet warm vibe. We were greeted by a friendly and very professional looking waiter, we were seated and given our menus. The kind waiter saw that the menu looked a bit foreign to us and took the liberty of highlighting some of the menu items. Again he was very pleasant and professional, always referring to me as sir and my girlfriend as miss, not something I need for a dining experience, but it was pleasant and added to the classy vibe of the place and as I always say, friendly service is always a huge plus for me.
We took a look at the menu and found many different and enticing looking entrees. They had 5 different kinds of ceviche which was interesting, I had no idea you could make ceviche so many different ways! We didn't end up trying any ceviche, but the causas caught our eye and we ordered the sampler of the 5 different causas and I had order something called Seco con frijoles. My Spanish isn't great, but I found this dish interesting because that translates to "dry with beans"! The waiter took our order and shortly thereafter we received our meal.
First off the presentation of the Causas was beautiful, there were cubes of yellow mashed potatoes topped with the different ingredients of the different kinds of causa. One was topped with chicken, one with avocado, one with shrimp, and one topped with Octopus. Now I know I don't like squid, but I was feeling saucy and gave the Octopus a try, it was actually pretty good as were the rest of the causas. Another interesting part about the causas was they were served cold, with was kind of a surprise for us, but didn't detract from the dish whatsoever.
As for the Seco (It's a beef dish) that I ordered, it was anything but dry, it was actually moist, flavorful and tender. I would learn later on that they call it Seco because they dry the meat a bit before stewing it to make it more tender, and boy was it tender! The rice it was nested on had wonderful texture, and usually I'm not a huge fan of pinto beans, but the ones that came with this meal were very good!
Over all this place is a great place to go for a nice dinner out with family or a date night. We felt a little under dressed when we went, but the service was stellar just the same. This was the first time I had Peruvian cuisine and I loved it. Definitely worth a visit if you'r looking for something interesting and different!
