"As good as it gets" says it all. The people and the atmosphere are exactly what I was looking for. There is no ego. There are a lot of very nice people, who I now consider my friends, learning Ving Tsun Kung Fu together.
And of course Sifu Matt Johnson creates this atmosphere with his patient and gentle guidance. I learn something about Ving Tsun and myself in every class.
My very first and only 5 star rating! Incredible experience all the way around! Jamie and Katie are an absolute pleasure to work with. They intuitively understand the style I am after and are able to make it happen within my price range. With incredible service. I am overwhelmed. Nice work Brilliant Atlanta!
Pros: It is a beautiful building, inside and out. They have some very large displays/exhibitions. They have tried to make sure it is educational and it does come off as a theme park or too childish. It is a class act and something the city is and should be proud of.
Cons: The Aquatic Show is deplorable. I am several days removed and still wish I could get that hour of my life back. It was a packed house filled with families and children of all ages. So in consideration of that, they start the show 10 minutes late, spend the first 15 minutes talking to the crowd, spend the next 15 minutes teaching the crowd. Then a dolphin jumps out of the water. Then a bird shows up on someone's arm. Then the whales show up and bob up and down in the water. By this time, virtually all of the children around us were pulling their hair out. 2 were playing games on their parents phones, 3 were whining that they wanted to leave, and another was falling asleep. The parents seemingly in chorus trying to convince their children to pay attention, keep their voices down . . . it was like they were in school. It was the most poorly conceived, least interesting presentations I have ever witnessed.
Also, some of the large exhibits are virtually empty! We stared into the giant dolphin tank and we saw one . . . every ten minutes or so.
I was sure this was a 2 star experience but I like the building so much and it really is designed very well inside and out.
3.5. Someone spent a lot of time thinking through this place. Both the drinks and the food are interesting and compelling.
Decor is very cool but a little cramped. Reminds me of a place where Indiana Jones would go to eat. If we were not trying to make a movie, I could see myself wanting to stay there for many hours.
I find it very pricey, the drinks in particular. Even the taste portions of the whiskey were around 5-10 and up. Not cool. I recognize they are nicely aged/quality product but I felt less than generous in their pricing.
The food is rich and tasty gastropub fare. Our french fries were overly salty and we have salty palates. The cheeseburger was exactly what I hoped except the cheese was just too heavy/rich and drowned out the flavor of the meat a bit. I still ate the entire burger as well as the remainder of my wife's food.
Our server was nice but slightly clueless. Guessing it was her first week.
My family and I had a truly unique experience at this gem. We went for Sunday lunch/brunch. This is not a Sunday brunch place. But we were able to order lunch and it was delicious.
Decor . . . meh, nothing wrong with it, 2-3 stars. It is clean. They should get rid of the carpet when they have a chance. Now that I am watching Restaurant Impossible regularly, can't help but notice carpet . . . no good. The restaurant is clean but the decor does not scream Sarajevo.
The owners where the only people in the restaurant, husband and wife, not the son.
When we walked in, you felt right away that you were eating in their family's home. They put a pillow in the high chair for my daughter. Is that not just the nicest thing?
The portions are generous, we could not have possibly have finished. The meats were flavorful but the bread is the star of the show. They are baking their bread in house! And you can taste the difference. I still think about that bread. All of their food is made from scratch fresh, made with love.
I recommend the coffee as well. It does not stay hot for long. But it is authentic and wonderful.
That afternoon the owner was reading his write up in the tribune. I felt bad telling him how few people I know actually purchase a newspaper. So I showed him Yelp. He couldn't believe that was more important to me. We had a good laugh. By then his wife was playing with my daughter who was playing red light green light. And I remembered again, I was clearly just visiting them in their home. It was a nice feeling.
My wife and I went for our anniversary. We watch Top Chef (and most cooking shows) so it made sense that we needed to try it out.
We had a 6:15 reservation, the place was understandably empty. The host confirmed we were there for our anniversary. We were then seated in the worst table in the restaurant. I have a problem with a restaurant like this having a bad table but that is another story. It is a little hard to explain why the table for 2 is so bad but know it is in the corner at the front of the restaurant and has a 1/2 wall so that one of us feels like they are in the middle of the restaurant staring at both their beautiful wife and the side of a wall.
We ask to move to which they offered any table we wanted. I don't understand that response but we move one table down. What blows me away is that 15 minutes later they seat a single at that table. So they knew they had a single coming in and that table is perfect for 1 but decided to seat us there.
And they have romantic booths in the restaurant, perfect for a couple celebrating their anniversary. 1 was still empty when we left. There was no other mention of our anniversary the entire evening.
The food is fun and whimsical but it was hard to get into the mood. I also don't think it remains interesting forever that they present food that is not appetizing.
I truly believe they have no business running a $500/couple restaurant. It would be much more interesting if they were a casual restaurant. Would choose Schwa every time.
Location, location, location. Without it, this place ceases to exist. Parking lot doesn't hurt either.
Service: When we arrived, were told 5-10 minutes by the miserable women working the welcome counter. 45 minutes later when I went back to get an update, I think I actually heard one of them growl. They were glaring at me when they pointed out the direction I should walk to my table. I think the manager took us to our table. Those women are mean like a bag of snakes. The waiter was nice but little he could do to compensate. Oh, and it took 30 for them to bring my car after dinner.
Food: Mediocre, maybe 3 stars. Chips and Salsa was good. If it is worth stating that the chips and salsa are good, you know there are some issues. My fajitas were good but I would have preferred if they took the skin off the chicken and did not drizzle butter on top. Actually, I take that back, I am glad about the butter :)
There is so much to be excited about and yet I can't ignore my disappointment.
Decor is 4-5 star. The room is great, TV's, outdoor area . . . they really did a great job.
Service has always been friendly but ultimately incompetent. It is always a very nice person apologizing for mistakes. And no major mistakes but they are consistently screwing up. They provide small plates to share apps but pulled them from the dirty stack, literally dripping with old sauce. Bring dinner, forgot the apps. Sitting in front of empty drink glasses or finished meals or being out of food. I don't think I have ever been there without something going wrong as insignificant as it might be.
The owners and managers are off their game as well. A manager, Tom, asked for my input soon after opening. I thought that was a great. I told him I would invite me townhouse complex for a family dinner which made him happy. So I emailed him and the 4 partners of the restaurant and never heard back. It seemed impossible to me they would not want me to organize 16 families to come visit their restaurant so I emailed all of them again. That was months ago, have still heard nothing. I have seen them on occasion when I come in and they wave and say hello to me with big smiles on their faces. Strange.
The food is generally good but the meat, the actual bbq, is lacking. Ribs are tough with little meat. Pulled pork and brisket are good, not enough flavor. Links are fantastic actually. Chicken is ok, And none of it has enough smoke. Period. Not enough smoke. They started with the fake wood pegs and supposedly switched to actual wood. I'm not sure. Sides/etc are good to very good but ultimately not special enough for the actual bbq to be lacking.
The location is perfect for me and I am happy to go in for a beer and watch a game. And I am happy Grand Central is gone. There is a plenty of opportunity here, I just don't think the owners care. Plain and simple.
A-OK sounds just about right. We enjoyed the food, interesting, slightly innovative and tasty. Nothing blew my hair back but could not be described any worse than . . . good!
I am not a fan of small/medium/large portions. There is some reason there but I just don't really care. Appetizer, soup/salad, entree . . . it has worked for years. Why are we spending our time on this? Spend time on the food. When people spend time on gimmicks, tells me they know they are not planning on being around for long.
Decor is not my taste. Cold and modern that did not grow on me.
Host/Waitress/Staff in general were cold and modern too, favoring a "I don't give a damn about you" attitude.
Glad we tired it, do not care to go back but would if forced to.
Sitting outside seems like it would be cool.
Come to think of it, in consideration of the outside sitting and location, would be a good place to try in June.
Eric and PranaJaya is as close to 5 starts as I have ever given. I arrive in pain. Sometimes I leave in pain. But for 6-8 months later I feel amazing.
Eric is very serious about his work, extremely professional. We are lucky to have him in our city. Good man.
