WELCOMING A NEW COFFEE IN TOWN
The crew at Elevation knows what they're doing - I'm a regular at their north location - and my coffee snobbiness senses they've trained the group here well too, although, be warned, the baristas here have to stretch themselves a bit as kombucha bartenders as well (Elevation shares the space).
ON TO THE MENU
If a place makes a macchiato way smaller than bowl of ramen, then you know they're legit. Great balance of a dash of sour, 'roastiness,' all balanced with the foam and sweetener I asked for. A black espresso also reflected this balance and care of flavors. As usual, the presentation of the items is beautiful.
LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION
Inside, this Elevation is such a great hangout. Tall ceilings, chairs swinging from the ceiling, plenty of tables and sockets for those remote workers, and a wonderful (dare I say, Instagrammy) back patio when the weather is nice. Currently, there's NO SIGNAGE on the windows of the store - only 'Flower Kombucha.' Only a sign on the sidewalk indicated Elevation, and if you were driving, you wouldn't see it because it can be blocked by a parked car. On weekdays, it's easy to find street parking a very short walk away.
HITTING ALL THE RIGHT POINTS
Jeni's knows what they're doing - from their innovative flavors, to having a flavor menu board outside, their location location location, their smiling faces, and having one person take your order and delivering it on the other side... they were the image of smooth sailing.
NOW LETS TALK FLAVORS
We took the trio and added in a single scoop in a cup. Our flavors included lavender, goat cheese and berries, coffee with cream and sugar, and the butter cake. POP! Whoooosh - that's them hitting it all out of the park. While the flavors were a tiny bit more muted than what I'd hoped, there are still absolutely no complaints from us. The little slice of waffle cone was a great bonus by adding an extra textural element against the creaminess.
SURROUNDINGS AND SEATING
Located near Armature Works, it's easy enough to park in that big lot in between the two buildings. There's a couple of small tables outside, but on this beautiful evening (and with their dining room closed due to COVID) there was a good crowd of us spread out outside noshing on ice cream on anything that could remotely look like a chair.
Thanks to the Jeni's team and to Yelp for creating this tasty and safe event.
CRAVING COMFORT KOREAN CUISINE
You'll find all the familiar Korean hits here: Kimbap, Bulgogi, Bibimbap, and of course... their wings. And it's all served with great prices under a casual atmosphere. We've ordered all our dishes to go and most items traveled well!
I NEED MORE OF THEIR FOOD
We've been amazed at the variety of banchan for just two meals - like, once we got 7 totally different banchan! Yum! (Legit, yo) And there's a few in there that aren't of the pickle variety (but why people don't love that, I'll never know). The fried chicken has great flavor, but we know it'll be much crispier if fresh in house. Bibimbap was same ol' same ol' - I asked for spicy and it wasn't - a nice side plop of gochujang-base sauce could fix that. I know I'll be returning to try even more menu items!
WE'LL BE BACK
The restaurant is somewhat cavernous especially for a casual concept. During our visits we were the only ones picking up (but we also came during odd hours on weekdays) - I truly hope these can all work in their favor once the pandemic is more controlled because a place like this is needed for Carrollwood. Also, it's so hard (right?) to find a fried chicken place with good breading and bone-in... this place has it!
ACTUALLY GOOD COFFEE!
I NEVER realized I could get actually good coffee on Flagler Beach!... and it's not Dunkin'-style coffee either! Although small, Yes, Coffee overall knows what they're doing... and their baristas are very polite, hard working, and still take the time to share or teach.
SIMPLY GOOD
As wannabe coffee snobs, we tend to like our coffee simply prepared to really taste the coffee's original flavor. Items like their cortada (It's BIG by using a double shot!) and nitro brew hit the spot. Same with a good ol' pourover. They've captured my delight enough that I want to try their more creative options next time!
FINAL (TASTING) NOTES
As others mentioned, they share a space INSIDE a church, but during our weekday visits, a board and sign outside clearly led the way. This small location hosts a few tables and a couch - although I've seen people studying, I'm not sure I could remote work here. Somehow the sounds of others still carried and - I can't exactly pinpoint the cause - everything just felt too 'close' even though they actually weren't. (This is obviously all in the eye of the beholder and not actual negatives). Side note: BONUS! They also offered a small discount for us bringing in our own cups!
YES TO THE AREA (FOR PARKING, WORKING, AND KIDS)
As a longtime remote worker and new parent, I have to start with this because I'm realizing many coffee shops I used to frequent are small. If baby freaks out, where do I hide??? At Alert Coffee I can normally take over a table and litter it with baby toys too (and coffee and new parenthood go hand in hand) AND while being COVID compliant. And parking... yes! Lots of parking. No need to drag a stroller and my work backpack three blocks in the hot sun.
I'LL TAKE MINE BLACK...
I've tried their Geisha as a pourover, their nitro, and their Ethiopia and Kingfisher espresso blend whole beans for home use. I take mine black so I can really taste the coffee themselves... and well done Alert. Although I haven't tried their other espresso bar options (which include milk alternatives as well as 'infusions') I'm sure they're great because they start off with a great coffee base.
I'M A FAN. IN CONCLUSION...
I just wish their hours go beyond 2pm, but I guess the brewery reclaims the space once the coffee shop closes. I'm so happy I found a coffee shop that does coffee well while also ticking off many bonuses for someone like me. And maybe add a big selection of pastries, please :)
