I'd seen this little store on other visits to the shopping center but didn't think of them when I became a pool owner--I went to Leslie instead. What a mistake that was. At the latter, I was upsold each visit and then given the cold shoulder when I dared to return something. But then I remembered Titan.
The staff at Titan that helped me (Kevin and Sam) were friendly and gave me great advice. I was never pressured to buy anything even though they tested my water and spent a lot of time with me. I found their prices fair. I expected them to be higher being a small store but that wasn't true. It's nice supporting an independent business vs a corporate chain. They have great stores as neighbors, too: Mothers, Yogurtland (my reward for doing my own pool service), and Crown Ace Hardware.
I was going to give them 3 stars but after my experience today, it's down to 2. Upsell, upsell, upsell!!! Oh, they saw me coming--the new pool owner. As noob, one trusts a business to not rip you off. My first visit was fine enough--a brush, a pole and a leaf net. But when I went back for chemicals as I'd decided to do the weekly service myself, it was "you need this...". "we highly recommend this..." and on and on. I reluctantly bought their suggested "necessities". The most unneeded was Pool Perfect/Phos Free for $99 (on sale--wow!) of unneeded additive. I did some research and I don't have an phosphate or algae problem and my salt generator/chlorine isn't even stabilized yet. I returned it.
Speaking of the return, 'return' is an evil word at Leslie Pool. The manager's face turned to stone and he began with a quizzical "why?" Then, "what are you going to use" and on and on with his suggestive reasoning. I cut him off saying that I just want a hassle-free return. He had acted like my buddy each time I came in but now he suddenly couldn't remember my name, or anything about my account profile. The crediting to my CC was cold and unfriendly. I was ignored after that even though I wanted to buy something else.
Since John was ignoring me, a slick-looking guy in a dress shirt comes up and greets me. He was oblivious to what had just taken place. I told him I just needed some bags of salt. "That's it?" he asked. I told him yes and he then proceeds to ask how I'm handling this and that on the pool and what I need to buy because "they highly recommend it". He keep going on and on to the point I had to cut him off too with, "I'm tired of you guys with the upselling and suggestive selling every time I come in." That stunned him. He started in again! I had to cut in and tell him I know that corporate is directing him to do this but he really needs to stop. That too stunned him. He rang me up but then couldn't help himself and he started to pitch me again! This time, I was nicer and just said, "I'll keep that in mind". Now, he was nice and carried the 3 bags of salt to my car and thanked me for shopping there. The latter which I won't be doing soon.
BTW, I found a small, independent pool supply a half block from there that is super nice and didn't try to sell me anything (Titan Pool and Spa Supply). I want to close with this: each time I visited, why did I see so many Leslie's customers complaining of green water after they did what Leslie recommended? Perhaps a good way to sell more chemicals?
Wonderful! We hadn't been here in about 3 years (no particular reason why--just hadn't) The place has been redone inside since then and it looks great--warm, inviting and modern yet cozy. The visual flow of the seating is nice--well done. We had a 6 pm reservation but we really didn't need one as at that time as there was only one other couple. I think it was the party weekend for Halloween, so that may have been why it was quiet. I think other places on Del Mar were the same. Anyway, our server was friendly and attentive. We ordered the braised leg of elk and the veggie moussaka--both outstanding!
This is a great shop. Yeah, no shop is perfect and I've not been greeted here a few times but I'm still giving it 5 stars due to the excellent selection of mtn. bike parts and accessories--and the great advice I get. Bike selection is nice--my next ride will most likely be from here. I've had 2 bike fittings done, my wife has had one done and we now love riding our bikes! They are now comfy and efficient. They're expanding their road stuff, so don't dismiss them as a mtb-only shop even though that is the their roots. The weekend shop rides are fun, too.
While I've had lunch and eaten here during work association meetings and had great experiences, I was completely turned off with our poor experience today. We chose BWG for our combo Fathers Day/2 birthdays celebration. Our server was energetic, friendly and efficient when we first arrived but halfway into the meal he disappeared never to return. Our meals were very slow to arrive. The food quality was ok but the coleslaw on the 3 plates that had it was wilty and bland. We had to ask for the check since the server never came back. No one picked it up once we put our CC with it, so my wife took it up only to be sent back to the table by someone (who should of taken care of it). She got up again and was helped by of all people, the guy bussing tables. Afterward, I asked for the manager and he was pretty much worthless. After hearing my complaints, he proceeds to tell me why everything was wrong like I'm supposed to feel sorry for him. I wasn't looking for a comp but maybe should have found him before my CC was run. He said that I should have talked to him sooner as he could have done something for me--like that matters? I stiffed the server his tip, too, which is something I never do. BTW, I found him later--he had switched to tending bar. We will never go back as we'll spend our dining dollars elsewhere.
After driving by this place for years, we decided to try it at lunch. The staff is not cheery, seating us at a table and not saying much at all. A big turn off was finding a dirty fork and tea cup. When I told the host, he scrutinized them like he was seeing if I was lying. He came back and handed me another fork and cup and never said sorry or anything! The cart ladies are down in the mouth too--they were short with us and seemed offended if you didn't want what they had on their carts. The dim sum was ok--I've had better though. We ordered chow mein too and it was a let down--bland. No thanks were given to us when we finished. It was like we were an inconvenience to them showing up for lunch. I'll stick to Ten Ten in Anaheim.
Super delish and creative dishes. Ordered dinner to go 2X and stretched it to a 3rd night. Everything was so good. The staff was friendly and service fast. Buffalo Meatloaf, Fish Tacos, Tortilla Casserole, Crab Cakes--awesome!!! I want to hit it for breakfast next trip to Mammoth. They have seating there but it's kind of busy with peeps ordering, gawking at the overhead menus--no prob at all eating at our condo. Killer food without any effort from us. Some may say it's spendy but the food is insane!
My wife and I hadn't skied in 10 years--ouch! She has shaped skis and boots with custom beds that still work but my gear was trashed--boots' liners were gooey and de-lamming, 203 skinny Dynastars--yuck! So I had to rent everything. The crew at the store was super nice and patient even though they were busy (an Easter Week evening). Based on my input, they reco'd a Performance Package which included Fischer Watea 84 skis--I had no idea what this ski was but it was awesome in the spring conditions the first day and 4 inches of new powder the next. I'm so happy they offered an option to a beginner rental. I was done getting the gear in about 40 minutes and Mike in the shop waxed my wife's skis while I was getting my rental done. Returning the gear was hassle-free too. A great experience!
We ended up here one night on our visit to Orcas due to ill planning--every place we had on our list on the island was packed. We barely got into this place as well. I'm glad we did as the experience was nice. Portions are generous but not overboard, lots to choose from on the menu. Very nice complexity of flavors. My only complaint is that my dish had a bit too much heat to it--the exponential kind keeps building as you eat. I was soon sweating from the chiles, lol. Great margaritas helped cool me off. Nice service. We'll stop by again.
We stumbled upon Luna's for a late lunch after arriving on Orcas. The menu had a good amount of items to choose from. Our almost 7 y/o daughter had a nice pizza, my wife and I opted for sandwich and soup combos. My dungeness crab sammy paired with tomato bisque soup was wonderful (pairing rec'd by our server). There was a slight funky smell from the walls or old furniture since the place is old itself. Other than that, everything else was great.
