A rare five star review from me but there is really nothing to criticize about the delicious meals and overall fabulous dining experience we had here last night. A serendipitous coincidence that friends of ours from San Francisco overlapped with our visit to Munich by one day. Our host recommended we try one of the restaurants near Herzogstrasse and Yelp led us to try Blu Mediteraneo.

You had me at hello when we were seated outside on the quieter Bauerstraße rather than on the noisier Nordendstraße. I love dining al fresco on a warm summer night but I hate sitting next to a lot of car traffic. The owner greeted us as we got out of our taxi and seated us right at the table we'd reserved. (After an ugly experience in Berlin last summer [Schneeweiß, I'm talking about you!] when we requested a table outside without having a reservation, we've learned our lesson!) Drinks were ordered (the Hugo is my summer cocktail for 2015) and we settled in to peruse the menu between catching up with one another.

The way to go here is with the wine flight paired with your choice of a three, four, or five course meal. Among the four of us we had four courses although we we each ordered three courses. Every item brought to the table was simply delectable, cooked to perfection, and beautifully presented. For the appetizer I had the grilled watermelon wedge with a golden crusted small slab of feta and a piece of grilled octopus, which yielded so many perfect bite combos. We also enjoyed the beef carpaccio and Andalusian gazpacho. I skipped the pasta course in favor of dessert (more later of course) but everyone else loved their dishes also. Hubby's ravioli with parmigiano was the best although the seafood cappellini was a close second.

For the main course everyone seemed to want fish after spending more than a few days enjoying typical German fare. My sea bass with lemon was excellent as was the lamb rack that someone else ordered. The final course was the dessert that I ordered, a perfect molten chocolate cake served with delicious homemade ice cream and four spoons. It was a perfect ending to an absolutely lovely evening. I hope I have the chance to return to this excellent restaurant on our next trip to München!

"Achtung - Kunde droht mit Auftrag" is a phrase I learned on this trip and roughly means: "Warning - Customer threatens with business!" This is exactly what happened at this uber popular spot where hubby was yelled at by the server who was tired of telling potential customers that all the outside tables were reserved. Excuse us for asking on such a gorgeous evening if we could have the privilege of enjoying dinner at your restaurant, but we gladly took our business elsewhere and do not recommend this trendy spot with such blatantly rude service! I cannot speak to the menu at all because no one in their right mind would stay for dinner after such treatment. I suppose if we'd made a reservation this would be an entirely different review, but this is what happened to us when we wanted to eat here. Actually another waitress separately told me without any drama or rudeness that we could sit inside, but hubby's experience ruined the possibility of eating here that night!

What a great place to sit outside for breakfast! We got there at around 10:30 on Saturday morning, a bit after opening but ahead of the rush so we had no problem getting a table outside facing the park across the street. What a treat watching this cute neighborhood wake up on the weekend as people were to-ing and fro-ing to the nearby grocery store or heading to the park playground with their children.

The woman taking orders at the register was calm and competent. As dishes and beverages became ready they were promptly brought to our table. Hubby had the charcuterie plate which came with a bit of cantaloupe, some delectable ginger chutney, and plenty of bread and a bagel in addition to the assorted meats and cheeses. I ordered an unneeded but of course finished bagel with sundried tomato cream cheese; a tomato, olive and feta mini quiche; fresh berries and creme frâiche; and a fresh squeezed OJ. All were excellent as was the coffee. Really enjoyable experience and a delicious früstuck!

This restaurant made me appreciate the American custom of tipping. Generally I like not having to tip in Europe (although that practice seems to be changing a bit), but at home a waiter knows that he can earn a great tip by providing excellent service or a not so good tip if he's just not that into you. The servers at Anda Lucia were just not that into us. A request for water was never fulfilled, our waiter rushed us through ordering, and gave us the hand when we tried to get his attention for something. Finally, he tried to insist that our US style credit card without a chip wouldn't work in his machine before he even tried to swipe. Really? Were we the first customers you ever had with a chip free credit card? And then lo and behold! The credit card worked on the first attempt, so what was all the drama about?

When traveling abroad, we bend over backwards to dispel the myth of the ugly American. We are polite and deferential and NEVER start off in English. Hubby speaks both German and Spanish quite well, and I can do just fine in Spanish myself, especially at a restaurant. So why the lackluster service? We'll never know but I hope it wasn't because we're auslanders!

The food btw was excellent! Sardines, mussels, cold seafood mix, tortilla española, and patatas bravas were all delicious. Some of the dishes were slightly different from what we're used to at home but because we're not far from Spain, perhaps more authentic. The meatballs were all beef and no bread crumbs so they were a bit dense, but they came in a delicious tomato sauce. The setting right on Sauvigny Square was also beautiful and a definite draw.

If we'd had a different waiter this review would be four stars at least, but only the excellent food and drinks kept it at three rather than two stars.

And yet another example of why I'm not suited to live in New York. Don't understand a sandwich place that gets to berate customers for being too slow to order or when the guy taking the order gets it wrong it's the customer's fault! The guys making the sandwiches already have the advantage because they're standing a couple feet above and looking down at you the customer. And the shortness and sarcasm with the PAYING public was not because the place was crowded nor were the orders complicated. It was just a power trip soup nazi kind of thing. But like Jerry Seinfeld I had to go back, if only for bemusement at this sociological experience! Took the husband just so he could bear witness to this New York phenomenon we saw repeated from upper to lower Manhattan during our recent week in the city. Sandwich, salad, and bagel were just OK btw.
