We've sampled vinegars and oils at several locations, in Austin and other cities. We enjoy the freedom to wander and taste the wares, but Vom Fass is a bit skimpy with the samples which are only available with the assistance of store employees. Flavors are very diverse, but the balsamic lacked the sweetness that defines them, and the oils (particularly nut oils) had thin flavor and a bitter after-taste.  We decided on a bottle of oil and one of vinegar, and we're still reeling at the price. $165 for the two small bottles! We STRONGLY suggest that you inquire about pricing, and consider making a trip downtown to Con Olio. There, you can taste the offerings freely, the flavors are considerably more intense, and the prices won't give you a stroke!

Beautiful Saturday evening, BYOB wine, and food from Nettie's=perfection!  The gumbo is full of flavor and we loved the potato salad on top. The catfish has a great crunch on the coating and is fluffy and delicious inside. The fried shrimp is great, but it's the homemade remoulade that knocks it out of the park. This chef has a knack for sauces.. She brought us complimentary fried green tomatoes (YUM!) with Vidalia onion relish...really wonderful. The menu is not extensive, but with food this good, I'll keep going back for the same things anyway.

Spent a few days sampling the food in Santa fe. This is the only place we just had to go to twice. Everything was delicious and fresh, from enchiladas to pupusas to stew. The service was great and friendly, the atmosphere so casual it seemed like everyone there knew each other. Lots of musicians (carrying instrument cases) came and went, walking or biking by and stopping to chat with friends. We got a taste of the local culture as well as the food. If you go to Santa fe, skip the pricey restaurants and go straight to the heart of the city.

GREAT flavor! We had green chili cheesesteak and green chili burger with garlic fries (with aioli). First time I've ever eaten a burger OR fries without ketchup, which would have ruined both. We left completely stuffed and can still taste the garlic and chilis when I think of our lunch. It was a little salty for our taste, but so delicious.

Best aspect: open on Sunday, which is why we were there. Food is quite plentiful but bland. There's not much to choose from in the area, so La Fonda is an acceptable option, but don't expect too much flavor.

Huevos rancheros with green sauce...fantastic! Wait staff was good, tables were a little sticky but it was clearly a dive, so it goes with the territory. It was one of the tastiest breakfasts I've ever had.

The variety of offerings on the menu was impressive..pretty much every Italian dish we could think of. The service was predictable...we'd read about the waitresses sitting and talking, in no rush to wait tables. That was true during our visit. The food was passable, and she almost got our order right. My husband ended up with pepperoni, not meatballs, in his calzone, and in large quantity and stuck together. Would probably order more carefully, and more clearly, if we find ourselves there again.

Really not much to choose from for lunch, so three stars is pretty great in this part Of Texas. Plan on fried food with cream gravy, which is delicious. Salad bar is sort of passable, but that's ok because the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and cream gravy is tasty, home-made, and filling. Sweet tea is perfect. The atmosphere is so west Texas that the locals feel like part of the scenery. Better not be in a rush...the wait staff is minimal and pretty slow. But they're friendly!

Stopped here on the way from South Padre to Austin. It's great to find a halfway point for lunch that is clean, fresh, has a good variety of options, and (best of all) NOT a chain. Burgers and sandwiches were great (ask for lettuce and tomato on your sandwich if you want it). Fries were crispy and the fruit cups were very ripe and fresh. Blue bell hand-dipped ice cream and smoothies, too. Will be back!

Immaculately clean, friendly, and very comfortable inn. The staff is accommodating and helpful. Not much to do in Artesia, but we wanted a nice place to stay to  visit Carlsbad Caverns (about an hour away). The Heritage is small (11 rooms), and the rooms are small and close together. The breakfast is minimal (packaged pastries, ham & cheese, boiled eggs, cereal) but coffee is good and fresh. There is a notebook at the desk with menus from local restaurants (several pretty good for this area). Nice touches: homey bedding..not hotel-grade, power strips for charging electronics, well-stocked drinks in refrigerator in common area with honor-system payment.

If you want Internet, ask for a room close to the router. Rooms in the front are a bit noisy with street traffic, especially motorcycles.
Biggest plus: friendly and helpful staff who will work hard to make your stay comfortable.
