Funzel is a good choice for some Swabian food if you're in the area, especially if the weather is nice enough to sit outside. We stopped by for dinner on a very pleasant evening, so we never even saw the inside, we sat down outside and enjoyed a couple leisurely beers and some food. The outside seating is benches and booths on the edge of a quaint little square a couple blocks off the beaten path in Sindelfingen, and if you've got the choice you should sit outside.

Like many placed in the Stuttgart area, Funzel keeps a couple copies of it's menu translated in English, and our server spoke enough English that we didn't have any trouble ordering (except for when my colleague asked for vinegar to go with his food, but a local at the next table over was kind enough to speak up and give us the right German word ('essig'). The service was as friendly as you'll get in Germany, which is to say polite but not saccharine like you get in the US. Also like the rest of Germany, the pace of eating is much more leisurely than you get at most places in the US. It will probably take a few minutes for ever step of the process, and food takes longer to come out, but once you've got a liter of hefeweizen in front of you, who cares?

As far as food goes, we all went for schweinhaxe which was the special of the day (always on the menu but discounted some days), so I only have that one data point, but it was a tasty one! Schweinhaxe is a massive deep-fried pig knuckle, with the skin still on. It was quite well done; the meat inside was tender and moist, the skin on the outside was near-perfect cracklins, and with just a little bit of salt to season it, the flavor was all pork and all delicious.

Next time I'm in the area, I'll definitely be back!

Swabian food is a regional cuisine, near Stuttgart, as I learned on my recent visit. This restaurant came highly recommended by the hotel I was staying at a week ago. It had sour tripe, under the soup section, which is vey similar to menudo, but only with tripe, and it's huge for an appetizer. Perhaps one of my favorite dishes of all time. Whenever I think about Swabian, I think about that. But that's not all. I tried their beef, and then their pork, their pasta pockets, which is a Sindelfingen local speciality. I have been a long term fan of Hafeweizen, I'd venture to say that my pronunciation is fairly accurate - resulted from practicing saying that every time I need a beer. Of course it has a lot of good bier and not just Hafenweizen. Pork with mushroom sauce, with spaetzel and pasta pocket is a must have here. The best part is sitting outside of the restaurant after it had rained earlier in the day, just take it easy and drink some beer and have some local food in the middle of the town square. Be aware of hamburger, it's technically just beef patties with fries. There is no bun. But how perfect is that?! It's exactly what I like to eat.

Though Yelp tells me this is going to be the first English review of this restaurant, I can assure you that you don't have to speak a lot of German to order your food here. But given no English reviews, I'm guessing this is more of a local people's joint, which, in my opinion, is a good thing.

I'm not sure if I could find another place that served tripe stew, it's not exactly a thing that most Americans like to eat but I'm pretty much sold on that dish in that restaurant. It's going to be one of the reasons that I'd stop by Stuttgart on my future trips, that, and maybe a tour of Porsche factory.

This is a typical old world German restaurant with rustic decor. Service was great. I tried the day menu which happens to be one of the few German dishes that I like: schweinhaxe (roasted pork knuckle). Perfect crisp on the crackle that reminded me of warm pork rinds. Served with freshly grated horseradish that was mild. Wish that more German mains included a veggie.

The highlight of the meal was the bananaweize (wheat beer with banana juice). I like heavy banana and clove notes in my wheat beers and this put it over the top!

If you are looking for good German food in Sindelfingen m, this is a place you need to try. The colaweizen and Hefeweizen is good. Waitresses wear traditional German dresses and the entire place has traditional written all over it. I went with a steak and potato dinner. Steak tastes great and the potatoes were delicious. They mixed in bacon and boom. Awesomeness in my mouth. Ha. But great place to eat at.

Excellent Schwäbisch style food and a great selection of beers, on tap and bottled. Traditional decor and traditionally dressed waitresses. Outdoor seating is nice in summer.
