Herr Max

A very cute cafe with delicious drinks and pastries! Came here last week to meet some friends for coffee and I'm so glad they chose this spot! I had their filtered coffee and a piece of one of their in house baked cakes ( almond cake?). Both items were very tasty!

The staff was super friendly and was quick to make my coffee! I was told that they make most of their pastries and cakes in house and looks like all their offerings are delicious. They had the cutest cookies and petit fours next to the register and I was tempted to buy them all! Actually later that night I got to try some more of their cakes and pastries! We tried a piece of their blueberry cheesecake which was really tasty. We also had an assortment of chocolate treats which were equally as good! There was one treat that was like a salted caramel chocolate tart...sooo good!

Highly recommend this place to catch up with a friend over great coffee and delicious sweet treats. Also, this place takes only cash!

Nice and tasty cakes. They also offer vegan ice-creams which are really good! Cappuccino are nice as well. The place in Sternchanze is really cozy and you will feel comfortable and welcomed.

My visit to Herr Max without a doubt was one of my Hamburg highlights. Friendly staff, ok prices, easy to find, great cakes and an extremely cool interior.

It's hard to name Herr Max's style, but I guess I'd go for something like 'classic abandoned' or 'a long-forgotten castle', but all without making it a dirty or uncomfortable place. Absolutely not. I felt very welcome, and actually didn't notice most of the details - like the handdrawn skulls on every single plate on the wall and wall paper that looks like it's falling off - until I looked at my photos again at home. ;)

They sell ice cream and cakes and although I'm sure the ice cream will taste great as well, I can only say: choose cake! Everything is homemade, looks (and smells) fantastic and the chocolate mousse cake I went for is amongst the best I've ever had. Because as soon as I took a bit, the topping got a bit more liquid and spread out over the whole cake as if it was sauce. SO DELICIOUS.

Oh and they also have free wifi, fast enough to FaceTime (when you're a lonely traveler like I was) ;).

I must say that I am disappointed.
I saw a few cakes that looked great on the pictures on yelp so we decided to have a break there and try two of these. But when we arrived in the store, none of these cakes were here, and actually none of the cakes present that day seemed interesting to us. We ended up taking one slice for two because we both couldn't find something that looked very appealing to us. We ended up with a hazelnut cake with a cassis icing on it.
Unfortunately the cake itself was dry and the cassis icing wasn't really good either...
We both didn't like it much (and trust me my boyfriend is a sweet-addict, it's pretty hard for him not to like anything sweet..)

Wow - all the hype is accurate! Really good/incredible cakes and coffee. Minus one star because it's so busy and loud. We came at 4pm on a Friday, prime Kaffeeklatsch time and it was really busy. The cheesecake was probably the best I've ever had, the poppy seed mousse cake with cassis was also incredible but my rhubarb meringue cake was disappointing. The cake was flavorless, the filling was really solid, and the meringue was weepy. Pour over coffee was great too. Will absolutely be back. I wish they had a cookbook I could buy!

You'll never be disappointed with what ever you choose at Herr Max! They serve lots and lots of great cake.. My fave is Cheesecake and chocolate mousse cake. Their cheesecake is the best cheesecake ever! The tanginess from cheese and lime is well balanced with the moist sweet biscuit base. And the chocolate mousse cake is not too sweet, so you can enjoy the richness of the chocolate. 3 layers of pure joy!

Very nice shop for sweet treats such as cakes, cookies and uniquely decorated cupcakes! The pastel colors of this shop and white wooden tables, along with dainty cottage like furniture gives it a cute, sweet treat feel, which makes sense since it is a dessert shop!

I like how they have pre-wrapped treats that you can buy to go or give as a gift. They also sell jars of marmalade for your convenience in seal tight glass canisters, which would be great to use again at home for spices or whatnot. I have a friend named Max, so I buy him cute gifts from here 'just because'

There is a cooler with ice-cream as well upfront but I believe they specialize more in pastry type delights, and there are plenty of other italian Eis spots to get great ice-cream on this street if you feel like having a scoop of sweet flavored coolness on a cone.

I bought the chocolate cookies and a jar of marmalade :) I also love their homemade cakes. Try them if you need a special Birthday cake!

They also have wifi for mobile addicted customers, and so you can check in on Yelp!

Such a sweet little cafe with awesome cakes. But the vegan range was quite small unfortunately. The mint and ginger tea was great anyway :) thanks for having us !

So many people had recommended Herr Max to us, so I looked forward to breakfast here.

We ordered two different breakfasts, two coffee and two orange juices and the girls working here totally mixed it all up and forgot half of our order. When we finally got it all it both looked and tasted really good, and the café is really charming as well. I wish that I could give the café a better ranking, but unfortunately I found the service too bad for that. The girls forgot orders, ran around looking stressed behind the counter and had no order in what they were doing. And that's just stressful to watch as a customer, even if the food/cakes are good.

Amazing pastries! Worth a U ride! Even the vegan cake was tasting so delicious and not the one where the taste buds get a leftover tast
