Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - Esther L.San Diego, Vereinigte Staaten4435916. It might have been a bad day for this one waiter, but I never thought that an ounce of negativity could even coexist in the midst of all these sweet treats. For the full story you'll have to read my review on Qype.com under the name of Esther80.
The situation was a misunderstanding for sure--normally, the Holländische Kakaostube is a place staffed with extremely pleasant old fashioned outfitted ladies flitting about, taking orders for stellar cakes and hot chocolate with more than pleasant aplomb--but the immediate condescending attitude our waiter displayed on this particular day was not. I have never experienced such rude service in my entire life and must admit, was a little taken aback. The Kakaostube is either overworking their staff, this guy badly needs a course in customer service, or he is prejudiced against Americans. Either way, with all the less than 3 star reviews on Qype all having to do with bad service, one can't help but wonder if the Kakaostube has been letting this guy get away with treating their customers in this fashion for years.
We filed our first EVER complaint at the front. I would have given this place 4 stars for their, nonetheless, amazing confections--some must try's are their hot chocolates with Dutch pressed cocoa with a shot of liqueur and their petite fours--if it weren't for this experience; my husband and I are now hesitant to go back because of it. Never has a charming place, one that I even used to consider a gem of Hannover, fallen so far from grace in my list of favorite haunts. As we left the establishment that day, the manager ran after us with a mollifying gift of two chocolate truffles. A nice gesture to say the least, but the chocolates themselves tasted like disenchantment and compromise.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 016. Juli 2012Vorheriger BeitragIt

In German I said: I would like to order
the American breakfast (American breakrfastusually a pot of coffee
with toast, jams, and scrambled eggs with ham) but can I substitute a
hot chocolate Hawaii (A cup of hot chocolate with a shot of Cointreau)
for the pot of coffee? I have ordered this exact combination twice
already, once last year and once this year with two different waitresses
each time problem-free. One waitress subbed the chocolate for the
coffee pot, the other waitress simply charged me my hot chocolate on top
of the American breakfast which I also didn't mind.
In an abruptly chiding tone, this waiter said: No, you can't do that. What, no nice suggestion for an alternative?
"I've ordered this twice before, " I explained.
No, that is not possible. We don't ever do that.
My husband,
who is a native Hannoverian and who was going to order the same thing as
me but with a hot chocolate mixed with rum asked politely: So you
can't just take the pot of coffee outbecause we don't want any
coffeeand just substitute the hot chocolate? We are willing to pay the
extra for the shot of alcohol.
With barely hidden contempt the waiter replies, We have never done
that in ALL the years that I've worked here. Has this waiter gotten
the same request more than once from a rude customer in the past? Why is
he so angry?
Disappointed but persistent to enjoy my favorite breakfast at the
Kakaostube, I answer Alright, then I will have the American breakfast
but would also like to order the hot chocolate Hawaii as well, meaning
of course that I will take the breakfast with the pot of coffee and also
take the hot chocolate separately as well, but our waiter was already
extremely irritated. Why? I don't know. No! You can't do that! You can order any of the hot chocolates but not with the shot of alcohol.
At this
point my husband and I thought maybe it was an issue with our looking
too young to purchase alcohol or maybe he had something about people
consuming alcohol too early in the day since it was only 11:30am so my
husband said, So we can't order the hot chocolate at all?
No!
The waiter whips out the menu in an exaggerated fashion
and aggressively pointed to all the hot chocolates on the list of hot
chocolates with alcohol and said, You can order any of these, but
without the alcohol. The list of hot chocolates is the same down the
line, only each one has a different kind of liqueur so he basically just
said in a round-about insolent manner that we can order just hot
chocolate.
We were insulted at this point and also still confused because why
would he not let us purchase the hot chocolate separately? We then said
we needed another moment but really, we were ready to go. I have never
experienced such rude service in my entire life and must admit, was a
little taken aback. Our waiter stormed brusquely off and we gathered our
things and went to the front to file our first EVER complaint at an
establishment. The initial aggression with which the waiter reacted to
our inquiry, because it was so uncalled for, suggests either the
Kakaostube is overworking their staff, this guy badly needs a course in
customer service, or he is prejudiced against Americans. Either way,

told him what happened,
Yes, it is our policy that you cannot substitute any hot chocolates
with alcohol for the beverages that come with the breakfasts, but
softened when we said we would have just paid the extra for the hot
chocolate on top of the breakfast cost if the waiter had just come out
and said, Unfortunately that
costs extra. That's all he needed to say, and a dose of courtesy in
his demeanor wouldn't have hurt either.

I was here for breakfast.
The cappuccino is a good choice however I would avoid ordering the "cup of coffee".
The breakfast I had was very nice and not too much. (Holländisches Frühstück)
The bread was fresh and the selection of cold cuts was also good.
The waiters were attentive and friendly.
Nothing to complain about here.
The Café itself is very roomy but the tables are too closely placed for my liking.
It will also get very loud when a larger group arrives and the tall ceiling doesn't aid in reducing the echo.
Overall a pleasant place to be.
I would definitely come here again.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Hazel K.Nagoya, Japan0131023. Okt. 2017
It's good when it comes to ambiance and the presentation of the food but don't expect too much! Im a little skeptical with the taste! And watch out with the prices.. it goes a little bloody! Overall its worth to try! So enjoy and keep trying experiencing something new, I guess!

Auf jeden Fall Holländische Kakao-Stube: haben Sie mal was vom Wort SERVICE mal was gehört?
Bitte Sehr!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (kingla…)Hannover, Niedersachsen42414. März 2012
