This small, but animal packed zoo provided a great few hours even in the heat. It was about 87 degrees on a Monday, but there were plenty of trees and shade to stay as comfortable as possible. The zoo is right in the center of the city. In places where you could see the walls- highrises surrounded the beautiful grounds.
We HIGHLY advise buying tickets online in advance. The website is in German & tricky to navigate- you'll figure it out. Trust us that waiting in a huge line- in the heat- is not ideal. Also, print your tickets in advance. As it was a Monday, classes of schoolchildren surrounded the entrance.
The gorilla & orangutan exhibit is great. There were youngersters in both enclosures but one very small & adorable gorilla is endless entertaining to watch. We did find the petting zoo very unusual. There seemed to be no one from the zoo watching. There was no limit to how many could enter at one time, many of the goats were visibly pregnant but didn't seemed bothered by the attention. In fact, one animal, upset my husband stopped petting her, started to follow him & made a 'sir, I'm not done with the pets' noise. The door to the petting zoo was clearly not always shut and a cattle rack was on the floor as to discourage animals from crossing. The kids & adults we observed seemed to be fairly well behaved- but I'm sure that is not always the case.
This zoo is small, but cute. If we ever come back to the city we would certainly visit again. We would also go to the neighboring natural history museum which we didn't have time to see this time.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mitzi B.Grand Rapids, Vereinigte Staaten7911127. Juli 2023
This is a small zoo. It had a few interesting animals but many of the animals' homes were vacant. I was hoping to purchase a shirt or cap from the gift shop but they did not sell either.

This is definitely one of the better zoos that I have been to. It is sprawled in between beautiful greenery in Frankfurt. I walked from my hostel near the main train station which took about 30 minutes. I really enjoyed the walk and went I arrived at the zoo I was amazed. I do not have any kids as this was an outing simply to have something to do while I counted down till my flight. The zoo is large and they have plenty to see. If you are in the area and have time, come by and check it out.

There is a small coffee kiosk inside, you can get some waffles in there as well. Don't throw away your given Zoo Map cuz it's really useful and you can miss out on some places without it. Go on the feeding hours, to see the animals getting fed, check online for specifics. Tip: don't wear heels

The tickets are not that expensive and very reasonable, if I remember right it was around 20 Euros for adults. The parking garage (hourly rate) about 5-7 min walk from the zee entrance.
I spent around 3 hours with my wife and we believe we saw like 80% of it maybe.
We really recommend to start with checking the timing for feeding the lions and tigers as they are very cool and you don't want to miss it.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 20. Aug. 2012
This is an awesome zoo. There's almost too much to discuss, so here are eight highlights, just for you:
1. The fascinating and graphic video of a giraffe giving birth. This only reinforced my opinion that you ladies are such WHINERS. It's so easy! The giraffe can walk around and basically run errands while giving birth, sometimes stopping to just chill with the newborn half-in and half-out. Also, who needs doctors? Why can't you people also just stick your neck down there and pull the baby out? (This is going to get me slapped.)
2. The monkeys. Everyone knows that German monkeys are much better than all other monkeys. In this case, I watched a little guy smash his apples against the cage bars just so he could lick the juice as it dripped. It was the best thing that happened to me all year. (My life is sad.)
3. The Double-wattled Cassowary. (I mean, c'mon. It's got two wattles.)
4. The otters. (Otters are just really cute.)
5. The currywurst at the food stand. (Actually dope.)
6. Watching baby chicks hatch. (Much cuter than the giraffe birth.)
7. The ant farm that spans the entire bug hut thing. (Bugs are fascinating as long as there is glass separating you.)
8. Right outside, there's a place called Peter's Biergarten. But it's closed. I guess that's not a highlight, but it's outside the zoo anyway. (Leave me alone.)Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 10Oh no 0 - Ally A.Boston, Vereinigte Staaten2852309216. Feb. 2017
One of the smaller zoos that I have been to, but lovely for a city this size, with a good variety. The animals are varied and well cared for, and feeding times for animals are fun, and unexpected fun (today I got to see stingrays eat, something I never expected and was super fascinated by).
Conveniently placed near transit and parking, as well as good food options outside the zoo.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - T. C.Round Rock, Vereinigte Staaten35551025. Juni 2015
Very good zoo for the money. For one adult and two children it was only 20,00 Euro. There is an U-Bahn stop right out in front. We spent about 4 hours there and still did not make it to the section with all the birds. The animals seem very well taken care of. I would have liked to have seen a larger area for a couple of the animals but overall, I was very impressed. There a re a few place to stop and grab a bite to eat but dont go looking for a full menu. Overall it was a great day at a good zoo.
Here is our video from our trip to the zoo.

Tourists be aware, they don't accept any credit cards at all. Make sure you have enough cash with you. Digitalization, Blockchain and all that fun stuff might happen everywhere else in the world but definitely not in the Frankfurt Zoo. Yes, they call Frankfurt "Mainhattan" due to the few skyscrapers they have over here... but that's pretty much it already. The zoo is quite nice though, especially worth with kids since they also have a little outside playground area.

No Elephants!!
They were moved out to the Opel zoo in the Taunus hills after and unfortunate accident many years ago. Otherwise you can see the Grzimek (famous naturalist and TV personality) House, where night is made into day, big cats, apes, the list goes on :)
Tours, film shows and talks are on offer as is a well made web presence (German and English).
You can spend an enjoyable half a day or longer there, take a picnic and comfy shoes and if you want to take photographs you should buy a ticket for that too!
A grand day out.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
